OVERVIEW

Now get the power and precision of Focusrite recording on your iPad, Mac or PC.

iTrack Solo provides the best solution for recording your instruments and vocals using an iPad. Featuring a Focusrite microphone preamp and an input to record directly from electric guitars, iTrack Solo is the perfect companion for any singer-songwriter wanting to take their demos to the next level. Using the very best in digital audio technology, iTrack Solo will capture your sound with pristine quality. Simply plug in and press record. It couldn’t be simpler.

Since 1985, Focusrite has been a leading manufacturer in the professional audio field. Focusrite mic pres have played a key part in the recording of hundreds of hit records and they’re a top choice of leading artists, recording studios and engineers around the world. This experience has been used to great effect when designing the input section of iTrack Solo, which features a clean, low-noise, low-distortion preamp. iTrack Solo also provides phantom power for professional condenser microphones.

With a guitar input alongside the microphone input, you are free to record both vocals and your instrument simultaneously to separate tracks in your software*. You could even use both a microphone on your guitar and the guitar input at the same time to get a different sound.

Unique halo signal indicators, also found on Scarlett 2i2, let you know that you’ve got a good volume for recording. Red means that your signal is clipping, and that you should reduce the gain. The halo will momentarily turn amber as the signal returns to a healthy level, at which point the halo will turn green again.

A large monitor dial provides a tactile control for the volume of your speakers and headphones, whilst a high-quality headphone amp provides a clean yet loud signal to headphones connected to the front panel socket. The direct monitor switch routes audio directly from the inputs to both the headphone and speaker outputs. This allows you to hear the incoming signal with no latency, which can be distracting and affect your performance.

On the rear panel you will find phono outputs allowing you to connect iTrack Solo to a pair of powered speakers, or to your home Hi-Fi system. The speaker volume can then be controlled using the large dial on the front of iTrack Solo meaning everything you need is within reach.

iTrack Solo will also work with Mac and PC allowing you to record with your desktop or laptop. There is an included version of Ableton Live Lite and Focusrite’s Scarlett Plug-In Suite, which provides essential effects for recording – Reverb, Compression, Gate and EQ.

*Please note that at current, GarageBand for iOS will record two simultaneous inputs to a single stereo track, which cannot be separated using iPad. The two separate signals can be separated by transferring your session to a Mac. Other apps are available which allow recording to two separate tracks simultaneously.

I've only had the iTrack Solo a few days but have already been able to lay down a couple recordings. It is exceptionally simple to use with apps like garage band and sound quality is top notch. I love the gain indicator setup. It's fast and simple. It will work with the new iPad/iPhone5 style plug if you have an adapter.

Overall the design is good, it's easy to use, and sound quality is excellent. The important things are all here, so if you are in the market for a versatile, multi-platform, portable recording device, I would buy this one in an instant.

Laptop/Computer use is EASY and the USB connection is a perfect setup.

My ONLY negative is the proprietary cable on the back of this thing for iPad/iPhone use, but the cable is pretty rugged, so should last. I'll be buying an extension to keep any added stress of twisting/pulling off of it and since it is impossible to move your iPad around or have it at an angle with the short cable.

Improvements: Having your iPad laying flat isn't completely ideal. If Focusrite were to redesign this, my only improvements would be a groove in the top to have my iPad sit in at an angle, doubling as a stand, and a standard 30 pin cable plug on the side with a slightly longer cable to connect my device in this manner. If I break the cable at least then I could replace it immediately, until I could get a shielded manufaturer replacement. Garage Band doesn't have a nice vertical layout or I'd just recommend a standard dock on the top.

Despite all the positive reviews, this unit doesn't work with my iPad 3. I have an Apogee Jam that records perfectly so I don't know what the deal is with this but what happens is I can record a track in the Guitar Amps screen and play it back, it sounds great. But then when I navigate over to the multitrack view to play back that same track, the audio is horribly distorted and the iPad cursor movement moves erratically across the track view. Is it iOS 7 having an incompatibly issue with Focusrite? I think that 's probably the culprit so I'll be contacting Focusrite support. If you're considering buying this and have iOS7, you might want to check with them first.

Comments about Focusrite iTrack Solo Audio Interface for iPad, Mac and PC:

I found this device to be very easy to use. I set it up quickly, plugged in microphones, guitars and keyboards (not at the same time) and was recording very quickly. It makes making demos with clean, noise free takes easy. The circle of red or green around the volume knob on the channel makes it easy to find the best volume for recording. Great little tool!

