      Comments about dbx 266xs Compressor/Gate:

just wanted a gate to use with my guitar on live venues and in the studio, took product out of box and immediately channel 2 didn't work, and after about 45 minutes channel 2 stopped producing sound shortly followed by channel 1, 5 minutes later.

      Not so great for Vocals

      Comments about dbx 266xs Compressor/Gate:

I purchased the DBX 266XL 3 years ago from a retailer. At this price point it is certainly not worth the money. However, MF is selling the same compressor/gate for almost half that. My thoughts: This hardware is incredibly well built and solid. It will certainly take a beating and last a lifetime. It is easy to use, the layout makes intuitive sense and it was obviously built for ease of use. Additionally, it does what it says it does: compresses and gates sound. However, this is where the unit becomes average. I bought it specifically for vocals and unless you are only planning on the most subtle of compression, it certainly affects the warmth of your signal in a noticeable way. Vocals are certainly not what this unit does best. I now use it only for guitar and bass in both live and recording applications. Conclusion - If you're thinking about this unit to compress a vocal source, keep looking. Save up and buy something with more warmth. If you need this for guitar or bass, it works well, especially at this price.
