Not as advertised

By Jestermusic

from California

BUYER BEWARE: This product does not support MIDI as advertised. It also does not support the majority of VST as advertised. Lastly, the latency is absolutely terrible with a MIDI device. If you only want to record audio, which is all this thing does, get Audacity for free. If you want a total package audio system get Cubase.

Best software for it price!

By Paul,Les Paul

from Canada

Title says it all,If your just starting recording or you have a low budget and are playing in your basement, this is the software you need. Im 14 and have been playing music all my life and this software has helped me start my career. I have had comments such as "which studio did you go to" and people cant believe how cheap it is. Editing is fairly easy and sharing online is too. I recommend that you have a good USB mic and a good space/studio with acoustical treatment in it.Thats all you need folks!

Sonar Home Studio 7 - Love it

By Roscoe-orJbg

from Indiana

I own and have used Pro Tools for years, so I was looking for something that was close to the features it offered but not a system hog like Pro Tools.Ease of Use - For someone just getting started, there will be a learning curve - but that comes with any software. The learning curve is not as sharp as Logic, though. I loaded it, connected my external sound card, plugged in the mics and instruments and got right to work within 2 hours.Quality of Sound - It does a great job of capturing the raw sound. I am still experimenting with internal effects and mixing the sounds, but I get more impressed with each usage.Editing - this is the happy, unhappy part. Editing should be simple. Fundamentally, it should be like MS Word. cut, copy, paste. However, there are some qwirky things that happen when editing. If I shade and delete a section, it pastes it on the end of the track for whatever reason. Essentially, I have to delete twice. Just a hassle. Pro Tools is much easier here. you just shade and delete. The plus is that it does a great job of lining up correctly. Easy to move and line up tracks up to the m/s.Effects - Still going through these, but they are really nice. Far from quality of Waves, but still good.Mixdown to mp3 - I hate the fact that it does not include an mp3 encoder. Audacity comes with Lame mp3 encoder and it doesnt really work well with Sonar. However, its only $19.99 to get the encoder which still brings me out on top, so I cant complain.Price - I bought it just at the right time. Sonar Home Studio 8 was just coming out and they had a 50% off special. $50 for this is great!!I highly recommend for someone just getting started in computer recording or the frugal artist looking to record their sound without compromising quality.

Great for Home Recording

By plowhand247

from South Carolina

I am downloaded my Sonar 7 and it's great. I had a little trouble with the set up, but I used the manual and worked it out. Didn't need to call tech support. I have been using Sony Acid Studio, but this Sonar 7 blows it away. The final recording quality difference is huge. If you're thinking of recording your material at home, this is the program you need.

Excellent program

By texasfrank

from Austin, TX

I'm using version 6 for two years and it works fine on both XP and Vista. It is an extremely stable program that is totally loaded with features and a completely customizable interface. Don't be fooled by the "Home Studio" title as this program offers a lot. It comes with some good plugins including a basic arp that lets you play live (or from midi) and arpeggiate any softsynth sound. I think it is by far the best value for the money. I also have Sony Acid and I much prefer Cakewalk. It can also be used with any ACID loops if you're into that. The customer support is very good. I had an install issue and they walked me through it on the phone and have never had a problem for two years. The only reasons I didn't give this excellent program a perfect five were that the program icons are small and don't have text labels unless you mouse over them; the menus assume a pretty high level of knowledge; and it doesn't come with a free mp3 encoder. You can save wave files or burn cds or use another program like Itunes to make mp3 files from the wav or you can download the free LAME MP3 encoder and configure it with instructions found on the cakewalk forum. Oh, the cakewalk forums are great too and people will answer your questions and give advice which is a real plus for a beginner. Highly recommended!
