Guitar pro 5 is excellent tab software. Not only can you write your own tabs with multiple tracks, including percussion, but it also comes with a large tab database of around 20-25 thousand songs.
I have been looking for a program like this for 10+ years. This is amazing. I have been playing metal for 15 years and don't know how I got by without it. Even someone with a very basic understanding of notation (like myself) will have no problem understanding how to use this. You learn so much the second you start using it. I am completely amazed at how great this is. Another huge benefit is you get to hear what you're writing as you write it, that way you know you are writing your songs correctly. And you can download almost any music for guitar pro off the web. Absolutely amazing!
I downloaded the demo to see how I liked it and within about 30 minutes, I purchased the full version. This software has been invaluable for my band because it allows us to quickly and easily tab out the songs so that we all have copies of exactly what we should be playing. There are so many features, but I think the ability to hear what you're tabbing is incredible. I think I've got an average understanding of musical notation, but it's so much easier to hear what you're writing as you go, especially when you're trying to commit a song to paper that has only existed in your mind. It allows you to get strumming patterns correct, note lengths correct, etc. The higher quality samples that can replace the midi instruments actually sounds pretty good.I gave it a .5 ding in the quality rating because of one bug that I get now and again. After awhile of using the program, I'll sometimes get an error when I go to listen to what I have so far. The score plays fine and the program seems to run fine except for the popup telling me that the program has encountered an error. Strange!Overall, I would totally recommend this software to anyone!
I won my copy of Guitar Pro 5 in a drawing, but even at full price it is a great value. The midi play back is great for learning difficult licks. With standard and TAB notations learning note names and rhythms are easy. There are thousands of free Guitar Pro files of your favorite songs on the web. Printouts of sheet music are very professional. Guitar Pro 5 is also fantastic for creating and documenting your own compositions. It's very easy to use - I haven't ever had to look at the instructions! I highly recommend this software!
I downloaded the demo for GP5.... 3 days later I purchased the real thing through Musician's Friend. It's simply unbelieveable. It blew me away in every way. Very easy to use and user friendly. I love to read tab and hear it played out at the same time. Highly reccomended.
When you compare this program installed on a PC to a Mac. it's as though they are two completely different programs. The PC version works fine and is well worth the money. It seems as though the company did not put much effort into the Mac version. The toolbar is so sparse that it almost looks bare. There are bugs galore as the program is forever crashing. Power Tab Editor is better for the Mac and it's free! It's a shame because I use my Mac for most of my music production. So, in summary: If you are going to use it on a PC, it's a decent program that is worth what it costs. If you are going to use it on a Mac, mark my words, you are going to be VERY disappointed.
I recently bought this after using a PowerTab editor. Before using this, I didnt understand notation, time signature, anything like that...and Ive been shredding on guitar for 10+ years. Having this one week, Ive already tabbed out a dozen or so songs of our band's with correct EVERYTHING. I didnt even think it was possible. Another thing I like about it is the fretboard trainer and suggested fingering feature. They are great for when Im writing a solo or lead behind a riff, and dont have a guitar. The fretboard trainer shows you scales, the notes as they are played and all sorts of cool features. The alternate fingering feature this thing has is great for those hard Opeth licks or any other hard fingerings, and it shows you an easier fingering for people that have a hard time getting to those frets. Also, another great thing about this is the RSE Realistic Sound Engine, which makes the score into a realistic sounding score. Its cool to use, but not necessary for a good tab, if your midi is up to date. Overall, this is a PRICELESS product for anyone who plays a stringed instrument. Before I knew anything about it, the price shocked me a little for a tablature prog.....but after trying it and buying it, I would have easily given up $$ without question! I use this everyday!
