OVERVIEW

Industry-leading performance that won't break the bank.

With best-in-class performance across every detail, Electro-Voice raises the bar with its ZLX-15P powered loudspeaker. Its rugged enclosure is engineered to exacting standards, delivering exceptional pro-grade audio, even without a subwoofer. With modern styling the ZLX-15P is perfect either as mains or monitors, and represents a new standard for musicians, DJs, or anyone looking for more power and portability.

The heartbeat of this compact system is a lightweight and efficient Class-D amplifier, powering a 15-in. woofer and 1.5-in. titanium compression driver with 1000W for an impressive 127dB SPL with deep low-end response and crisp, clear highs. Compared to its smaller sibling, this 15-in. is better suited for larger spaces and applications calling for more bass output, such as DJing or live instrument reinforcement. Pound-for-pound you’ll be hard pressed to find a harder working speaker in the business, and the ZLX-15P’s robust build means it’s ready to be put through its paces.

Three unique location sound modes optimize the ZLX-15P for any live sound application. Run it up a stand and use the pole setting to gain back the low end you lose from elevating it off the ground. Place it wedge-style on the floor and use the monitor setting to control low end from muddying your stage sound. Or mount it to a wall and use the bracket setting to prevent excess bass buildup from overtaking your mix.

EV puts you even more in control with preset EQ curves that let you effortlessly dial in the perfect sound for your club or venue. Get the people on their feet by sweetening your audio with a smiley-face club EQ curve (excited bass and treble). Or optimize your speakers for music with the neutral live preset, or customize for book readings and live speaking events with the speech preset.

FEATURES
  • LCD display and unique single-knob DSP control with presets
  • Input level meters and independent amplifier control
  • EV-engineered components matched with a custom-built 1000-W Class-D amplifier

I've done sound reinforcement, live events and DJed for 35 years. I've used Altec, JBL, EV and TOA.
Most recently I've used EONs which I've really liked but they are looking very beat up and I've never liked the way they pack in a truck (too oddly shaped). That is what drew me to the ZLX speakers - they look very sleek. Then I listened to them at my local Performance Audio. They sounded great - maybe a little too heavy/colored on the low end.
I've now used them for a live vocal concert and they did great.
Here is some technical assessment.
While the specs tell the SPL output (127dB), they don't list the power consumption.
Using my Kill-A-Watt power meter, I measured 18 watts idle as compared to about 23 watts on my EONs.
I put pink noise in the ZLX15P until the LIMIT showed up on the LCD (which is a very nice feature). The power consumption was about 55 watts. I don't have an SPL meter any more so I don't know the output power but it was fairly loud.
Increasing the volume until I could hear distortion raised the input power to about 110Watts.
I then ran a single tone generator from 20Hz to 16kHz and adjusted the volume until the "limit" indicator came on. The input power ranged from 70 watts to 55 watt, low Hz to high Hz respectively.
My conclusion is that the amplifier only runs about 30 watts before it clips. (assuming HE switching class amplifier)
I think they should have increased that a few dB. They have a spec'd max output of 127dB. I'm not so sure it's capable of that due to the wimpy amplifier.
I noticed that the ZLX-15 passives are rated at 126dB with 250W input. That doesn't make sense. EV is playing marketing numbers.
**** This is why I've rated the ZLX-15P 4/5 stars. ****

The cabinet is sturdy and somewhat durable. However, I don't think it will be near as durable as the EONs because the grill is very large, covering the whole front and wrapping around the front sides. This means it is vulnerable to dings on the front edges.
The cabinet is a heavy duty plastic which is great but the edges have a tight radius which feel like they will get dinged.
I also bought the gig bags. They should help on dings.
I would recommend them but beware they are not high output.

Not a happy camper, had both speakers replaced

I've owned two of these, and both within 1 year blew out one channel. The speakers were replaced under warranty, but with another rebuilt speaker. Very disappointd

    Comments about Electro-Voice ZLX-15P 15" 2-Way Powered Loudspeaker:

I was originally looking to purchase the ELX-115p after much debate and really comparing and doing my homework decided to go with the ZLX-15p instead drivers are pretty much toe to toe and biggest difference is plastic cabinet to the wood cabinet on elx. I listened to both and they sound alike.
I love the bass response on ZLX and they sound great and clear i tested them for about an hour really pushing them and they performed great. I recommend this to anyone with looking for a great speaker and to top it off they are loud and clear! I will have a video posted on youtube under blue note entertainment ZLX with a video review

      Comments about Electro-Voice ZLX-15P 15" 2-Way Powered Loudspeaker:

In an earlier review I stated that these were not as loud as I hoped. I think I had unrealistic expectations of two powered speakers in this price range to provide plenty of volume AND bass for medium events to semi large events. I recently added a single subwoofer, set the crossover at 100hz on the ZLX-15P's, and with the sub handling the lows, I've had enough volume and sound in every situation I have been in so far. The sub (Cerwin Vega CVA118) seems to keep up with two ZLX-15P's, the combo of the EV's and Cerwin Vega really sounds nice. Since I added teh sub, I have had plenty of volume and bass for the small to medium sized events I've done. One huge plus with these speakers is the carrying options, the placement of the thee handles really makes them easy to carry and set up.

DJ'd a wedding last night with about 200 people, these speakers rocked the house! With ZLX 15's ---- sub woofers are not needed if you don't have the budget, lots of boom boom boom. In the past I have run Mackie 450's (With Subs), QSC K-10's & the Bose L1 model 2, these speakers give all three of those brands a run for the money!!

