        IF YOU ARE EXPERIENCING FEEDBACK PROBLEMS WITH THIS PEDAL, IT IS YOUR OWN FAULT, AND THIS IS WHAT YOU DO TO FIX IT.
        1. Never take this thing to a sound man and just tell him to hook you in. Your studio settings will be completely different than your live settings in some very critical ways. Keep reading.
        2. Go back and visit your "Guitar Player 101" class. Remember how you had to turn down your main volumes and channel gains each time you powered up/down, and/or changed your cabling? It's not rocket science, guys.
        3. This is the one that some of you will catch and some won't. In a live setting, stick with low or medium compression, and don't turn the preamp gain all the way to the max.
        4. This is the one that a lot of you will miss, cause it isn't obvious. We all love having the noise gate get rid of annoying hums and off-axis noise when we're not singing into the mic. But, you must TURN THE THRESHOLD DOWN AS LOW AS POSSIBLE WHILE STILL FILTERING THE UNWANTED NOISE. If the threshold is up too high, it will block low volume sound and the sound guy will start turning up the gain. Then when you sing, the signal it lets through will be so strong it will instantly loop with no warning at all, and you will be lucky if the only thing you damage is your ears.
        It seems a lot of people need this information. The features on this pedal are just incredible. The things it can do with your vocals are mind-boggling. But, more importantly, if you are trying to use this thing live and you are having feedback problems, then you seriously need to keep reading. I will tell you how to solve this problem once and for all in the appropriate sections. The only "feature" related item I can find to complain about is the Master volume. Every time you power down and power back up, it defaults to 50 percent. If you happen to have it in a high gain configuration, it gets really annoying to have to remember to turn it up every time you turn it on.
        I have beaten this thing to heck for about six year in both live and studio applications. The only problems I have with reliability are common to everything that uses a wall wart. I wish someone would figure out how to make a power supply which doesn't develop an internal wire break right up at the transformer. Now, if you accidentally step on the dials above the pedalboard (like I did), there's a good chance that the potentiometers will develop intermittent dial creep (like mine have). There's no such thing as a volume pot strong enough to take the weight of a full-grown man. If you're prone to spilling your beer on it (like I am), you should take a computer technicians course at your local community college. And, learn how to clean a printed circuit board with cotton swabs and denatured alcohol. After six years of heck, it finally developed a "wear-and-tear" issue (as opposed to my abuse). The "up" pedal no longer works, so in order to change presets, I have to let it cycle through all 80 to get back to the one. But, it's pretty fast in doing so, so it's really a non-issue.
        Digitech really knocked it out of the park on this one. The dozens of things I don't need in this pedal are infinitely less important than having present, convenient, and immediate control ONSTAGE of the most critical parts of my vocal presentation. Not to mention the assignable pedal control. We've all seen a wicked guitar doing divebombs with his Floyd Rose tremolo. But, have you heard a vocalist do it with his voice? And, guess what? No more idiot sound engineers who get drunk and forget to turn on the digital delay for the one phrase in that one song.

        I make industrial music and this unit is absolutely fantastic for studio use. It gave me the exact sound I had been looking for; it is great for excellent warm and thick distorted vocals. I'm not sure how the other effects are on this thing, but I can't really see why anyone who isnt't looking for really insane vocal effects would get this.The HUGE problem with this thing though, is performing live (which is the whole reason I bought it). If I use distortion (overdrive) it causes an INSANE amount of feedback, even if I turn the gain way down and i'm not using monitors (don't even think about trying to use monitors). I had to buy a feedback destroyer and even that doesn't totally fix the problem. I was experimenting with it the other night and even other setting which do not use the overdrive were causing lots of feedback. I would not recommend using this box live, but it is great for use in the studio when you don't have to hook it up to huge speakers.

        Just like the first review I read before buying, if you're going to buy this processor read the instructions first! Turn down your volume on the pedal and whatever you're going through first, then turn up the volume as needed for all settings. It has everything I want in a pedal except good harmonies. The effects are great sounding and most have adjustable parameters. For the price I got a great deal.

        Vocal 400 VEF

        I actually have the 400, which has a USB interface. It was quickly discontinued, and I have no idea why. This unit is amazing! You can not only control all the settings from a Windows user interface, you can store the presets in files and call them back up. Want to test a change for a few days but keep the old settings just incase? no problem. It doesn't end there.. I can use the device an an audio I/O and record via USB, or send vocals to the unit, process them and save to a new track. I've used this device for at least 5 years and it's still going strong. I use it both for live performances and at home in my studio. You can do just about everything the newer, more expensive units will do except for harmonies. I'd prefer a rack mount as I don't really make changes in the middle of a song and I take this thing with me everywhere I sing. I have a small rackmount box with my wireles mic mounted in it and this thing on top so it's been beat up quite a bit.
        I am actually rating the 400, which is just like the 300 only with USB. The features are awesome for such an inexpensive device. You can chain a full path of modeling all the way through to the output. I didn't really need the peddle but I did play with it. The peddle is nice but the only thing I would change is having the unit note the position of the peddle when changing presets or turning the unit on. You must remember to move the peddle all the way up then down so the unit will position the assigned effect to the proper level. As for feedback, I use some very modeled presets and like a very sensitive mic and I never had an issue if I've staged the signal properly. Take a signal staging 101 class and you'll be fine.
        The thing seemed kinda cheaply made but it's help up like a tank. Never had a second's problem with it. The mic input level knob is very touchy and that's why I gave it a 9.
        This is a LOT of vocal processor for very little dough.

        great little toy

        i was looking for something to put between my mic and (featureless) amp to add some bass and reverb for vocals. i ran across this and thought the extra features would be fun for my pre-teen daughter and her friends. i was right, it has enough features for me to be happy and enhance singing vocals. the "fun" voices are amazing. there are incredibly good effects to perfectly imitate alvin and the chipmunks, the chipettes, helium, robots, monsters, AH-NOLD in true lies as the interrogator and TONS more. what i would REALLY like to see in there would be some auto-tune functionality for karaoke, but to be honest, it might be in there and i haven't seen it yet. there is A LOT going on in there, but you can be having fun in 30 seconds without opening the manual.
        it's a lot of money for what is mostly a toy, but it is a very nice quality toy with lots of features.

