Comments about Chauvet Stage Designer 50 DMX Lighting Controller:
We bought this for a small community theater. We looked around, and this was really the *only* option in this price range. It's good bang for the buck and it works very well for our purposes. You can run it in direct 24 channel mode, 12 channel A/B mode, or programmed ("mix/chase") mode.
In either of the direct modes, it's very simple and obvious to operate. The individual sliders control the lights and there are 1 (24 chan.) or 2 (12 chan. A/B) master faders.
In programmed mode, you can program "scenes" that are either static sets of light levels or can have up to 1000 separate steps each. The steps in each scene can play out in a timed sequence, synchronized to music, or stepped through manually. Scenes are loaded 12 at a time and are controlled by the bottom 12 sliders. There are eight sets of scenes, somewhat awkwardly arranged in two groups of 4 pages, for a total of 96 scenes. With 1000 steps per scene, that's a maximum of 96000 individual states, which should be more than enough for most applications.
While scenes are playing, you can still directly control the first 12 lights through the top 12 sliders (the whole thing *really* works better with 12 lights than 24).
Programming isn't hard, but it's not always intuitive, and the manual is truly awful. Here's an actual quote: "A Scene can contain up to 1,000 steps. The term [sic] steps and scenes are used interchangeably in this manual." That gives you some idea what you're up against. Take your problems to the forums.
Still, overall, we're quite happy with it and would definitely recommend it.
Comments about Chauvet Stage Designer 50 DMX Lighting Controller:
I bought this board for my church to control several par cans a few LED wash lights. The Stage Designer 50 is feature packed, especially for the price. The features are enough to seduce you where the sticky sliders don't bother you too much. I can see how they made this controller so affordable, and it is because of cheap construction. Overall, it works and has the features I need - so I am happy.
Comments about Chauvet Stage Designer 50 DMX Lighting Controller:
The manual is written for someone who laready knows what they are doing. I spent 3 hours not getting anything to work until I realized that my polarity switch was in the wrong position. The manual identified that it was a polarity switch but then gave no directions on what it does or what position it should be in.
I put together a 10 minute video to help the next person who gets this product. I hope someone finds it useful. On youtube search Chauvet Stage Designer 50 and its (currently) the second video.
It does exactly what I need for a reasonable price. It was the cheapest controller I coul dfind with an audio input to synch with my drums for live rock shows.
Good quality. A couple of faders won't reach 255 or 0. I can live with this and it probably won't be a big deal for a lot of lights, but, for example, my stobe effect tunes in just right at around 230. The way I have it set up, I have have to physically push and hold the bar before pressing record. It's tought because 255 is too much, so I have to play with it a bit.
Comments about Chauvet Stage Designer 50 DMX Lighting Controller:
OK. I am done with Chauvet. I had a dmx operator 50 board that I used to run 5 different lasers and 6 different moving head intelligent lights and it worked fine. Only had 8 channels on 2 pages so I wanted an up grade. The obey 70 was not what it was said to be. So I tried the stage designer 50. Talking to the Chauvet tech help I explained that I need to set the board to work dmx channel 59 he said and I quote"There is no channel 59 in dmx". Say What?! It claims to be 512 controller and assignable channels but the tech said no. This is nuts and the board does not work as advertized. I am writing Chauvet and the better business bureau about this. I've been doing this for over 35 years and what these corporation are putting out today is just ridiculous.
Comments about Chauvet Stage Designer 50 DMX Lighting Controller:
First time caller, long time listener...The Chauvet Stage designer 50 is in my top ten purchases. After and two and a half hours of messing with it, I made the decision to call Chauvet themselves and have them walk me through it. After 15 minutes on the phone, I had this baby doing exactly what I want and needed it to do. Top notch! I love Chauvet products!
Comments about Chauvet Stage Designer 50 DMX Lighting Controller:
It's very nice controller for the starter, other than the manual, it's pretty thin. After a few hours I figured it out. As far as the quality and features, it's a deal. BEWARE VCR programmers!
Comments about Chauvet Stage Designer 50 DMX Lighting Controller:
In a pinch, I needed a very inexpensive controller. This was the choice. After 3 hours of not getting anything to work via DMX control, (The manual stinks) You MUST have the FADE SPEED Fader up in order for the console to work. Otherwise, no other problems.
