Musician/ Sound setup man

By Lon Casebolt

from Highlands county Florida

Comments about dbx AFS-224 Stereo/Dual Mono Feedback Suppression Processor:

Although this is the one and only one of the automatic feedback suppression units which I have actually used, none could perform any better than this DBX 224. It has allowed superior performance beyond what I have been able to achieve in some locations which are not very "acoustically friendly". The setup sounds to be complicated using the vendor supplied documentation, but once you get into it, it is relatively simple. The factory support staff was also very helpful in setting it up for the first time. At least there were actual people to talk to on the other end of the line.
For the first time in some venues, I have been able to get my stage monitors up to a useful level without a hint of feedback, and still hear all the stage performers in the mix. I am using a Behringer PMH 5000 powered mixer in the mono mode with one channel for the mains and the other for the monitors. With the AFS 224 connected into the insert jacks at the output end of the mix, I was able to push my monitor levels beyond the normal feedback level during the monitor ringout setup using half of the available 24 notch filters. I could hear it begin to go into feedback, and immediately see the notch filters latch up and cancel it out. In the live mode, I could visibly see the "live filter" LED's light up while pushing the system significantly above normally achievable power output levels. There was also no noticeable reduction in the sound quality because of the very narrow frequency of the notch filters. It was also very helpful to be able to see the active filters reset when they were no longer needed. I set the active filter reset time to 10 minutes, which is variable during setup. The filters can be setup for vocals, low music, medium music or loud music, which varies the filter notch width.
The quality seems to be exceptional, although time will tell more about this.
Although there are cheaper units on the market, value is much more important than price when you are performing on stage.

DBX AFS224 Advanced feedback supressor

By Blues.sound

from Houston, TX.

Comments about dbx AFS-224 Stereo/Dual Mono Feedback Suppression Processor:

This is a very effective unit. I run sound in a blues club. The stage is in the corner and has a brick wall on one side and a window on the other. Even after using an RTA, feed back could still be a problem. "Ringing the monitors" with this unit helps rid 90% of feedback. I like it.

Perfect for limited time and small venues

By Squirrel

from Texas

Comments about dbx AFS-224 Stereo/Dual Mono Feedback Suppression Processor:

This device is perfect for running sound in small venues, clubs, and bars when there is minimal setup time. With this device I can ring out the monitors in less than a minute and be ready to go. This device is well built and catches feedback frequencies surprisingly fast. It allows me to run my monitors more than 25% louder (judged by volume knob positioning) with no feedback. I would recommend this for anyone that doesn't have the time or experience to ring out their monitors with a 31 band EQ. I only recommend this device on monitors as it does add some coloration of sound that is not suitable for FOH.

Now This One Works!

By StratMan62

from Summerville, SC

Comments about dbx AFS-224 Stereo/Dual Mono Feedback Suppression Processor:

I've had and tried a few different feedback units but this is the one to get! I used it in my live monitor rig this weekend and it worked great and couldn't even hear the difference thanks to the 1/80 octave notch filters! Others I've tried were too sensitive and sucked the life out of the sound. Then I went with 31 band EQ's with feedback detection which also worked well because you could see what frequency was causing the problem and then notch. However, even with this type of notching the 1/3 octave frequency cuts can also punch holes in your sound pretty badly if you're not carful. This unit is the best I've used so far and I'm buying another for my FOH. Very easy to use and it does the job! Great piece of equipment!
