OVERVIEW

18x8 audio interface with Thunderbolt connectivity.

Are you up to Thunderbolt speed? The Focusrite Clarett Series audio interfaces can deliver. With up to 119 dB dynamic range, superbly low noise, precision 24/192 conversion and eight specially-designed mic preamps with a unique analogue “Air” effect, Clarett 4Pre simply sounds great, easily out-performing other interfaces in its class and beyond. Meanwhile, its astonishing 1.38ms round-trip latency* simplifies your workflow and lets you use your favourite plug-ins in real time.

Remote control from iPhone or iPad
Download the free Focusrite iOS Control app and adjust cue mixes created with the Focusrite Control desktop app remotely from an iPad, iPhone or iPod touch.

Four New Clarett Mic Pres with extra ‘Air’
The mic pres have been designed especially for the Clarett range, with plenty of gain, yet low noise and distortion. In addition, they include a special “Air” feature that switches in an analogue model of the classic transformer-based Focusrite ISA mic pre. The Instrument inputs also feature extra headroom to handle the loudest pickup.

Precision Digital Conversion
Clarett features Focusrite’s class-leading 24/192 conversion: with up to 119dB dynamic range, Clarett offers the cleanest way yet to get music in and out of your DAW.

Easy Access
All four mic/line/instrument inputs are on the front panel for instant, easy access, and Clarett 4Pre’s compact, rugged form factor makes it ideal for use on the road as well as in the studio.

Simplifying the way you work
Clarett’s ultra-low round-trip latency completely transforms your workflow. If you’re used to having to build two different mixes – one using input monitoring to overdub, the other using the DAW for playback – the good news is that now, one is enough. Build your mix on the DAW and use it whether you’re overdubbing (monitoring the input you’re recording with the new Focusrite Control software mixer) or playing back, with all your plugins in place, all the time. Use your favourite plugins while recording too – whether it’s reverb on a vocal, a guitar amp simulator, or even virtual instruments live on stage.

Intuitive, Easy to Use Software Mixer and Sweet Sounding Plug-ins
Focusrite Control is a brand new software mixer designed for easy configuration of monitoring and routing setups. Simple and intuitive to use, Focusrite Control offers a traditional mixer workflow and allows immediate access to internal hardware functions. Also included is a sweet sounding plug-in collection comprising Softube's world-class Time and Tone Bundle, with TSAR-1R Reverb, Tube Delay and Saturation Knob. This is complemented by the Red 2 & Red 3 AAX, AU & VST Plug-in Suite, which accurately models Focusrite's classic Red range equalizer and compressor hardware.

‘Gain Haloes’ help keep levels in check
Each of the four front panel inputs includes Focusrite’s signature “Gain Halo” – an illuminated ring around the gain control that lights up green when there’s signal and red when it’s too high. There’s a main monitor knob plus dual high-power headphone outputs with their own volume controls.

Plenty of ins and outs
Clarett 4Pre offers a full 18 audio inputs and eight outputs, including four front-panel multi-function inputs, four independent line inputs and line outputs, stereo S/PDIF I/O and dual headphone outputs. There are also eight channels of ADAT-format digital input – ideal for adding eight channels of digital mic pre.

Comments about Focusrite Clarett 4Pre Thunderbolt Audio Interface:

Had an issue with my 2011 Mac with ticks/pops upon first setting the unit up but a quick call to Focusrite, and an email with a software update from their techs got things smooth sailing again. Have only used it for about 2-3 hours so far (at 96hz) but tracks sound really good. Looking forward to putting some more time in and getting more familiar with everything.

Comments about Focusrite Clarett 4Pre Thunderbolt Audio Interface:

I bought the 4-channel Clarett to replace my aging Digi 003. The 003 works fine but I don't want to upgrade Pro Tools for it, and I was running into freeze-ups using OS X Capitan with an old version of Pro Tools. I am running the Clarett to a 2014 Mac Pro with 12 cores and 16 gigs of memory (the one that looks like a black cylinder). It's a monster desktop machine. The buyer needs to get their own Thunderbolt cable, by the way. The unit does not come with one.

The Clarett is easy to set up--after installing the Focusrite Control app---really just plug and play. I like the 'Air' function on the pre-amps that seems to lift and center sounds (I record acoustic guitar mostly). I found the Focusrite pre-amps not to have as much gain as I wanted, but it was easy to plug in external preamps (an SSL Alpha Channel and a couple Grace Design 101s). I wish the Clarett pre-amps could be defeated with a switch but some web digging revealed that the signal chain goes through them even when they are seen to zero volume. Ah, well, small thing.

I got dropouts when I set the input buffer to 96 samples (1 ms) but that's ridiculously low latency. I am using it now at 512 samples without issue. Recording at 88khz and 512 samples yields latency of 5.8 ms. Thunderbolt is really fast.

The Clarett can record many more than four channels. It has inputs for 4 XLR channels, 4 line inputs Balanced TRS), and ADAT and SPDIF connections. The digital connections need an external device of course, but I count 16 inputs channels in the config window.

The package of Softube plugins that came with it is a treat. I already had a couple I had paid real money for. TS1 reverb is especially nice.

One could want a lot more in their interface, and Universal Audio and other premium companies sell them for thousands. This unit is hundreds--a huge bargain in comparison.
