Comments about Finale PrintMusic 2011 Retail:
I bought this instead of springing for the full version - big mistake. You can't hide empty staves, and since I primarily write musical theater/choral arrangements this was debilitating. I even went into the xml code to fix the issue but the code itself is full of shortcuts rendering the elimination of extra staves impossible. I was able to download the full version of FInale 2012 at a discount since this product was a terrible fit. I don't recommend this at all if you write music professionally. Big waste of money and time.
Comments about Finale PrintMusic 2011 Retail:
Mine is the 2007 version that I am using. I can use it, but it is not an easy fight. I was figuring that it work along the lines of Microsoft Word or some other common program, but that was a wrong assumption on my part. In the last 5 yrs, I finally figured out how to use the basic writing program and was able to write out a composition without having to resort to shutting it off in frustration. The basic set up is fine - clefs, meter, etc, but sometimes it misses a rhythm or slides off beat a bit. That's where the problem comes in big time. Goin back in and editing is a nightmare. I finally had to print a hard copy and go in with "White Out" and do my editing that way. Adding lyrics went OK -once I figured it out. Overall, a nice try, but not the best writing program by a long shot. Look around for something better/cheaper/better value.
Features are nice, but acccessing them can be difficult, sometimes impossible. Referencing hte manual and/or the online help can in places be useless. Editing features are complicated. I figured some out by just guessing.
Qulaity seems fair, but quality is not an issue here. It is a well featured program and it holds up well, since my version is the 2007 version. The usse here is bad engineering and layout of the program.
SInce it is not exactly user friendly, its value stinks to be short ad succinct.
Comments about Finale PrintMusic 2011 Retail:
This is a terrible program. I've used free online music notation programs that are better. I've been screwing around all afternoon and have written 4 measures. It is so non-intuitive I've had to look up every single action. The reference book that comes with it is a joke and the online help is even worse. Want to change a note's duration? Pain in the rear. Want to move it? Pain in the buttocks. Want to even select the stupid note? I don't even know how. Sometimes it selects, sometimes it doesn't. This is the third time I've tried to get into this program and it will be the last. If this weren't a gift from my wife I'd return it. Don't waste your time.
Comments about Finale PrintMusic 2011 Retail:
Try MusicTime they are about comparable for simplicity.
I had high hopes for this program as the advertising video's make it seem pretty easy to use. It is easy to set up your scores, instruments etc. The instument sounds are marginal however. It does not play back acurately even when notes are manually entered. It was very difficult for me to get it to recognize my synthesizer. It took many emails to customer support to get it operational. They were fairly good at getting back to me which was nice but it often took many emails to remedy the issues.
The true downfall of this program is, once you get your midi connection going and play your compositions live, it can't even remotely play back or transcribe them with even a hint of accuracy. Print Music could learn a lot from my old edition of MusicTime which didn't always transcribe accurately but the sounds were dead on which made manual fixes easy.
The scanning in of scores is completely useless. Again, I had high hopes for this feature.
It has never crashed or failed to save anything.
I'm not sure what application this program would be good for. Perhaps printing out of music, lyrics that you've manually entered for accuracy, but certainly not for playback features.
Comments about Finale PrintMusic 2011 Retail:
My experience with Finale Print Music 2011 has been really enjoyable. It made writing music so much easier than having to write it all out by hand. The glitches were hardly noticable when compared to the beauty of the product over all. I would recommend this product to anyone as it is extremely easy to learn to use.
Finale comes with a wide range of instruments and formats to select from and is very easy to use. I love the fact that it plays what you wrote.
However, there are a few glitches when it plays back your music. Sometimes (for me) it held notes longer than they were written or messed up the rythym in one measure.
Comments about Finale PrintMusic 2011 Retail:
My experience with Finale products has not been positive. I bought an upgrade last year and can neither convert old compositions to new format nor convert new to old without fatal errors and crashes. No matter what your problem, Finale has a solution for another $100+. Problem is, their solution requires another solution.
