OVERVIEW

Designer digital audio for the home studio.

The Digidesign Mbox Factory Bundle includes the Mbox I/O unit, Music Production Enhancement Suite, standard Bomb Factory plug-ins, moogerfooger Analog Delay, JOEMEEK SC2 Compressor, JOEMEEK VC5 Meequalizer, Cosmonaut Voice, Maxim, and a pre-authorized iLok smart key.

Mbox System Overview

Each Mbox system includes Pro Tools LE software, a host of DigiRack plug-ins, the Music Production Enhancement Suite, and the recently integrated Free Bomb Factory plug-ins.

The Essentials

Mbox is a full-featured, USB-powered studio-in-a-box that works with your Window XP- or Mac OS X-based computer to give you a compact, portable, professional-quality audio production system. Comprised of a small, upright I/O unit and featuring 2 Focusrite mic preamps, Mbox works in conjunction with your computer and your Pro Tools LE software to provide the firepower necessary for quality results. Complementing Mbox's analog and digital I/O, Pro Tools LE software offers 32 tracks of simultaneous record and playback, 128 virtual tracks, 256 MIDI tracks, and a host of additional features. As with all Pro Tools systems, it also ships with a variety of free bundled software tools and plug-ins, including Moogerfooger Analog Delay, Joemeek SC2 Compressor, Joemeek VC5 Meequalizer, Cosmonaut Voice, and Maxim. From beginning to end, Mbox places you in an ideal position to realize any project.

Enhancers

While Mbox is fully functional in and of itself, many products are available to increase the scope and performance of your Mbox-based Pro Tools LE environment. High-powered RTAS (real-time) and AudioSuite (file-based) plug-ins, designed and built by Digidesign and its Development Partners, are available for virtually every signal processing, sound design, and specialized editing purpose. These software applications work in conjunction with Pro Tools LE in both non- realtime and realtime formats, emulating and often improving on the hardware counterparts that they frequently emulate. The addition of a FireWire drive is also a wise choice, improving the performance of your system by virtue of increased throughput and data transfer speeds. And you always have access to upgrades and updates to Pro Tools LE software, typically available for free to registered users, as we continue to develop new ways of improving your Pro Tools experience.

Included With All Pro Tools LE Systems

When you buy a Pro Tools LE interface you get an incredible Music Production Enhancement Suite that includes Reason Adapted, Ableton Live Digidesign Edition, IK Multimedia SampleTank SE, IK Multimedia AmpliTube LE, and IK Multimedia T-RackS EQ.

Reason Adapted

An easy-to-use studio package providing a
virtual rack of innovative synthesizers, samplers, and effects along with a mixer and MIDI support. All sound from Reason Adapted can be streamed directly into the Pro Tools mixer via ReWire for additional processing.

Ableton Live Digidesign Edition

A flexible, incredibly intuitive sample sequencer application that enables you to create, modify, and play back loops, phrases, and songs via Ableton's "elastic audio" technology. Multiple
samples can be automatically played back simultaneously at a user-defined tempo, and, as with Reason, all audio readily finds its way into Pro Tools via ReWire.

IK Multimedia AmpliTube LE

A guitar processing plug-in, AmpliTube LE gives
you easy access to several amplifier and cabinet
models as well as classic stompbox and other
effects. Use them on guitars and/or experiment with other track treatments.

IK Multimedia T-RackS EQ

The EQ module from IK Multimedia's acclaimed T-RackS analog mastering suite, T-RackS EQ, offers Pro Tools users a powerful, tube-modeled parametric EQ to use during mixing and mastering.

IK Multimedia SampleTank SE

A powerful sample playback module providing quick access to a host of included samples and the ability to move easily between them. Acting as a plug-in within the Pro Tools mixer, SampleTank SE enables you to start creating in Pro Tools immediately.

NOTE: Registered users of IK products are entitled to an upgrade to the IK Studio Bundle an awesome suite of music production tools.

I love my Mbox. I have had it since October 2004 and I have recorded soo many songs with it. It is the perfect companion for song writing. If I have a song idea, I make up the seperate drum parts and fills with REDRUM in Reason Adapted, save them as AIFF, import them to Pro Tools LE, record the guitar and bass parts, and show my band mates a better product then the band can reproduce live. The quality of this little box is outstanding, and Pro Tools is a joy to use. Instalation on my ol' iMac G3 was not a problem (until I upgraded to Mac OS 10.3.2 and upgraded my RAM). I have even recorded full bands with my Mbox with surprisingly great results. How you ask with only two inputs? I connect a mixer with 10 mic preamps into the two line inputs on the Mbox from the main outs on the mixer with two balanced TRS cables and set up the mics (and a BBE Sonic Maximizer in both inserts on Mbox, makes it sound so much better!) and you can now mic a drum set! Sure it's not the greatest set up, but it works okay, though it is a pain to only be able to work with two channels. I gave it a 7 for features and 8 for value because altough you get great Focusrite mic pres with DI and Pro Tools with some neat plug-ins, it's still only two channel and USB when similar products (Presonus Firebox) are priced the same, but offer much more. I would've given quality a ten, but it was once dropped and the blue face came off the front and this is marketed as a mobile recording device, but other than that it's great and so is the sound quality. I one day plan to save up enough and purchase a Firepod and record drums with the Firepod in Cubase LE or whatever, export all tracks as WAV's, import those into Pro Tools, and mix and record everything else with Pro Tools and Mbox. Pro Tools is the best.

