A Great Start for Your 1st Audio Interface

By DJ Savra

from Mesa, AZ

This is actually quite a nice audio interface for the money. It has a diverse selection of inputs and outputs. The only 2 mic pre's at the front of the breakout box aren't fantastic, but they do the job. Turn them up to about 12 o'clock to get any level from the mics at all, and from there, they're very sensitive. But really, that's the least of your problems. The DSP virtual mixer allows you to do all of your internal routing and even has some built-in effects (e.g. compression, phase shifter, reverb, etc.), but overall I found that, while these effects are quite nice to have, if you plan on using any D.A.W. for your recording, they're simply not practical to use "pre-fader" so to speak. Other than that, you can set up as many virtual channel strips as you need straight from the DSP mixer. Routing possibilities from internal processors to outboard gear are endless, allowing you to set up physical sends and returns to a hardware unit or bus your entire mix through an outboard compressor and then to a CD recorder if you like.My biggest gripe about this piece of gear is the type of sound drivers it offers for recording. In order to record any of your multiple inputs, you must bus them to a single stereo WDM driver, disallowing you to record multiple instruments individually. This means that you'll be doing a lot of overdubbing, so unless you're a solo producer/artist like me, you'll be frustrated with the fact that you cannot simultaneously record each of your band members on individual virtual channels. This makes using a D.A.W. like Cakewalk's Sonar or Steinberg's Cubase useless in this application. The only other solution that I can think of is to use an outboard D.A.W. with a hardware mixer, but this pretty much defeats the purpose of the audio interface. Try a different product if you cannot live with these things. On a final note, if you are using Reason production software, this audio interface has all of the ASIO drivers that you need, allowing you up to (I think it's 32) individual virtual channels to record on a D.A.W. Just make sure your D.A.W. supports ReWire. That's all for now!
