After not recording since being in studios in the late 80s early90s,I was looking forward to finding out about digital audio.Sonar X1 ,like any deep software can take a while to learn, but once you have, you'll be VERY gratified. The included effects plugins/instruments,and 64bit,make it far and away better than possibly ALL the others.X1c Expanded[September 2011] $$ upgrade, with "synth replace" and the expansion of the Pro Channel-channel strip, make this DAW pretty hard to beat.Sure it took a while to learn[Also my first computer experience],but with just Reg.code Authorisation[No dongle or Software Licence user hassle] it really makes everything easy, plus the cakewalk forum is very helpful.Definitely worth the price[Especially compared to P.T.!]

Sonar will always be my DAW of choice

Like many other musicians/producers I have used many DAWs, and I always find myself at home when working with Sonar. I run it on a HP Envy15, win7 4gb ram (another 2gb dedicated on graphics card) and a dual core i5 (2.97ghz). I would recomend at LEAST thoes specs when using Sonar, I find it runs flawlessly but once I get up to 40+ tracks I need to start condensing them.

I've worked with pro tools a lot in a good friends studio, he works with macs and I prefer windows. I gave pro tools another shot but this time on windows, still I found Sonar 8 to be supeiror. When 8.5 came out I was estatic, and I just recently got X1. The new versions are not just bells and whisles, I highly recomend upgrading if your budget allows. Sonar 8.5 is a wonderful DAW, but x1 just adds so much more flexability. If you're not used to recording on Sonar it might take some getting used to, I learned on it and find it to be significantly different from Cubase and pro tools. One of the most significant differances is the quality in the bundeled plugins, you will find that you don't need to purchase or try many VSTs because of how well the ones that are included work. They are all visually appealing, and the program works great when using more than one monitor.

Chances are I will be faithful to cakewalk for the rest of my music recording days, they make wonderful products. My friend that uses pro tools says that he prefers it because he frequently exchanges tracks with his producer and it is the most commonly used DAW. To each his own I suppose, I find Sonar to have more than everything I need, & it being windows exclusive makes me glad I chose a win7 machine for production.

cheers!

Sonar X1 is going to be a great addition to anyone looking for flexibility in a DAW. Sonar has so many tools to choose from. The Pro channel gives you a warm clean feel when mixing. The compressor is decent and eq is very clean. Get a decent sound card first before you install X1!! You?re going to need a good computer also with a multi-core processor running 32bit or 64bit windows operating system. Sorry no Mac users yet. Running very good on windows7, just make sure you get the updates packages from Sonar. They fixed a lot of bug issues. There is a little learning curve for starters but if you?re familiar with Sonar products it should not be that bad. Lots of extras come included so make sure you have enough disk space on your hard-drive.

These reviews are subjective and hard to guage, but I'll give it a go and see if I can convince you.  It's been 14 months trying to assemble a DA repitoire in my home studio.  And it's been hard due to the technical mess in general that home studio enthusiasts have to navigate through. I went through 5 interfaces and a half dozen software packages...spent over 10k.  It was hugely disappointing with just a few good moments.  I got so burned out, I stoped in Feb and then in early april decided to order Sonar X1.  I cannot tell you how diametrically opposite my experience with X1 compared to PT9.  Pro Tools was unforgiving, non-intuitive, extremely buggie, would not play nice with any of my mainstream interfaces even my brand new Focusrite Liquid Saffire 56.  It was very difficult getting it configured with other RTAS software.  I could go on about how bad my experience was with Pro Tools...I hate it...I'll never touch it again.  X1 was really a surprise...no dongle...it installed uneventfully...no issue.  I have the fastest CPU Intel makes with the absolute latest Sata III drives 24GB RAM...bla bla bla and ProTools took at least a minute to open due to all of the plug-in.....X1...opens right up...without error and to a pristine, refined interface with high res dials and extreme attention to detail.  The same Komplete 7 100GB of plugins available.  PT9 doesn't even come close.  I'm very disappointed in AVID for putting this product out because as you know...you can't get your money back...which is totally unfair.  I hear Cubase 6 is really refined also, so I don't want to sound like I'm a Cakewalk employee....no...but I do want to make the point that I love the clean job they did developing this software.  Just beautiful!

at first, it took a little time to configure the settings but sooo many sounds to choose from. the only thing is to make sure you have the Juice or at keast the minimum requirements for you PC. 2nd, if you are on a budget and is trying to purchase items piece by piece for exampl I don't have my Audio interface yet adjust your  setting to MME otherwise the sound will distort. I am using Klipsch PC Speakers 2.0 and it is Am amazing. Oh yeah get the updates ASAP to avoid any glictes that you see on other comments but this is awesome Software. I used Cubase Prologic and this is the Money maker
