Comments about dbx 386 Dual-Vacuum Tube Preamp:

The dbx 386 works amazingly well for me. It's sound is far better than whatever I had been using before getting this. While the sound one gets out of their gear is a result of their entire signal chain, I noticed my sound improve by simply substituting my previous preamp with this one while still using the same mics and everything else that I had. I'm going s/pidf out of my 386 into my M-Audio profire 2626 I'm using mine primarily on vocals, and final mix routing. The thing that got me interested in this pre-amp of course is the valves, but also the fact that it's dual channel, and that it has spid/f - perfect combination. I have however been unable to slave it to my 2626 using word clock, don't know where the fault is, but I should also say the m-audio slaves to the 386 without a blink.

Comments about dbx 386 Dual-Vacuum Tube Preamp:

I've owned this unit, and it's predecessor, for a better part of 15 years. I have to say, this unit is well worth it's price. I have it running side-by-side with a more-recently-acquired 2,000 clams boutique preamp, and it fares VERY well.

Although, I still use my expensive preamp as my "go to" pre for vox and overheads, the DBX gets plenty of use as my kick/snare pre.

If my main pre ever went "poof", I'd have no big problem getting right back to work with this one!

Overall, I've been very pleased with this unit!

      DBX 386 AAA+

Comments about dbx 386 Dual-Vacuum Tube Preamp:

I bought one of these exact models from Musician's Friend about 7 or 8 years ago. Mine still works perfectly with my Pro Tools LE. Can't say enough good things about it. I run Two Shure 57's,one on each guitar cab and the signal I get from the 386 to Pro Tools is amazing. On the mix I do use a Bombfactory plug in LA2A to up the signal a tad more but without this DBX386 Preamp what I am doing quality wise just wouldn't be possible. A Must. Because the Mic's by themselves are just not enough.

      dbx 386 - A OK

      By Junkart

Comments about dbx 386 Dual-Vacuum Tube Preamp:

This is well worth the price for the recording enthusiast that has a good sound pre-recording with good mikes. The 20 dB pad & +48V is great with a condensor mike over a drum kit or low impedence inside the bass shell. The ability to output to analog and digital (s/pdif) is essential. I am very happy with it's warmth and sound, a definite A.

      Excellent Dual Channel Preamp

      By 2Gizmo

Comments about dbx 386 Dual-Vacuum Tube Preamp:

Have had this unit for about 6 months now, but have worked with the same unit in a number of studios both home & pro. If you are looking for something transparent, meaning what comes out of the monitor sounds just like the voice/instrument you put in, this is superb. Obviously, it can generate much more as well, which is why I rated it the way I did. The I/O setup gives you numerous ways in which to apply this little gem and the sound overall is warm & natural. Great Unit.

      Quite a let down...

Comments about dbx 386 Dual-Vacuum Tube Preamp:

I bought mine a few years ago. Seemed like pound for pound a good deal. After just a few sessions I realized that it was wholly unremarkable. The tubes went about 6 months ago, and I care so little that I haven't even had them fixed.

I was never happy with this this preamp. It seemed always on the boarder line of distorting. I've taken it in twice to be repaired. Other people I've talked to praise it. I don't.
