OVERVIEW

Easy-to-set-up, lightweight, professional PA system.

The Bose L1 Compact system combines conventional PA and monitors into one sleek unit. Positioned behind or to the side of a performer, DJ or presenter, it delivers wide, even sound coverage throughout the stage area and audience, even off to the extreme sides. It's Bose's smallest, lightest, easiest-to-set-up L1 system, weighing just 29 pounds.

The L1 Compact system's slim loudspeaker distributes sound clearly and evenly throughout the room, thanks to Bose Spatial Dispersion technology. The speaker's unusual vertical shape makes it distinctly different from conventional PA speakers•and has a very positive effect on sound coverage. Even audience and band members off to the extreme sides hear the same clear, tonally balanced sound as those in front.

The L1 Compact loudspeaker array is smaller than those in L1 Model I and II systems, but it produces comparable horizontal sound coverage. L1 Model I and Model II loudspeakers project sound further with less dropoff of volume than the L1 Compact array.

With the L1 Compact system, you don't have to carry a separate amplifier, mixer or bass cabinet: They're already built in. The system's power stand includes an integrated bass speaker and amplifier, plus a built-in mixer providing a total of four inputs and two outputs.

Channel 1 is a microphone input with a customized ToneMatch preset for a handheld dynamic microphone. The preset automatically optimizes a handheld microphone's tone when used with the L1 Compact system. Channel 2 accepts up to three inputs at once, including a guitar, keyboard or other instrument, DJ mixer, MP3 player, laptop or projector. It features a customized ToneMatch preset to optimize the sound of an acoustic guitar.

My band mate and I purchased two of these. The reviews on this are pretty accurate. This unit has a nice, stereo like, sound and delivers plenty of volume. I wish it had reverb. I replaced a Fishman Solo Amp with this and really regret not keeping both. The Fishman sounds great with an acoustic guitar and vocals which can be colored with Eq and reverb.
Another feature for the Bose, that May not be apparent is that it records out of the rear RCA jacks perfectly. This Bose has wonderful pre amps and the volume is dead on without having to fiddle with it. We recorded a live show from the RCA outs on the back, into a ZOOM R-16, and had a nice recording that was pretty much what we heard coming from Front of the Bose. Very clean, full sound was recorded.
I do think this system is a bit over priced. Giving it a simple reverb would make this a a much better piece of equipment at this price. When playing with Another guitarist/singer, we run two of these through a Behringer FX1622usb mixer. When I'm performing on my own I just bring one Bose, a Shure headset mic, Taylor 12 string and my iPad for drums and it sounds pretty good. Fills a medium room with sound. I've never had it higher then you see on the photo here.
The Bose boasts about the spatial sound. It's not as spatial as they would like you to think. The sound does travel out and it maintains the volume but you do have to be standing in front, off to the side. I've tried behind me and have feed back unless I'm standing off to the side, even though the feedback is considerably less than anything else I've used, you still can't stand in front of it like the add claims. If you stand to the side of it you won't hear it as well, inspite of what the ads claim, you don't hear the same sound 180 degrees around it. IT has to be pointed towards you from either side, back, or front. We usually have them a bit to the side pointed 1/2 way between myself and the audience. We like to hear ourselves a bit louder then the audience usually does and this arrangement allows that. They are very lightweight, easy to setup and sound like a high fidelity stereo with lots of kick. They don't sound like a typical PA system. These are much cleaner, not as muddy.

I have done around 250 shows with this from small quiet venues to medium sized loud bars and a couple larger rooms. Performs well in quiet situations but when I try to drive it at halfway or better, I get feedback issues regardless of placement, EQ or signal strength going to the unit.
Very nice sound with a good mixer in quiet settings. A joy to lug around. Very Durable. I tipped it from 20 inches to tile floor on 2 occasions, once sent it end over-end and no damage. I play one room which is very quiet with high wood arching ceiling and the sound is great with no mixer.
The main issue I have is that the claims of little or no feedback do not hold up at all in my experience. I also find it pricey considering no reverb, limited EQ and the inaccurate claims regarding feedback. Generally, you need a mixer with this unit. Once again, I have never had it set to half or more without feedback.
Should have gotten the Fish-stick. I have friends who use them and they sound almost as good as well and provide nearly the coverage and has the EQ and reverb. The bose is not a good choice for medium to large loud bar-rooms. Still I will keep it as it so nice sounding as long as I use it within it's many limitations.

Comments about Bose L1 Compact System:

The Bose L1 Compact is a great system in theory. The line array covers a large area and it's an easy set up. That's about the only positive things I have to say about it. Bose claims that there is no feedback which is a total lie. I can't place this system behind me (where it should go) because it feedbacks like a cat in heat. I have to place it to the side which in itself is a problem because drunk people seem to think it is a pole and this tower is flimsy and I'm afraid it will break. Speaking of breaking, I was playing my i phone through the XLR channel and it blew out. I was told that if the iPhone has the volume too high this could happen. That is just shotty craftsmanship in my opinion. A system that cost a grand shouldn't break that easily. I upgraded form a Samson Expedition 308 i and I regret doing so. The Samson was more sturdy and sounded just as good as The Bose for half the price. Fortunately Fender has come out with an array system for a lot lless than this overpriced piece of plastic.

Comments about Bose L1 Compact System:

The sound is true. When set up you hear what the audience hears. As a single musician simplcity is greatly appreciated. If I choose to I can develop a more complex sound with the Tone Match one day...but my songs have alway been about the lyrics and honesty which comes across well with the L1 Compact. I replace a very nice PA with monitors and many sound options...and it still feel short of my L!....THANK YOU BOSE...always keep it simple and true.

Comments about Bose L1 Compact System:

This unit is truly the best thing that ever happened for a solo performer. It really does carry in and set up in a few minutes. The sound is clear & crisp with plenty of power for most any club or indoor venue. Audience members both technically savvy and otherwise constantly comment about how great the sound reproduction.
I had some concern about the lack of reverb on the vocal channel, but I solved that with a TC Helicon Mic Mechanic. Select the "club" reverb and dial the effects knob to about 10:30 and then I don't need to touch it for the entire gig (I leave "tone" switched off becasue the BOSE has it's own EQ function. I also leave pitch correction off since I don't need it. I use a SHURE Beta 58A for the vocal mic.
