Was very surprised at how much control I had in this price range. More scenes then I'll ever need but good to have anyway. After I spent some quality time programming and saving scenes and chases it was well worth the effort. The owners manual not so good! The age of Google searches and U-tube video's saved me tons of anguish. The best help is on-line! This unit is a little tricky to set up and by itself it is not laid out very well. Out of the box I had a very tough time getting anything to work properly. Extremely important is setting up the channels first in your lights to match the controller. I spent several days (no kidding!) setting up scenes to memory (30 banks of 8)On a very positive note once you have the scenes and chases the way you want them and store them to memory the rest is easy. I actually found myself spending more time then needed to create the perfect scenes for all the different songs we play. It was time consuming but at the same time worth the effort after we used this at a job. Made the band look so professional. I have fun with this unit at band jobs and I play bass in the band. The switches seem to be very touchy sometimes not working on the first try. Even though they have a positive click to them sometimes you have to hit a switch twice for the command to take. Only used on two band jobs so far so will see how well it holds up. I did buy the extended warranty (2 years) I highly recommend that!

The first unit I got didn't work properly -- lights went on and off more or less randomly. The 2nd one seems to be better, but the power adapter didn't work. I'm slowly making progress on learning how to use it. Having difficulties getting the unit to respond to note commands in a midi file. It's inexpensive, and a big improvement over what I had before (nothing), but it would work best if I had someone to operate it manually during a show. If anyone reading this has had success with midi control, drop me a line. I might recommend this unit, but with reservations.

Comments about Chauvet Obey 40 DMX Lighting Controller:

If you are new, once you call someone at technical support to get you started it is easy enough to operate. I searched many forums but most answers were given by guys whose technical DMX knowledge is way over my head , so their technical jargon was difficult for me to follow. I don't think you need a deep background of DMX language once you get going.
The trick is finding which controls for each fixture do which effect for that fixture. With Chauvet's technical support I figured this out in 5 minutes and had no trouble from there forward. The limits of this unit are light customization. Each of the lights come with their own chase sequences built in and the controller has the ability to make 6 of your own. I use the controller and lights for a cover band. The issue with the controller is that 6 chases run out pretty quickly, so short of accepting the chases built into the lights, which are 50% decent and 50% lame, your options are limited with this controller.
It is easy to use on the fly with programs of banks and scenes pre-programmed before the performance. I taught a guy to use all the banks, scenes, and chases I pre-programmed for our 42 song gig in about 1 hour.
Worst con for me is no dimming ability across the board, so lights are either on or off.
All in all, it does a good job. Probably would work best for a DJ. I'd guve it an 80 for a band.

Comments about Chauvet Obey 40 DMX Lighting Controller:

I have used Chauvette controllers for all my dmx lighting except for movers. Once you have learned how everything works (I recommend going to you tube) it works well. The only thing is that is does not have no onboard memory. once the power is cut from the unit, your complete programming is lost. I recommend leaving the power on even all night. I have bought a road case for it and just close case and modify so you just plug in the power from the outside of the case. (twistlock would be the best) This will make the unit more weather freindly.

Comments about Chauvet Obey 40 DMX Lighting Controller:

This is my first DMX experience so I have little to compare it to.
THe only reason I did not give this 5 stars is that like others mention, the slides feel cheap or flimsy and it feels like they will break fairly easily.
Same for buttons, although not as bad, they are a bit 'wobbly' but all controls DO work so only time will tell.

I was able to get up and running in an hour with a basic chase using 4bar tri light bars in 15ch mode (controlling each light individually).
It was fairly easy with the help of a couple youtube videos, manual is pretty useless but then that's the norm it seems.

            Overall satisfied with this item.

Comments about Chauvet Obey 40 DMX Lighting Controller:

I picked up 2 Light Bar 64s also from Chauvet and all I can say is "WOW". Being able to turn on or off each of the 8 lights and set what amounts to an infinity of colors is incredible. For a creative person this thing is super, it is so nice to be able to create 240 static scenes to set the mood for the music. A must have plain and simple. If you're a band or DJ and want to really make a statement and put on spectacular shows save your pennies and bump these to the top of the wishlist.

Comments about Chauvet Obey 40 DMX Lighting Controller:

For the money, IMO this is the best light controller. I'm controlling about 20 fixtures and still have capacity. Granted, some of the fixtures are in master/slave mode, but with multiples of the same fixtures, that's probably the best way to go anyway with today's fixtures. I used the first unit for about 2.5 years before it died, and I replaced it with another without a second thought.
With no DMX programming knowledge, it will take a while to get up to speed. But with a basic knowledge, it's a cinch.

Comments about Chauvet Obey 40 DMX Lighting Controller:

Programmed my first DMX light show with this thing and it worked well. I had a lot of trouble getting started but a lot of that came from my unfamiliarity with DMX. But once everything was hooked up correctly it worked like a charm. I brought it on its first 2 week tour and sent MIDI to it via my laptop and out to 4 separate fixtures and had zero problems on tour.

My only complaint is that the faders and buttons are really weak and could easily break off if used too hard. However, as long as you're not doing any real-time changes to the faders during a performance I don't see how that would be a problem. I've got it screwed into my rack along with my bass head to keep all the cables from coming unplugged and have had no issues with it. Great controller for a first-time user for sure.
