Comments about Chauvet SlimPar 38 DMX3MF 8 Light System:
First thing after receiving all of the packages I unpacked all of the pieces and laid them out to make it as simple and easy as possible.. but it proved to be more difficult than I thought.
I'm not experienced with lights so that could be my problem, but I am a pretty logical guy and can figure most things out on my own eventually, especially if I have a somewhat decent manual.
This came with no manual for the stands or how to actually hookup the lights to the trees. There was a quick reference guide for the lights and for the DMX board, but those we're not very in-depth by any means. As far as initially hooking it up, I still have yet to figure it out. I looked it up online, looked for videos, pictures, how-to's, etc. but couldn't find anything. I figured out how to hook it up eventually, but the method I used didn't use half of the supplies the package came with. I requested the help of other fellow musicians and none of us could figure it out, so we just went with what I figured out.
The 2nd problem I had was that one of the lights wouldn't turn on right out of the package. I talked to Musician's Friend customer service the next day and they shipped me a new one right away. Great customer service reverses that negative in my books.
The next, and biggest, problem I had was getting the lights hooked up to the DMX board. The lights simply went nuts, doing whatever it was they wanted. Even after reading the quick-reference guide and programming the lights appropriately, it still didn't work. In the end I found out that the DMX board that comes with this package is only compatible with 4 lights at once - if you hook up more than 4 lights to the board it will simply not work. This is misleading because the package comes with 8 DMX cables, implying that all 8 lights should be able to hook up to the board.
The biggest problem I had was this was that it took me so long to figure it out because this came with no in-depth manuals or how-to's or anything. After I realized how to get it working (which took me from 7pm-4am, work SUCKED the next day) I am satisfied with the product. Having all 8 hooked up to the board is a little overkill in my opinion anyway, so the fact that the lights can all be individually programmed without being hooked up to a DMX board is a big positive.
Good product, but a little misleading.