        Don't even think of using this Live...

        If you're looking for a vocal processor for studio stuff, and to play with in the rehearsal space, you can have some fun with the DigiTech Vocal 300 Vocal Effects Processor. It has some pretty good pre-sets, and it's intuitive and easy to use. Taking this thing on stage, is a big mistake unless you love feedback, and not the warm "artsy" kind. This unit gives off a dreadful, and piercing digital feedback that is so annoying, that you will send this unit flying across the room as you scream in frusration and rage, only to end up back here on this website looking for another one. Don't make me say I told you so. I'm just being honest; It's pretty much a toy.

        I use it as a sax FX for live performance

        Fun device. Can be used professionally live if you stick to a few level adjusted settings, otherwise you will become the sound engineer's worse nightmare and he will keep your volume low out of fear. I've programmed my own settings for live tenor sax: namely, slap back delay, long delay, reverb, octave down doubler, and auto wah. The pedal is not used for volume because you MUST send a consistent level to the PA. So instead it is reprogrammed for FX mix %. Pedal back is minimal FX mix level for live performance, and more pedal brings up the FX level for those quieter rehearsals where your acoustic sax volume is competing and you need more FX in the mix to hear it at all.I highly recommend you use the quarter inch output into a Direct Box (a cheap passive DI is fine). This seems to solve some signal level matching problems and noise some people experience, and provides a ground lift switch. The direct box goes out to the board, and you can mult out from the DI to a keyboard amp to manage your own stage volume (nice to be able to hear yourself).The negatives: there is no delay tempo tap button. The foot switches are too easy to accidentally press. Just placing your foot next to it will press it. Many times I've look down and see it cycling through the settings because my foot is against it. Also, I have to look down to hit bypass or change the patch. For a sax player this means moving the sax away from the mike a couple seconds. This is a real problem when I'm supposed to go directly into a solo and have to switch settings while playing. I'd rather have some more widely spaced switches that can be pressed blindly while performing. These are too close together for that. I'd love to see digitech come out with an upscale model that is more adapted to professional live performance. For the price though, this works pretty good.

        Purple Magic Box

        I have used this gear live for more than 100 gigs. So I feel qualified to say something about this FX processor. Let me get the negative out of the way. It has a lot of effects, but there are only a small handful that is useful for a serious singer. Most of the 40 presets are down right amateurish. It also has feedback issues. After three years the pedal no longer works. I do not know exactly the technical issue of that. Maybe it's an easy fix, but I do not use the pedal much anyway. Now the question is this. If mine got stolen would I buy another one? The answer is YES! Let me explain why and go on with the positive points. The small handful effects are worth the price. There are a few reverbs, delay, and pre amps that are pretty good. Not to mention that the de-esser is beneficial. With a little bit of time and experimentation you can find a setting that can prevent and minimize the feedback issue. The key is in the EQ, and also knowing the position of the gain knob, since the gain can be very hot at just 25%. The other key of making this gear shine is to know what kind of microphone you are going to use. If you use a Shure Sm58 microphone it won't be that hard to adjust, but if you are going to plug a higher end dynamic microphone you might have a more problems with feedback cause of a hotter signal, and you would have to readjust the whole setting. So my advice is to choose whatever microphone you want and stick with it with your adjusted level. Then save that preset. You can that afterwards assign your pedal as a wet/dry effect controller or a programmed millisecond delay you might have for a song, or simply use it as a volume pedal. For a long time singers did not have control over their effects as guitarist, and the DigiTech Vocal 300 was one of the first stomp processors available for vocalists. In recent years I have tested the TC Helicon Voice Tone pedals and I've tried them and I thought that they fell short for what I wanted to do. The DigiTech Vocal 300 is the only one it's price range that offers FX, EQ, Pre-Amp, De-Esser all in a box. Conclusion: As years go by I am marveled that this DigiTech purple box is still being sold in music stores and that DigiTech company still puts them out. I have used this gear successfully in certain situations and obviously abandoned it when I am playing in festivals or a large venue, but have on occasion use it in a large venue despite that their was a sound man available, because I did not trust his mix by listening how the previous band sounded vocally. This is the whole reason of why I thought that a stomp effects unit was needed even before the Vocal 300 came out. Now one might think how serious of a musician am I if I am singing through a cheap unit? I am a seasoned singer that knows you do not need to buy expensive equipment to always sound good, and I am also a seasoned singer that knows that some engineers are so bad at theirs jobs that I can make a cheap unit sound better that them. What good is that you have Lexicons, TC Electronics, and you don't know how to use it professionally? I am by no way saying that this unit can compete with the higher end products I have mentioned in the last sentence. The unit sounds very good if you know how to use it. The main key is use the FX sparingly and tastefully, and experiment with the EQ to make it work for you.

        Some of the FX on here are useful, with a fair amount of tweaking and mixing, some are not so useful, some are just flat out silly. I only use it for studio work, can't speak on a live situation. For the full price, I think it's over rated, if however you can get it for a few $$ off, I would say without a doubt get it, especially if you have a small home studio, where every little gadget can help your sound library.
