Except for multi-recording voices on tape and playing it back during shows, this unit is unique and a superior voice product.I create MIDI files with the harmonizing chourus on Chan/Track 3, Drums on Chan/Track 10, other stuff on the other chans, and then go live with my guitar and a complete one man show. The foot switch is a great accessory for bypassing harmony, killing reverb, or switching to another Volcalist option.Noteworthy - 1. The Reverb setting is not a global setting and changes with your midi file. Therefore, set up your Reverb Level on the midi track (I use 34.)2. You can opt to mix your voice or use the MIDI notes for your voice. Taking your voice off the midi track will allow you to "HUMANIZE" your triplets and dynamics.3. Pre-test your midi sets. Some midi sys-file commands can lock your Volcalist into a harmony.4. You can adjust the harmonize track for no MIDI volume and still get the harmony on your voice GET FEATURE.5. LIVE BAND - Timing is critical. You have to be able to trust your keyboard player to enter the harmony while you sing, not a MIDI file.6. You can adjust the level of the harmony vocals on the unit. SUPER!!!7. You can get a richer sound if you have two singers, one doing back up vocals and the other singing lead.8. program your -3 -2 -1 0 +1 +2 +3 transposers together so that you can easily switch it during your act.9. The sound is so good that you should try to refrain from using it all the time.Great Unit for practice, recording, and live shows. I have used it at wedding ceremonies for Choir arrangements, backing up karaoke singers at parties, and at home for fun. It is a great tool and gives you great compliments.
I have owned this unit for over 3 years. I bought it for live work, because I often play solo. I use it in MIDI mode, driven live by my keyboard. I've spent many hours trying every reasonable permutation of settings I could think of - probably tried each one 10 times, both live (during practice) and have recorded again and again so that I could really hear what I sounded like. The result? (Envelope please...) Could someone teach me how to sell it on eBay?I guess I'm either going to have to keep sounding "solo", or else will have to shell out a whole ton of $ for a TC Electronics device or whatever. Again, I really tried to make this thing "Sing", and always did so with a "can-do" attitude. But alas, that didn't make a lot of difference to the actual sound.
We got this unit to provide background harmonies in a recording and in a live situation. Turns out it's pretty easy to use and it does an excellent job, especially live. In the studio, where there is less noise and everything is more noticeable, sometimes the harmonies sound robotic and vocoder-like when in midi-mode. In scale mode, however, it's more pure vocal and you can choose what voicings you want for the chord, including doubling the lead vocal. While it's a pain to have to change key signatures every song, you can set them as presets and use a pedal or punch a button to call up the presets. great reverb in this thing too. For the money I feel it was a great investment. It's interesting to note that nobody else makes anything that comes close.
This is going to figure out what note I'm singing, make up three or four harmonies based on a key, and produce them sounding like me in real time? For that price?!?Right. Sure. And that's exactly what happened.
I bought this unit with other expectations in mind. My music genre doesn't necessarily fit with this unit. HOWEVER, I AM GLAD I BOUGHT IT. This device would be awesome for blues, jazz, country, acoustical rock. I was looking for something that was a little grittier to give me that EFX Chester Bennington or Marilyn Manson uses. I simply made a error in judgement. I have found ways to utilize this product which make it indispensable!!! Like the fact you can patch your keyboard in and harmonize your voice using the keys on your keyboard. Awesome.
I play Trumpet and Flugelhorn, and I use a Alesis Quadraverb 2 to add effects to my sound, from my Audio Technica wireless. I was trying to also find a effect that would make it sound like more than one horn. I wondered if the Vocalist works for vocals from a mic, why wouldn't it work for a horn. Well it does. It works great. Other than setting the key and trying the different majors & minors to get the best sound, it is very easy to use. I have had a lot of compliments and questions of "how can you play harmony with yourself?". I have not really tried it with vocals but it works great with instruments.
