Well Hidden Wonder

Comments about dbx RTA-M Reference Microphone for DriveRack PA:

I never bought these to use with the DBX RTA, but rather as a wild chance at some decent live recording mics. The first night I used them, I fell in love. Blow away the Behringer measurement mics by far. Clean, flat, high spl, unreal. I have used 4 of these hummers for live shows for almost a year now, never, NEVER found anything to complain about. I love them.

Comments about dbx RTA-M Reference Microphone for DriveRack PA:

I've been using RTA and FFT analyzers since the hand held LED based units in the 80s. The technology for doing acoustic measurements in venue have gotten a lot more sophisticated in three decades, but they still count on having the right microphone.

A recent software upgrade from Presonus has added room analysis capabilities to their Studio Live consoles (16.4.2 & 24.4.2), and I wanted to take advantage of this functionality.

A RTA mic has a pretty pretty boring job...sit on top of a stand and listen, and the DBX does a fine job at that. I had the opportunity to compare the DBX to a very expensive ($1300) Earthworks analysis mic.

The Earthworks had a ridiculous frequency response (up to 50kHz), but in the audio spectrum that most of us work in for live music (30Hz to 18kHz), the DBX was just about as flat at significantly less cost.

I was using Behringer RTA mics on a laptop based system prior to this, but after having two of them break I was done with them and wanted something more rugged.

The case the DBX came in is probably overkill, but you can be relatively sure that the mic will arrive to the gig in one piece.

I've seen bands just throw any old microphone up in front of an RTA and try to shoot the room. Want to really screw up your measurement? Put a SM-57 there and watch what happens. No, if you're going to go to the trouble of actually trying to see what the room acoustics are, you need a proper mic, and for the money it's hard to beat the DBX.

As an added bonus, I tried it for recording an acoustic guitar...and it sounded wonderful.

Again, an RTA mic is not the most glamorous piece of equipment you'll buy. But if you have room analysis capabilities, you need this mic to do it right.

Looks well made. Just for fun I moved it a few inches after running the eq wizard and it actually showed slightly different results....impressive. Also fits nicely in provided clip.
