Electro-Voice

Electro-Voice's popular, compact PA speaker is now amped.

The Electro-Voice ZXA1-90 is a compact, amplified loudspeaker system, which is designed for portable sound reinforcement applications that require maximum portability.

The EV ZXA1-90 audio speaker uses the EV8L, a high output, low distortion, 203mm (8") woofer. The woofer is paired with the DH2005, a titanium diaphragm 1" exit true compression driver. The compression driver is coupled to a rotatable 90° x 50° waveguide for smooth response to 20kHz and excellent pattern control.

The ZXA1-90 loudspeaker is powered by an integrated 800W, 2-channel amplifier module. The amplifier has XLR microphone and line level inputs, as well as an XLR line level output for daisy chaining several amplified speakers or a subwoofer. The biamplified design features steep crossover slopes and woofer excursion protection for maximum output and reliability. A switchable high pass filter allows for use with a subwoofer.

The Electro-Voice ZXA1-90 injection molded enclosure is made from high impact polystyrene for durability and light weight. The handle pocket and pole mount make the ZXA1-90 ideal for many portable applications. The ZXA1-90 speaker enclosure also features a built-in monitor angle for floor monitor applications. The bottom of the Electro-Voice ZXA1-90 features four #8-32 suspension points for permanent installation.

First I'll say that I am not a "gear snob" and didn't A/B test things to death. I just wanted a small, lightweight powered speaker for solo acoustic bar gigs. I was hoping to get away with just one speaker. I have a Bose L1 rig that I use for larger venues and with my 4 piece band (1 L1 with 2 B1 subs for 3 vox and a sax). I don't play super loud, but I play bars not coffee houses so you have to get well above the din. I tried a Roland AC-60 but after 10 minutes I knew that was NOT going to cut it in a bar. It sounded pretty but no real balls without clipping. I searched on-line and found the ZXA1 but few good reviews that fit my situation but it looke promising. I bought one and just got back from my first gig. I was flat out stunned how well it worked. I had a second powered speaker just in case but after the first set I just ran the one ZXA1 off an Alesis mixer. Acoustic guitar and Shure beta 58 straight into the mixer. Had plenty of power to spare and people really enjoyed the tone and clarity - ZERO distortion and it was uncomfortably loud at time.I did a few tunes with an electric guitar through a Digitech amp modeler/pedal and that was great as well. People loved the tone and was as loud as needed.End of the night the manager said the other guys should take a clue from me - most of them have too much gear and it does not sound nearly as good. One ZXA1 is going to handle 80% of my bar gigs. I also tried a Fishman solo amp. The Fishman did sound more "natural" but the ZXA1 was far more "musical" whatever that means and it certainly responded much better to agressive slashing which I like to do on acoustic (not all the time...) Also the ZXA1 is much better looking than the Soloamp and you can control it remotely from the mixer. I'm very happy with the purchase.

While the sound was clear, the bass response was non existent. They are unusable without a sub, and I would even say they are not really full range speakers. I tried them at two events that K8's would have blown away and I might as well have had a boom box. I returned them and I await the arrival of some new K8's.

Comments about Electro-Voice ZXA1-90 Powered PA Speaker:

I've been frustrated with keyboard sound for some time, was unsatisfied with the limitations of near field monitors, and was very interested from some comments on piano world, as I have been looking for something that would also support small group choral singing. I am amazed at the big grand sound of just one ZXA-1 90 with my Casio Privia PX-150. I am so pleased to have a full grand sound in soft passages, where undersized speakers lose bass response. I couldn't be more pleased. I'm no longer motivated to investigate software pianos trying to get a satisfying sound.

I have 4 zxa1 plus 2 zxa1 subs. Often use them w/o the subs with the full range button on. I use a high quality mixer and get extremely good sound with amazing bottom. Some of these reviewers are doing something wrong. This is one of four PA systems I own. They rock if used properly.

Comments about Electro-Voice ZXA1-90 Powered PA Speaker:

Great little monitor speaker for an acoustic trio. The sound is clean and you can hear every note, so it helps you to keep in tune and connected with the sound you are producing. It's really light and small, so easy to transport. We play at places with questionable PAs, usually loud and muddy sound, so bringing our own monitor gives us the sound we need to play well. We have separate bass amp for the bass player, so not worried about low frequency extension on stage, and we use the 100Hz low-pass filter just to keep the sound clean and avoid overloading the amp. We plan to buy a second one to give us more flexibility and a little more output.

Comments about Electro-Voice ZXA1-90 Powered PA Speaker:

The addition of a monitor angle on the ZxA1 was a big feature for me - and something competitors did not have. The output with the 100Hz filter engaged is very strong for its size, obviously running them full range they will limit quicker. Durability has been excellent over time even with abusive rental business. I have run this box in very hot weather with no issues. The response is extremely clean especially in the vocal range. As a K12 owner, I do not mind having these on monitor duty (which K8's could not do) or side-fill/delay duty. The 90x40 disperson covers most uses adequately and "throw distance" is excellent. I would say the ZxA1 shines most as a vocal monitor - and it does that exceptionally well even with larger FOH systems.

Comments about Electro-Voice ZXA1-90 Powered PA Speaker:

I originally got this to run my keyboard through. My 3 piece Americana/folk group uses a Bose L1 for most of our gigs, although we started using a smaller(!) setup for very tight spaces, such as wine bars. That's when I started using this as my personal PA. As I started doing more solo gigs, I found it perfect.

As a woman of limited strength, I didn't want to be lugging a passive speaker & amps. The ZXA1-90 is lightweight and still gives me the power & clarity I need when using my guitar and/or keys. I run my guitar through a Roland AC60, into a small Behringer mixer and out to the EV. I'm doing this with one speaker and it is more than sufficient. I even did an outdoor Farmer's Market gig and got a lot of compliments on the sound.

It is a bit pricey, but I will eventually get a second one for larger venues. The very big venues we play provide their own PAs anyway, so between this and our Bose system, we're good to go.

I'd definitely recommend this to acoustic type setups. If I were adding a bass player, I would get the bass module.

Just finished the St. Patrick's Day week with a pair of these at 2 outdoor tent venues and 1 indoor pub. These are light to carry, perfect sounding, versatile in every venue, and loud enough to be heard over 500 drunks.

Comments about Electro-Voice ZXA1-90 Powered PA Speaker:

Definitely has a high-mid presence that is nice for live vocals and guitar, but needs to be eq'd out for recorded music. This hump in the upper mid works well as one moves back away from the speaker, because the throw of this speaker is so short that there is a huge change in perceived response and volume going from five to twenty feet. As a closely positioned floor monitor, we loved this speaker. These got fatiguing to the ear when they were pushed with recorded music, and they were not that loud before this happend(all levels properly set). Missing musical detail the harder they were pushed (just up to an occasional blink of the yellow limiter led)so backing a quater way down and leaving proper headroom, they weren't very loud, but were very musical. Tried it with a good sub, the tiny blue pushbutton and associated high pass filter was perfect. Great for a small coffee house, small bar or as a monitor wedge. Easily carry one in each hand. Nice and light.

Well, I've used these speakers extensively and I love them. They deliver sparkling highs, great fidelity and yes, plenty of bottom, which really surprised me- all that low end from an 8" woofer! The venues that I work however, pair these speakers with high - end Allen & Heath mixing boards and that might make a big difference. If you have a cheap mixer, it's going to be difficult to get a good sound no matter what speakers you use but the other way around, if you have a really good mixer, you'll be OK with most speakers. They're light, loud and sturdy and I'm going to buy a pair and sell my big PA speakers. Love 'em.BP
