Focusrite

Premium 2 in, 4 out portable USB interface for Mac and Windows.

Taking its name from the original Focusrite console that embodied all the fundamental elements of the renowned Focusrite sound, Forte is a portable professional USB audio interface with two inputs and four outputs, housed in a compact, elegant and sturdy aluminum case.

Forte has been designed specifically to provide a compact, rugged and effective input path to your computer with the maximum possible audio quality for mic, line and instrument sources. In particular, Forte delivers class-leading dynamic range and noise floor – both highly significant in today’s world of an almost unlimited number of tracks making up a mix – and class-leading conversion performance, ensuring you get the very best quality sound at all times.

Featuring two of the latest design of Focusrite NetPre remote-controlled microphone preamplifiers, as used in Focusrite’s flagship RedNet range, Forte connects to both Mac and Windows computers via USB 2.0. It incorporates highest-quality precision 24-bit A-D and D-A converters operating at sample rates up to 192kHz, and the conversion stages have had maximum attention paid to both analogue and digital design to deliver the best possible performance.

Forte includes a color OLED (Organic LED) display to indicate mic, line in, line out and headphone levels, gain structure and other functionality. It features a single, large, smoothly-rotating control knob operated in conjunction with a series of touch-sensitive icons to access preamplifier and output functions – input, monitor, headphone, and control – plus the ability to control DAW functions and act as a remote control for your music software.

In addition to providing the highest quality input preamps and signal path, particular attention has been paid to ergonomic design. A breakout cable with locking connector is used for microphone (XLR) and line/instrument (TRS) inputs, but balanced line and independent headphone outputs are provided on the unit itself, so the breakout cable is not required for playback-only applications. In addition, the fact that the mic and line-level inputs on the breakout cable are separate means that you can keep your inputs connected all the time without having to re-patch when you go from one to the other.

The elegant aluminum case includes non-slip strips on the base to ensure that it is always stable during operation. An external power supply is included with the unit, but this is only necessary if Phantom Power operation is required: otherwise Forte operates solely on bus power.

Included with the unit is Forte Control software application, which allows the configuration of low-latency monitoring, mic pre level adjustment and other features. Also in the box is the classic Focusrite Midnight plugin suite, accurately modeling the classic ISA110 EQ and ISA130 compressor.

Comments about Focusrite Forte USB Audio Interface:

The forte is a great sounding interface and it is very easy to use. I like the fact the is comes with 4 inputs although you can only record 2 at a time. By having 4 inputs I don't have to disconnect my mic and piano every time I want to use one or the other. Daw control is a great feature especially if you don't have a control surface. I primarily use my forte with a MacBook only and the drivers and software works flawlessly. I own both the forte and the duet 2 and I must tell that they both sound equally great in their own way. However, the forte has more features than the duet 2 like the daw control and the ability to connect 4 devices to its inputs. In order to have the 4 inputs on the duet you must purchase the breakout box.. As for sound quality I think that either of the two would do an excellent job when it comes to recording a high quality signal. However I think that as a portable solution buying both would be better because you would be getting the apogee preamps and the Rednet preamps. I personally own both the forte and the duet 2.

Comments about Focusrite Forte USB Audio Interface:

This is absolutely a five-star unit. The preamps are clean, quiet and loud. I bought the Forte to record classical guitar music and it excels. The classical guitar is not a loud instrument and for recording you need the pres to be quiet at pretty high gain levels and the Forte is.

Two gripes. The unit shipped with a defective USB cable. This caused all sorts of electronic noise like beeping and faint buzzing (possibly from the computer) to bleed through. It took me a couple of days to figure this out.

Second gripe is that the customer service was pretty slow getting back. Since I solved the problem on my own no big deal but as I write this it's been three days and no response.

I initially had another problem which turned out to be a faulty mic cable. When phantom power was on I was getting a very loud hissing. This was not the fault of the unit but it did take tech support four days to respond.

Fortunately everything else was flawless. I'm running Windows 7 and the software was a breeze to install and in minutes I was recording. Even the free software Midnight Suite downloaded no problem. I use Reaper and no problems at all with compatibility. I seriously was expecting some problems with install and getting up and running but there were none.
