Comments about CHAUVET DJ SlimPar 38 DMX3MF 8 Light System:

Although this is my first brush with DMX, as a keyboardist I'm fairly well versed in electronics and MIDI which uses similar conventions. I unpacked and hooked all 8 SlimPAR's serially to the controller and verified they were all set to 3CH and sub ch 001. When sending commands from the controller only 1 can (#5) performed as expected. The other cans were doing a stuttering thing during transitions or were just hanging on one color. I disconnected the controller and did the standalone master/slave program, using can #1 as master, and they all worked perfectly.
I then disconnected all the DMX cables and ran them thru my cable tester. They all passed the continuity and "wiggle test".
Started reconnecting one at a time to the controller starting with can #1. It worked. Then added #2. It worked. All the way to #7 operated smoothly. When I hooked up #8 the original problem came back. Unhooked #8 and lights 1 thru 7 started working properly again. I started bypassing random lights, and it seams that any 7 lights and the system will work. The 8th light makes the system erratic.
The next day I called MF and talked to Marvin, and explained to him the confusing manner in which the system was behaving and the initial trouble shooting I've already done. I also told him that when I checked the internet for people having similar problems I learned that the absence of a DMX termination plug causes lots of grief in DMX systems. He (and his super) agreed so a termination plug was put in the mail no charge. Very grateful for that. In the meantime I used the system last Saturday night with the 8th light unhooked as a stand alone light, so when I dimmed the system that one stayed on.
Received the plug today so I hooked up the 8th SlimPAR, plugged the terminator into the DMX out connector, held my breath and and crossed my fingers, , , , The whole system operated as designed!!! NO PROBLEMS!!
I gave it 4 stars because a termination plug should be included with the system.

Works well enough but misleading. Read my review first!

Comments about CHAUVET DJ SlimPar 38 DMX3MF 8 Light System:

First thing after receiving all of the packages I unpacked all of the pieces and laid them out to make it as simple and easy as possible.. but it proved to be more difficult than I thought.

I'm not experienced with lights so that could be my problem, but I am a pretty logical guy and can figure most things out on my own eventually, especially if I have a somewhat decent manual.

This came with no manual for the stands or how to actually hookup the lights to the trees. There was a quick reference guide for the lights and for the DMX board, but those we're not very in-depth by any means. As far as initially hooking it up, I still have yet to figure it out. I looked it up online, looked for videos, pictures, how-to's, etc. but couldn't find anything. I figured out how to hook it up eventually, but the method I used didn't use half of the supplies the package came with. I requested the help of other fellow musicians and none of us could figure it out, so we just went with what I figured out.

The 2nd problem I had was that one of the lights wouldn't turn on right out of the package. I talked to Musician's Friend customer service the next day and they shipped me a new one right away. Great customer service reverses that negative in my books.

The next, and biggest, problem I had was getting the lights hooked up to the DMX board. The lights simply went nuts, doing whatever it was they wanted. Even after reading the quick-reference guide and programming the lights appropriately, it still didn't work. In the end I found out that the DMX board that comes with this package is only compatible with 4 lights at once - if you hook up more than 4 lights to the board it will simply not work. This is misleading because the package comes with 8 DMX cables, implying that all 8 lights should be able to hook up to the board.

The biggest problem I had was this was that it took me so long to figure it out because this came with no in-depth manuals or how-to's or anything. After I realized how to get it working (which took me from 7pm-4am, work SUCKED the next day) I am satisfied with the product. Having all 8 hooked up to the board is a little overkill in my opinion anyway, so the fact that the lights can all be individually programmed without being hooked up to a DMX board is a big positive.

Good product, but a little misleading.
