The actual console is great, feels good, faders work nice and most of the features I want are directly on the board. Pro tools however is a great product that can cause you a lot of headaches. Crashes, errors, and bugs were all I got for a few days, but now everything seems to be running smoothly. Remember no pro audio software is devoid of bugs or a long setup process.

I bought this ?Pro? a few months ago, and now have realized that I have stopped making music.Instead of being creative, I?m a protools 003 owner. The time I used to spend making music is now spent taking care of this system; Searching the web for tech help, restarting my computer, cleaning out my preferences, pleading with the air plugin makers for fixes to my protools problems, tweaking my system to trying and get a workable latency and being a technical diplomat between competing 3rd party plugins.I have had it.I have Digital Performer 6, Logic8 and Ableton Live8 and this thing....003. These other applications just work. The 003 and PT8 require lots and lots of prep. The 003 doesn't like other audio hardware, so my 3 motu 828?s had to go, whatever, I?m a pro with ?Protools? now. The 003 also doesn?t really like other audio applications, so you may try and use it as an audio interface with great difficulty, but the control surface is Protools only. Also, buy the AIR plugins and you may only use them with Protools, that is, certain versions of PT and the MacOS, you are not allowed to use the latest version of the MacOS until Digidesign waits a year or so the approve it with an update. Many of your Native Instruments will not work well with Protools, so take half your collection that you come to love and fire them. When using Protools 8 and 003, get ready for lots and lots of dialogues jumping up during playback telling you that your system can?t handle the workload of those five VIs that you are running on your brand new dual quad core 3.0GHz macpro with 8 gigs of ram. Playback will stop and sometime you will need to quit and restart Protools to get it going again. About once a week I need to shut everything down and reboot just to get PT working. Protools also doesn?t like other app like iTunes or applications that do complex things like play audio.Pros: PT8 and the 003 might be pretty good if that?s all you do with your computer. Nice interface and good sound.Cons: This system reminds me of my 1983 Saab 950 turbo. Costs way too much and spent half the time in the shop getting fixed. Does not play nice with other audio apps and plugins and the protools community will tell you it?s your fault.I regret buying this system and would sell it in an instant.

I don't think some of these reviews reflect the performance of this thing. I think the preamps and convertors sound great. And you got 48k adat as well. You can get a nice a/d and/or d/a converter and some more preamps and record 16 tracks of 48k audio. The whole industry is in this fuss about sample rates and does it really matter. I'm in the boat that I can't hear any difference between 44.1 and 88.2 samples. What you look for is signal-to-noise and crosstalk and frequency range on a/d converters. If you spend some money on mics and preamps, this, in my opinion, is the cheapest way to have a very powerful core to your home or project studio. Most native plug-ins support RTAS and AS format, so no worry about giving up you're precious UAD or Powercore plug-in processors. The bomb factory plug-ins are amazing. The cosmonaut voice plug-in is one of the coolest plug-ins I have ever had the chance to use. I could go on for days.Just make sure you have a speedy computer. Latency is no problem if you do. THe monitoring section is handy to do a/b speaker tests. If you record rock bands and are not afraid to spend a little cash (not pro-tools/HD cash or Apogee/Logic Studio cash) and you want to step up to pro-tools, now is the time. You can build a studio that I would record an album in, for sure.

If you are considering the Digi 003 Factory Pro Tools LE Workstation, check to make sure it is compatible with your hardware and software. If you have a Mac, no problem for the most part. If you have PC, check to make sure it is compatible with the software. Otherwise you may end up with a workstation you can't use because the software doesn't work with your machine. Pro Tools likes Mac's, Intel and XP. It's good hardware software. No doubt. However my recommendation from lessons learned is to go to Digidesign's website and use their compatibility chart to check out your machine. If you have yet to buy a PC, then you're in good shape because ou will know what to buy in advance. It will save you bucks in the end.

I recently purchased a Digi 03 and I'm not all that impressed. The layout of the board is not logical and most functions are rather awkward. I realized the limited number of XLRs/balanced inputs before I bought it, but didn't think it would be a big deal, after using the board, I miss the ability to run more than 4 XLRs inputs simultaneously. It's a cool board, but for the $$$ they should have thought things through.

I got this little gem a few weeks ago and started running it with a mac pro. It loaded up easy and I was recording in a few minutes. I am new to pro tools and found it easy to use right away. But one thing was clear.... The preamps are not the greatest, I would never attempt to record soley with the control surface pre's. I ran some stuff through a avalon737 sp and it was all good. I plan on linking up this systym with my alesis hd24xr recorder and a old school console with alot of outboard gear. The console/alesis setup has way more clarity and richness to the sound. so far my recording on the pro tools sounds a little thin and muddy( Without the avalon) overall this is a great entry level setup for those new to the tools. I'm not selling my old rig anytime soon.
