First off, Let me say that I have VERY LITTLE experience with stage lighting or working with a DMX. My first impressions of this light were really good. The brightness is very good, as is the color mixing. After going through the manual and reading all of the dip switch info, it STILL confuses me. I actually got it to a setting that I wanted by accident, so it's doing what I want it to (slow dimming color changes for truss warmer). The metal aluminum casing is VERY THIN (Again, maybe they're all like this, but this is my first can..) It rolled off of my couch, and on to plush carpet (about a 2' drop) and DENTED pretty badly. Overall, I really like how it performs, and how it looks. I have not had it long enough to vouch for durability. If you were touring with this, I'd definitley protect them in a case
We use ours for our mobile DJ system, and, despite it's size, it does a very good job of lighting up the dance areas. Set to sound active, it puts on one heck of a light show, and it plays well with our other DMX lights set up. The dip-switch settings can seem intimidating for first-time users, but the owner's manual is very clear if you just take time to read. We bought this unit with the mindset of having LED lights that, hopefully, won't ever need replaced and so far, despite a few bumps and bruises during it's travels, it's holding up very well. The dual mounting brackets were ingenious; we can either hang it or simply set it on top of the speaker for use. Gripes are few; the sound-active setting can get a little "busy", and I'd have liked to have seen this in a flat-black case, but those are very minor compared to the use we plan on giving this light. We plan on purchasing a few more of these over time, LED's are the way to go these days.
These lights are great simply because they're LED, and they're pretty good value. My rig has ten of them, and they light up a medium to large stage very easily. I haven't compared them to any of the other LED 38s in this price range, but I will say that this product WAS CLEARLY NOT DESIGNED FOR TOURING OR MOBILE RIGS. It's literally a hundred bucks worth of electronics inside a pop can, and will quickly amass dents no matter how careful you are with them. You should also know that of my initial purchase of ten of these, three were defective out of the box, and when I went back to get replacements, the first one I grabbed off the shelf was also defective out of the box. A couple more fell apart for no reason and needed to be re-riveted, and after one three-week tour, another is malfunctioning. I recommend very light duty use of this product.
