If you need 12x12 channels and want to utilize the power of the linux DAW tools, I highly recommend this unit. It worked for me out of the box. I'm recording 12 mics simultaneously with real time effects using Ardour. The sound quality is spectacular. Within a couple hours I was had professional sounding recordings without breaking a sweat!

I have owned this Audiofire 12 unit for about a year and a half. The sound that comes out of this thing is simply amazing. I can't imagine something with better sound at any price. However there is one serious flaw with this unit. The drivers for this (and all Echo products) do not allow two programs on the same computer to play audio at the same time. So if I am working in my sequencer and need to open an audio editor seperately I cannot do it without closing the sequencer. That may not be a problem for some people, but it is a showstopper for me. It is also not possible to record the units output through software on the same computer, another showstopper. I have e-mailed Echo about it and they basically confirmed the fact that you can't do it but didn't give me any hope that they would change it in future releases. Their driver packages specifically state "multi-client audio". I don't know what they are referring to but it isn't what I thought it would be. Don't be fooled. I love the sound of this thing, but I feel like i'm banging my head against the wall with the software. Gonna have to sell it.

Outstanding Interface for Tracking

Cons

    Best Uses

Comments about Echo AudioFire12 12-Channel FireWire Audio Interface:

I just picked up a second Audiofire 12 used because they were on backorder. I run the 2 units daisy chained into a Dell Core-Duo Windows XP (average at best) with 2GB of RAM. I added a solid state drive for recording the tracks to. I can record 24 channels at 24bit 48kHZ with no dropouts.

This is a plain jane unit with 12 TRS in and Out and midi. I use Cakewalk Sonar X2 Producer for my DAW. Setup took 10 minutes. I use a Soundtracs Topaz 32x8 mixer for my frontend and run the direct outs to the audiofires. I do my mixing in the box, so once I have the tracks recorded, I move them to my new PC with much more CPU and RAM for mixing.

I have been using my original unit since ~2008 and have had ZERO problems. I highly recommend this to someone who wants a quality interface and already has mic pre's. While I haven't tried it yet, I could easily run the 24 outputs back to the Soundtracs line ins and use the flip button to mix down on the desk.

When the new lot comes in, get you one.

Awesome Converters! Works perfectly with PT 9!

    By Jeff Steinborn

Comments about Echo AudioFire12 12-Channel FireWire Audio Interface:

The perfect interface for those who don't need built in mic pre's!
Amazing A/D Converters, same as the ones in RME' interfaces that cause twice as much. Made of metal so its solid.
Not going to find more I/O for 3 times as much

    Terrible.
There is no input volume at all and the mixing console is the most terrible thing I have ever worked with. This thing sucks

    Rock solid, good sound quality

    By Brian C---NCT

    from Los Angeles

Comments about Echo AudioFire12 12-Channel FireWire Audio Interface:

I have used several Echo products and they have always been rock solid and great value for the money. The audiofire12 is no exception. I wish Echo was a larger company and could afford to advertise because there products just work. I think a big reason there prodcuts sell is by word of mouth. I have used several AF4's and AF8's and recently started using the AF12 to replace some of those other ones because I needed even more I/O. It is perfect for line level work where you don't need preamps or other features. In fact I love that the analog audio doesn't pass through cheap preamps before the ADC's. It has been rock solid on Windows XP and Vista with low latency. The front panel metering is very simple and even from far away it is easy to see which I/O's are active.

    Perfect for Ableton Live!

    By Chaynlynk

    from Ohio

Comments about Echo AudioFire12 12-Channel FireWire Audio Interface:

This thing is perfect for Live users. It enables us to have our 3 guitars, 2 synths (4 channels), vocals, all plugged in and processed though the puter. We can then take stereo feeds of voice, guitar, bass, synth, and drums to the sound tech at venues so he can mix. It's perfect for a live band using Live. No latency or disconnect issues.

Comments about Echo AudioFire12 12-Channel FireWire Audio Interface:

i actually down graded from a rme multiface and was surprised at how much better this unit sounds compared to the rme i needed more ins and outs and this baby can record all 12 channels at once with no problem, im going to ad another unit in the near future, if you already have a MIXER and need lots of ins and outs nothing beats this and the sound is grade a i dont think it gets any better.

    Echo audio interfaces sound great

    By RebelGrrl

    from Austin, TX

Comments about Echo AudioFire12 12-Channel FireWire Audio Interface:

Echo Audiofire 12 - Sweet sound, low latency, no noise. I have a couple of synths and a mic pre plugged in and have plenty of inputs for expansion, so I don't need a mixer. Stable drivers from their web site. I've got it connected to a Dell laptop with a Belkin firewire card. Installation was painless. I've owned four Echo audio interfaces since 1998 (Darla, Indigo, IndigoIO) and they have always had great driver support and great sound.

    great buy

    By tinman-js-nO

Comments about Echo AudioFire12 12-Channel FireWire Audio Interface:

since this is the first review written i don't know how this thing already has 5 stars, but here's my two cents. basically, it's a great deal for the price. 12 TRS ins/outs, MIDI, wordclock. i use it as my main interface and record all 12 inputs at once with no problem. now that ECHO has their act together with the updated drivers i would have no issues recommending this to anyone. my only complaint is that there's no digital in or out.
