OVERVIEW

The XLS is a leader in portable power amps, with DriveCore Technology, PureBand Crossover System, and Peakx limiters.

Crown's XLS 1500 amplifier is a premiere portable PA system with unmatched performance, technology and affordability. It includes multiple inputs so you can plug in anything and play anywhere, along with several system setup configurations. This high-performance Crown power amp provides enormous power and flexibility thanks to the integrated DriveCore Technology, PureBand Crossover System and Peakx limiters. Weighing less than 12 pounds, it's much easier to set up and move from show to show.

A Crown Power Amp with Integrated DriveCore Technology
Class D amplifiers are notable for extraordinarily high efficiency and being well suited for driving difficult reactive loads such as subwoofers. However, their performance can suffer impaired performance on marginal and unstable AC line supplies. To overcome this obstacle, Crown engineers developed DriveCore Technology-a proprietary hybrid analog-digital integrated circuit (IC) developed with Texas Instruments that drives the "front end" of the Class D output stage. Over 60 years of Crown's design knowledge and experience went into the development of this technology resulting in truly remarkable benefits. DriveCore Technology provides an extremely wide tolerance with regards to sagging or "dirty" AC line conditions, providing consistent performance without affecting audio quality. This means the Crown XLS1500 power amp will not compromise your performance by fluctuating generator power, or overload from lighting rigs, backline gear, etc.

In addition, DriveCore Technology's patented feedback and PWM modulation circuits enable fast recovery on peak transients, accurate reproduction of low-level detail, and precise tracking of low-frequencies at high power levels for maximum subwoofer output.

Advanced Switched-Mode Power Supply
The advanced power supply in the Crown power amp is highly efficient and optimized for maximum power transfer from the AC line through the Class D output stage to the loudspeakers. A benefit to this is substantial weight reduction when compared to older 60Hz transformer-based power supplies.

PureBand Crossover System
The PureBand Crossover System in the Crown XLS Series power amplifiers adds an enormous amount of flexibility and performance to any system. With this system, the crossover frequency is completely variable allowing the choice of any crossover point between 50Hz and 3kHz on 1/12 octave centers. The use of 4th order Linkwitz-Riley filters provides steep slopes for a seamless transition between high and low drivers. And with four crossover modes to choose from providing the ultimate in flexibility, all of your system needs are covered.

Peakx limiters
Peakx limiters provide the ultimate in performance and protection for your entire system. This advanced algorithm was specifically developed and tuned to work with this amplifier and power-supply to achieve higher SPL will less audible artifacts. This means less distortion, less shutdowns, and maximum safe power delivered to your speakers. The Peakx limiters can be easily turned on or off by channel right from the front panel eliminating the need to be digging around in the back of the dark rack.

So...can't really beat it on the power to price ratio. I only need to cover a couple hundred people and have no need to "pound the ground" so the size is just right for me. I run it crossed over; one side for mains at 4ohm (525 watts) and the other side drives a single 15" 4 ohm Peavey Black Widow. Not night club thumping but this arrangement gives a very musical, full and balanced sound, which is what I was looking for.

To me the amp has a clean, "modern" (maybe a little digitalish?) sound, if that makes sense.

The only knock I give it is that I wish the features gave you more control and flexibility. I wish I could run it one input sub and one input mid/high for crossover purposes. As it is you use a "Y" configuration so that a single input is crossed over to the two outputs. If you want to use the high or low pass one side then you only have that same option on the other side. Why isn't there high and low pass on both channels and so I can get full control over the frequencies going to each speaker? You will have to rely on other components like your system EQ to address these needs. Also I so wish that in crossover mode I had a variable high pass for the low side and a low pass for the high side. Again, I needed another method to cut the unwanted sub-sonic stuff.

Build is "plasticy" and doesn't have that built like brick, last for ages feel of some of the old school amps. But it is light as a feather if that matters to you.

Love it in general for my purposes and the price was right even if it doesn't do all that it could or at least, imo, should.

I bought this amp to replace an aging "D150A" purchased in 1977, after replacing the old with the new I decided to bridge both amps and run one for each channel. When I invited a few friends over this evening to do a comparison, everyone thought they were rated at the same power. Two of the attending thought the old amp sounded cleaner than the new amp.
My advise is, if you are going to buy a new Crown amp buy about $X the power you think you will need.

The "Crown D150A" is rated @ 160watts bridged @ 8 ohms.
The "Crown XLS1500" is rated @ 300watts bridged @ 8 ohms
Easy to use setup, and hook-up
Have not had the amp long enough to tell.
I paid as much for my "D150A" in 1977 as I did for the "XLS1500". However the old Crown was made in U.S.A., and the new one in China.

    Excellent Amplifier

Comments about Crown XLS1500 DriveCore Series Power Amp:

This is an amazing amp. I have only used it for a few gigs, but I am thouroghly impressed! I have pushed it to the limit inside and outside on my folded horn 18" subs. The built in "DSP" functionality is wonderful. I can use the crossovers on this amp to get exactly the sound I want, plus it has through-pass, input Y, and bridge mode funtionality!