Will only plug into older 30-pin ipads

Comments about Focusrite iTrack Solo Audio Interface for iPad, Mac and PC:

I can't comment on the quality of this product yet because I won't be able to try it until I buy an adapter for my ipad. Even though Apple hasn't made a product with a 30 pin plug in a year and a half, this still ships with the old 30 pin plug instead of the lightning adapter that's been in all ipads and iphones for that long. Hopefully it will work after I get an adapter, but I wanted ay potential future buyers to know about this before purchasing.

Comments about Focusrite iTrack Solo Audio Interface for iPad, Mac and PC:

First thing out of the box it seems a bit lightweight/ fragile. Haven't tested it's durability since I'll be treating it very kindly.

Although it's super marketed towards iPad use I use it with my MacBook Pro and it works absolute wonders.

Plug it in and Garageband recognizes it immediately, unlike with other pro mic-pres, where you have to shut off your computer every time you want to connect/disconnect the unit.

Only being able to use EITHER the xlr in OR the line in at one time is too bad, but it was clearly stated so it's not like Focusrite is tricking you. They have world reknowned mic-pres for good reason, sound is crystal clear. The LED noise meter isn't as nice as a traditional line one but it has 3 colors, green orange and red so it's still pretty helpful.

People have been complaining that there are problems using it with their iPad 3. All I can say to these people is that this product IS NOT ADVERTISED TO WORK WITH 3RD GENERATION IPAD. Read better next time, it'll save you time and money.

I got it as a SDD and for the reduced price I'm very happy for it, but the usual price point is a good deal too. You'll be really hard to find something of this sound quality at that price, though functionality is pretty low.

Comments about Focusrite iTrack Solo Audio Interface for iPad, Mac and PC:

The ITrack Solo is great. I was reluctant to buy it b/c of a few negative comments and ratings, but it does everything it said it would.

        A little bit about myself:
        1. I had NEVER recorded anything on my own using a MAC or PC, this is a completely new hobby for me. I've been a musician for 17 years, just never got around to recording.
        2. I had NEVER owned a MAC. Always a PC guy until recently.

So, I got a MAC BOOK PRO about a month ago and wanted to start experimenting w/ Garage Band....

IT COULD HAVE NOT BEEN EASIER! I cannot emphasize that point enough. You just plug it into your MAC BOOK, I PAD, etc, the MAC immediately recognizes it. You simply plug in your guitar/bass and you're ready to rock.
From the time I got the ITRACK out of the box until I started recording was literally 10-15 minutes ( and that was only b/c I read the entire owner's )

I've bought dozens of items from MF over the years, and this is the first item I've ever reviewed. After using it, and recalling all the negative comments on it, I was compelled to share my experience.

The comments stating the product doesn't work well w/ a MAC, or it doesn't work at all, are completely false. Until a month ago, my experience in recording and operating a MAC was ZERO. If I could figure it out, anyone could.

I've recorded 3-4 song already, using the ITRACK exclusively on every one. One song had 12 tracks on it and still no latency issues.

Not a single complaint on my end. It performed exactly how they said it would.

I've had this for about 6 months or so and it has definitely served its purpose. I think anyone who is looking to learn recording will be satisfied with this. It isn't the best, but it is very to understand and reasonably priced. Also, very small which is great for mobility. Even if I upgrade to a better interface, I will still keep this one because it is so easy to move around. I am a pc user btw, not mac

Comments about Focusrite iTrack Solo Audio Interface for iPad, Mac and PC:

It's been almost a month since my purchase and I have yet to use it. First one came and would not power up upon plugging in. Sent back to MF for a replacement, which came a week later. Seal on box was broken upon arrival, which automatically made me suspicious. And, not to my surprise, the second unit experienced the exact same problem.

Thinking maybe the whole thing was due to operator error, I contacted Focusrite directly. They confirmed the unit was defective, and have issued return authorization to them. Now I wait.

I have to say, the folks at MF and Focusrite have been very professional and friendly throughout the experience. However, it doesn't help going through two defective units and a month (and now what appears will be longer) of my time with nothing to show for the money I've spent.

My Creative Soundblaster X-Fi stopped recording well when I upgraded to Windows 7, so I was looking for an interface that gave high-quality digital results without breaking the bank. This little box did the trick. The sound is clear and accurate.

I can't comment on the included software, as I use the iTrack Solo with the software I am used to using (Mixcraft and SoundForge).