Bought one of these to replace a bad JBL EON. The difference is very noticeable. In our Live Setting we still have one of the JBL's paired with the EV. The sound coming from the EV is so much crisper. Plus the digital display makes setup quick and tweaking setting very quick and easy. Can't wait to buy another to replace the JBL

            Comments about Electro-Voice ZLX-15P 15" 2-Way Powered Loudspeaker:

First I must say this is the first powered PA speaker I have ever used. I'm using it for band rehearsel. After blasting our ears out with amps and acoustic drums I got some edrums and now bring everything into the board and out to this one speaker for rehearsal purposes. Does it thump like our yorkvilles subs? Nope, but its plenty loud enough (or quiet enough!) for what we are asking it to do. At first I fooled by how much volume this can put out. While just playing some recorded music it didn't seem that loud but I noticed I was yelling into peoples ears the way you do at a live music show so they could hear me. I really didn't have it turned up much but the sound is so clear you get fooled into thinking its not loud. I believe our perception of a loud band has alot to do with the sound systems are so awful alot of the time that we think loud should HURT. About the settings: the 'music' setting sounds very good, the 'club' setting sounds like mush to me, the 'live' setting really is for when you crank it up, 'speech' is a great idea, it cleans up the low end like you would do for vocals from a mixing board, this lets someone that needs to use this for speaking sound reinforcement sound nice and clear with just a mic into one of the inputs. The position settings (pole, floor, bracket) mostly add or reduce low end. 'Pole' has the most low end, 'floor' turns it into a vocal monitor so a bunch of low end isn't blasted at the singer, 'bracket' seems to sit somewhere inbetween.

All in all I'm pretty impressed, how does it compare to the EV's upper end stuff or QSC, RCF, JBL, ect. I really don't know, but for what I'm asking it to do it works very well. In fact I would say a couple of them would be fine as mains, add a sub and they would be very good for most small to mid room setups.

              Comments about Electro-Voice ZLX-15P 15" 2-Way Powered Loudspeaker:

First off these are great sounding speakers, especially their clarity, but they have their limitations, mostly in their volume output. Rated at 1,000 watts and 127 dB max SPL I was expecting a monstrous sound, I stepped up from Harbinger APS15's rated at 200 watts, and these don't sound all that louder (if any) than the Harbingers. Because of my volume expectation I had to knock them a star. Where these babies shine is in their clarity, separation of frequencies, portability (weight), looks and of course they're EV. Sound wise they almost have the clarity of less expensive studio monitors, like KRK Rokits, which to me for a PA is exceptional. With each one at the corner of the stage at 90 degrees, all the frequencies are present (in bigger rooms you'll want a sub if you want some thump, for smaller rooms a sub probably isn't necessary) and phasing seems good when placed at 90 degrees. They are very good looking professional speakers. They are super easy to use and way lighter than they look (just over 30 pounds!). If you want exceptional sound without breaking your back, and don't need to blow people away with volume, these are a good choice. I think these are better suited for live band use, my acoustic guitar and vocals never sounded so good, and they are good for typical acoustic volumes. As for a DJ set up or really loud live music, you may find yourself wanting more volume before these start clipping, although hey have a lot more head room if you cut off the lows at 100 Hz. If I were to do it over, I might save a little bit and go for the ZLX12's so I could buy a cheap sub for more bass, and volume.

              Comments about Electro-Voice ZLX-15P 15" 2-Way Powered Loudspeaker:

I play in an Irish band and use these to reinforce sound with acoustic instruments. I upgraded from an old set of Behringer Eurolive B215A powered speakers. These are definitely lighter when carrying around. I did a bit of a sound test, and I found the clarity through the mids to be much better on the Ev speakers. Plenty of bass. My only wish is that they would include a mid range control on the DSP. I think that would have been pretty easy to do.
My only other comment is that they seem to scuff up or atract dirt pretty easily. I have only done one gig and they already look used.
I thought hard about getting the new JBL EON615 speakers, which have bluetooth remote programming feature, but JBL is late in coming out with the app, so I found no reviews on it, and any review about the speaker itself was less favorable. What I did find was literally dozens of good reviews on the Ev speakers, so I figured better safe than sorry and bought the Ev.

                Comments about Electro-Voice ZLX-15P 15" 2-Way Powered Loudspeaker:

I have the ZLX 15s (and the ZLX 12s, and the ZXA1 Subs). I use the subs and the 12s for small to medium venues, the subs and 15s for medium to large venues, or all 6 for larger or outdoor venues. These EVs are just amazing sounding. For the price, they definately give QSC and JBL a run for the money.

The 15s by themselves are good enough without subs for most things (but I like lots of bass and you just cant beat a sub, even if its only the amazing 12" inside of the ZXA1)

I like the bottom and side handle for lifting onto poles / stands. They are lightweight which is good for may back.

                They look and sound awesome.

I have read that they are wired so they don't fully utilize the 1000 watt amp they come with. So they are a little (not by much) softer than their QSC/JBL/Mackie competitors, but I think they sound better (and isn't that what counts?) That is probably better anyway so you won't ever blow them....

The digital EQ settings on the back are easy, nice, and work well.

I think the bottom line is that if you are looking for a powered speaker in this price range, EV ZLX is the best deal you will find.

These speakers are great for use as mains in small to medium venues, or as monitors in large venues. If you are setting up for a larger venue then keep in mind that these cabinets do not stack due to their shape. There is no signal drop when using 1/4" inputs as opposed to the XLR so you can run off your aux sends with no problems. The onboard DSP is great to help to match the speakers to any that you may have from a different manufacturer on the same send. I have been using these nearly every weekend for about 18 months with no problems whatsoever.