The XLS series of amps are amazingly lightweight and sound almost as good as ... or in some cases better, than the old 70lb amps of old! I have been in IT and sound reinforement for over 10 years and have never been as impressed with an amp as I have been with the XLS series. They are cool, silent, and never break a sweat even outside on a 90 degree day pushing the limit for hours!!!

I recommend the XLS series to anyone looking for a quality amp. And don't be fooled by the appearance of low power, because even the XLS1000 can move some monsterous speakers!

I plan on buying a XLS2500 when I get my dual 18" cabs later this year! BUY THIS AMP!!!

Comments about Crown XLS1500 DriveCore Series Power Amp:

seems well built, but is only half the rated power. Most good amps exceed their rated power. Lacks deep bass. I compared this amp to a solid AB amp rated at 300 watts (8 ohm) on the other speaker so I could easily compare. Half the power and no where near the deep bass. Highs were tinty. Regardless if it is made well and lasts it's a nice device, but not at the rated watts, I would have to compare with the other digital amps to see if they are the same (less watts than advertised). If they all do it, then it's ok I guess. For the lightness it is worth the price.

Comments about Crown XLS1500 DriveCore Series Power Amp:

I have been shopping for a power amp for our band to step into the next "phase" with. Thought the qsc g5 was the answer(still think it has a lot to offer!) BUT the XLS1500 is a full 15lbs lighter! plus it has the option to bridge channels. Bought it and Fired this baby up 3 hrs later. WOW! More than enough power! played a gig outdoors next day... used less power than the night before! I can say 100% that the weight savings alone make it worth it plus a ton of clean power... stack 2 together (17 lbs) and you could rule the small stage world! I can only imagine what an XLS2000 or XLS2500 would sound like with a bigger system...

Comments about Crown XLS1500 DriveCore Series Power Amp:

This crown amp provides clean power to my ampeg tube bass preamp. I bought this because the amp that was in my bass amp rack rig was so heavy that I dreaded moving it. Once I swapped out that heavy amp for this lightweight one I was also impressed with the clean tones and high power output. It has a screen and menu options on the front of the amp that I was not accustomed too, but it was no big deal scrolling through the menu and selecting the options that I needed. Very, very impressed with the value to quality of this amp.

Comments about Crown XLS1500 DriveCore Series Power Amp:

I purchased this amp for dual purposes: replace studio amplifier that was intermittent and use for live sound reinforcement. I was slightly concerned with the higher distortion specs of a digital amplifier compared to class AB but the price was right and sound probably good enough for my studio work.
Also I did not know how often the fan would kick in which is a problem for the studio. That turned out fine as the fan has not kicked on yet in the studio.
I compared the sound to my old Adcom studio amp and the sound is noticeably thinner but passable for my use.
I haven't used for sound reinforcement yet but expect it to be fine.
My only wishes are that it would be great for me if the speakon connectors would accept 1/4" plugs as all my speaker cables are 1/4" and wish the distortion specs were better.

We ordered this unit as a replacement for an old model used with our church sound system. It is compatable with our old amplifier in the way it hooked into our sound system. The owners manual is not very specific in the digital choices for set-up. I had to call tech support. They were very helpful, and aided me in the process in minutes. So far everything is working very well; it's a powerful unit!

Comments about Crown XLS1500 DriveCore Series Power Amp:

Very good amplifier that is priced well below professional prices. The THD is higher than professional specifications, but I find that the performance is excellent. Simple to set up. Basic, raw power amplifier.

Comments about Crown XLS1500 DriveCore Series Power Amp:

I bought two of these amplifiers to power the front end and the subs. With 8 ohm speaker cabinets and 4ohm subs running them in stereo bypass they provide plenty of power and are crystal clear. There is no hissing sound, they run extremely quiet and cool plugged into a power conditioner. My band is very impressed with the quality of these light weight amplifiers (compared to the bulky heavy ones we have) and mounted in a rack case give a great appearance. After doing a lot of research I am very pleased in making an investment in these Crown amplifiers, along with the reputation that Crown has.

Comments about Crown XLS1500 DriveCore Series Power Amp:

I got two of these to use for various things in my rehearsal room. The only thing I have tried one on yet is a pair of McCauley monitors. I had not used these speakers before, so I can't say what they might sound like with a different amp, but running this through them, with just an iPod input, it sounded fine and very loud.
I bought two more. I will be using them on a pair of JBL Cabarets- 1x15" and a horn, to bi-amp the McCauleys in stereo and to run one bridged through an 18" JBL sub. I have no reason to doubt they will work and sound great.
That they have x-overs and limiters built in is very handy and extremely cost effective. In fact, this amp is very cost effective– you can't beat the price. I don't know how it would withstand the rigors of the road, but I have no plans to test it. They have 3 year warranties.
I bought two more. Can't say more than that.
