I was hoping this would be a good, low-cost alternative to the classic SM57 for recording drums.
I was impressed by the quality feel of this mic, which seems solid, and would probably handle some abuse. Unfortunately, the sound DOES NOT compete wth a 57. The Cobalt 4 sounds tinny in comparison, and not in a pleasant way. Could be good for other things, but it is not a mic I would use for close-micing drums.

Not too shabby

By OqH2LdNPf

Comments about Electro-Voice EV Cobalt 4 Mic:

The buy one get one deal with these was the main thing that sold me on this. I was too cheap to get a 57, and I needed two mics for miking both mine and my other guitarist's cab. They're nice and durable, but they color my tone a bit too much for my taste, more treble than I'd prefer. If you're looking for just recording your ideas, it's perfect. If you're looking for pristine, accurate sound reproduction, I'd go with something more high-end. However for the price, they can't be beat.

Comments about Electro-Voice EV Cobalt 4 Mic:

I got these mics so I didn't have to use PHANTOM power(for overheads) they really worked very nicely. They are a little heavy, they slipped out a couple of times. So watch your heads!! Great for instrument miking also. Picks up everything for guitar(acoustic) I haven't use them for amp miking yet. So far, every purpose that I used them for, they have never let me down!! That's going on four years now.

Comments about Electro-Voice EV Cobalt 4 Mic:

The hatred for these mics on some forums is so odd to me. First off, the SM57 is a versatile workhorse. However, just like Wayne Gretzky or Michael Jordan have proved, we tend to ignore other great athletes sometimes when we focus on just one player that we think is amazing. So the EV Cobalt 4 is fantastic for guitar amps and open back cabs (ANYONE who says otherwise is one of those who never use anything BUT one mic all the time on their cabs, which is fine). It's just like ANY other microphone where you have to place it in the sweet spot for that amp/cab/mic combination.

If you read the frequency response, you can also see how complimentary this mic will be on toms compared to other microphones that advertise as being drum or tom mics. VERY similar frequency responses. It has even been said here that it is a secret weapon on toms.

This is great for hand drums as well (better than a 57 for hand drums IMO).

Vocals? Yes, but background. The frequency response on this microphone (since it doesn't have that same honk around 1-2k as a 57 or 58, this mic is actually a fantastic microphone for background vocals live and in studio. This is great because usually you want that frequency bumped for the lead vocals due to the Fletcher Munson curve as it helps them feel in front of the mix. So since this is a little brighter dynamic and doesn't have that same honk in the 1-2k range, background vocals sit in the mix with little effort.

Is this the same as my 350 SM7b or my 600 condenser? No. But it MORE than has its place ESPECIALLY at 18 a pop (which is practically giving it away). At 60 a pop it is better than any Nady, Behringer, Cad, or some of the low line Audio Technica's on the market. EV microphones are severely underrated, and the Co4 is no exception. Trust me, snag a pair while you can, even if you want dynamic ride and hi-hat mics. Better yet, how can you beat a pair of these as a more than solid backup that sometimes you may even want to grab first!

Comments about Electro-Voice EV Cobalt 4 Mic:

Okay, these are cheap mics. VERY cheap mics. And i bought them for that reason, because, why not. The way they're described on here in the reviews is pretty acurate. They are bright, and seem to color source material a pretty lot. *Most source material. I tried them on pretty much everything and was not impressed. Anything i tried these mics on a 57 would destroy them, and im not even much of a 57 guy personally. BUT- there is a hidden use for these mics that stands out imho. TOMS. I couldent get a tom sound i was impressed with one day with the mics i ususlly use(what they are does not matter, but you can assume the standard). so i tried these bad boys out. Great. AWESOME. Its like they're pre eq'ed for the job. If you're looking for another option to have for toms, try these out. They may just come in handy. Ev dynamics seem to like toms for some reason lol. And it looks like there might be an output transformer in these bad boys, could be a good or bad thing but kinda cool for the scratch regaurdless.

Comments about Electro-Voice EV Cobalt 4 Mic:

Picked this up on sale and was a little skeptical. I have a sm57 already so I thought this might be an adequate backup for that mic. I do mainly home studio and demo recording. I was struck right away with the weight of the mic which feels very solid and durable. This is a pro and a con as I think these are built to last but can be challenging to get to stay in position due to the weight. I tested this vs my Shure sm57 and I noticed the Co4 is brighter. This isn't necessarily a bad thing just something to be aware of. I was recording my laney cub cab both close mic'd to the speaker cone and rear mic'D since it is open backed. The Co4 performed well especially in rear mic'D position. I did notice more mic stand noise was transmitted to the Co4 when moving the stand around so logically the same would happen in a live setting. All in all this is a good mic and a fantastic value if you can catch it on sale. Buy two