P4 compatibility!

By Chiroy163

from Chicago, IL

If you are considering the purchase of an Mbox for use with a Pentium 4 system running Windows XP, I would recommend that you first check out Digidesign's website for compatibility issues with certain motherboards. I didn't do this until it was too late. There are three chipsets that are listed as incompatible, and they are fairly common on newer, higher-end P4 motherboards. Unfortunately, my board was one of the ones listed, and I can confirm that the Mbox is unusable with the Intel 915P chipset! Musician's Friend will not accept returns on this item if it has been opened, as it is considered software, so I ended up swapping out my motherboard. My Mbox now works great, but my additional expense in time and money was considerable. Beware!

Excellent

By SonofTarzan

Excellent product. Has it's limitations (only 2 ins, max 48khz converters), but it is an excellent product for any beginner or someone who needs mobility. Don't be intimidated by other reviews of this item. I don't intend to down anybody, but keep in mind that we are all involved in music, but we don't all have the same level of intelligence. What is difficult for one person, can be easy to someone else. This product was very simple to install and get up and running, yet you will read reviews claiming it is difficult. Whether this proudct or another, trust your abilities and intelligence before deciding that a product will be to "complicated" to use.

Overwhelming at First

Before i purchased this, I knew nothing about recording. I talked to a few people and came to the conclusion that this was what I wanted. When I first opened the box, I was overwhelmed with all of the software and manuals. I didn't know where to start. After about 30 mins i sifted through it all and after anouther 30 mins I got it up and running. The software is easy to learn, the M-box basics guide included takes you step by step through basic tasks. I only wish it had a couple more line ins so I could record drums into it without a mixer. Before I got it, I was under the impression it had 4 lines ins, but it only has 2 XLR inputs that double as 1/4 stereo inputs. Over all great product for anyone who doesn't want to spend money for a demo and has basic computer knowledge. Be sure to check the system requirements on the Digidesign website, they are strict.

I'm content

I haven't comepletely sat down with the software on my computer, and it's a little confusing to get started with, but once you figure out the software, its pretty easy. Also make sure this works with your computer because you do have to take some time preparing your computer so make sure it has the right specs for this program.

Very good!

By Anonymous

from Undisclosed

I have been using the Mbox for about 2 years. It is a very clean sounding unit. The Protools LE program is fairly easy to use. The included effects are decent. I would highly recommend this if you want to be able to easily record, and get clean sounding tracks. Also, make sure you get some monitors, because using headphones, or computer speakers is a very bad choice.

I've found the mbox to be a god send. I've produced 2 Albums worth of material w/ mine. I am amazed at the sound quality ease of use. I've got some great pro like recordings, had them mastered at a professional studio. Very easy midi sync, great plugins. This is a great introduction to digital recording. Now I want an HD rig. I need a loan!

Thunder Down Under

By Marc Pernell

Ok. So you've used Pro Tools. But have you ever been able to take your whole studio with you? I can answer that with a resounding "YES". My friends, being a black American producer in Sydney, Australia, has its benefits. I have enough work to keep me busy year round. (Blessed? Yes!) Now I can take the studio with me and not be "chained" to the chair in the studio. Instead of having fast food delivered to me, I can go get it! I have not only Digidesign's equipment in the studio, I have it on the road! I've been able to record vocalists at their job site on their lunch break! It doesn't get any better than this! Thank you Digidesign for the Mbox. You've made ALL of Sydney my recording studio!

Digidesign MBox

By Castro Beats

from New York, NY

This lil router lookin thing is great, ahah. I connect my MPC-1000 and Proteus 2000 and soon my Behringer UB1222 and GeminiXL200. The MBox gives me great feedback, excellent quality, and the best part is that it doesn't get more professionl then Pro Tools to record everything in. I highly recommend to the Home Studio Owners.

Dated only in a good way

By Jesse-z9N0D

from Undisclosed

This is still up to recording par and is so much easier than analog (tracker) recording, there is no comparison. I see a lot of reviews here saying that is harsh on the computer: this is the only thing that seems dated about Mbox is its system requirements that must have at one time been a lot. My computer was purchased within the year with no upgrades, and it has absolutely no problems. To help you know how good you need your computer to be, I have 512 ram, 80 GB, 2.1 AMD processor. That just isn't that high by todays standards, but it is plenty high for pro tools.
