OVERVIEW

18x8 USB 2.0 audio interface with four Focusrite preamps.

With four award-winning Focusrite preamps, the 18i8 is designed for producers and recording artist that demand a significant number of inputs to track multiple sources at the same time. The 18i8 boasts 18 separate inputs and 8 independent outputs, all housed in a rugged aluminum exterior with input controls and signal halos to keep incoming signals honest.

Focusrite: 30 years of all-round audio excellence
Focusrite was founded by Rupert Neve in 1985 to create the highest quality mic preamps for Sir George Martin’s AIR Studios. Those classic, sought-after designs have informed all Focusrite mic pre designs created over the past 30 years. The mic pres included in Scarlett interfaces were designed specifically for the purpose, combining the best of our heritage design experience with the latest components and technologies for the most transparent, effective path in and out of your computer. Alongside the preamps at the heart of Scarlett 18i8 is Focusrite’s precision digital conversion, ensuring you get the very best quality for recording and replay alike. Focusrite has been building converters since the introduction of its mastering converter in 1993, and our careful choice of components and equally careful board design and multi-layer circuit boards ensure that you get superior low noise and distortion performance.

18 Separate Inputs
The first pair of 18i8’s four mic pres offer Mic/Line/Instrument on universal XLR/TRS connectors, while 3 and 4 offer Mic/Line capability on universal XLRs. All four are on the front panel and include pads and 48V phantom power. Four more line inputs are provided on TRS connectors. An ADAT optical digital connector provides eight additional digital inputs that can also be used with external mic preamps like Focusrite's OctoPre Mk II to increase the number of mic inputs the 18i8 can handle to 12. A stereo S/PDIF coaxial input is also included.

8 Independent Outputs
Two TRS monitor outputs are provided, plus stereo S/PDIF coax and two independent stereo headphone outputs – each with their own volume control, so artist and engineer can adjust their own monitoring settings. No breakout cables are required: all analogue inputs and outputs have their own connectors, and all feature Focusrite precision 24-bit, 96kHz sampling A/D and D/A conversion to get the most accurate signal possible into and out of recording applications on Windows, Mac® and now iOS apps.

Tough, Innovative Hardware
Scarlett 18i8 is housed in a compact red unibody metal case to withstand the rigours of the road – and the studio. Input level controls feature signal halos – LED rings around the level control that give a simple and immediate go/no-go level indication: green means there is a recordable signal while red indicates overload. A large main monitor knob with mute button means that main monitor levels are always at your fingertips.

Included Software
Included in the package is the Scarlett MixControl low-latency DSP-based software mixer and router, with intuitive one-click presets and Focusrite’s trademark low latency – under 1.4 ms. You’ll also find the Scarlett plug-in suite for VST, AU and RTAS, offering EQ, gate, compression and reverb, plus Ableton Live Lite, the Novation Bass Station soft synth and a Loopmasters sample pack.

Includes the Focusrite Red 2 and Red 3 Plug-In Suite (AAX/AU/VST) upon registration of interface. Accurately modeled on the classic Red 2 EQ and Red 3 Compressor, the Red plug-ins let you exploit the sound of the hardware originals, conveniently from within Pro Tools (10 and above) and other audio software.

Comments about Scarlett 18i8 Audio Interface:

Overall disappointed. The hardware construction is good but when it came time to recording basic 16 bit at 48khz there was a lot of issues. This was with a intel i7 processor with 12 gigs of ram.

Comments about Focusrite Scarlett 18i8 Audio Interface:

This unit has a good selection of I/Os on board (18i / 8o) plus can be expanded thru the Optical port (Additional 12 analog inputs w/preamps). The 18 Inputs can be arranged into 8 mix channels mono or 4 stereo. The outputs can be arranged into 8 mono outs or 4 stereo outs. Any IN can go to any OUT or multiple OUTS. The sound quality is excellent and the unit is easy to configure thru the Scarlett Mixer. There is not much that you can't change thru the Mixer Utility to make operating the unit easier. The color changing ring around the gain knob is a great feature and makes setting the gain a snap. The ring changes from green to yellow to orange to red. The mixer also has a channel lever that holds the highest level until reset and a peak level indicator. The unit comes with Abington Lite, Scarlett Mix, some plug ins, drum programs and bass programs. However, this unit can be controlled by almost any DAW or Recording software.

Comments about Focusrite Scarlett 18i8 Audio Interface:

i love it, it was easy to set up, gets nice sound out of bass direct in, gets a great drum sound with 4 mics direct in, same with vocals direct in. i didn't need any additional preamps and i'm getting rest sound. the additional software is dope, Novation bass station! I'm happy with the 18i8 it's been working great for my band dub proof and our home recordings.

Comments about Focusrite Scarlett 18i8 Audio Interface:

its a great little interface. the 2 headphone outs and 4 inputs on the front of the unit makes it very east to use for a band in a living room with a laptop situation. it's also great sitting on my desk. the knobs are plastic and light up when signal pass thru, it's sound pretty crisp and clear. the latency is a non issue. the mix control is ok… the 4 inputs on the back do not have any gain control... it comes with some software, the Scarlet stuff is good, the Red stuff is good, the Novation Bass Station is Awesome! I use it with Ableton Live and i record reggae bands i also use a Push and do some dance music and i would recommend this interface.

Comments about Focusrite Scarlett 18i8 Audio Interface:

Before I got this, I was using a Tascam us-1800. The Tascam is O.K. for it's price, and you get more inputs initially.

The game changer for me was the quality of the A/D converters. recording the same sources (especially my guitars and bass direct in and amping with guitar rig 5) were very noticeably better.

It also has a built in DSP mixer for monitoring, so I no longer needed an external mixer for zero latency monitoring. (the Tascam has that blend knob thing, but let's be real, that thing is terrible)

the bundled VST's seem nice. So far I have only used the reverb, but it really sweetens vox nice and subtly (the way you want it)

between buying this and a new bass guitar, my recording went from demo to pro sounding overnight (well, literally, over 2 days I had redone a song start to finish and it sounded amazing).

no regrets on this thing at all. Mic pres are clean with lots of headroom, and the converters are top notch in the price range.

Comments about Focusrite Scarlett 18i8 Audio Interface:

Think twice before buying this. It's a great interface except there is a very nasty distortion present on recorded tracks when you record in 16 bit depth. I did some internet research and noticed many others had similar issues. What a letdown. I contacted Focusrite about the issue but they never got back to me. I'll probably be returning this interface...
