Focusrite

Robust 2 in, 4 out USB powered recording interface.

The Focusrite Scarlett 2i4 is a robust 2 in / 4 out USB recording interface that combines affordability, cross-platform operation, a comprehensive feature set and the best audio performance in its class. It’s a perfect match for both the musician and the digital DJ – and it comes in an elegant, road-ready anodized aluminum unibody case.

Scarlett 2i4 is a great tool for any musician, with its two award-winning Focusrite microphone/line/instrument preamps accessed via universal front-panel XLR/TRS sockets, combined with professional 24-bit, 96kHz conversion, plus class-leading analogue and digital design from input to output to ensure pristine audio quality throughout the signal path.

With its 48V phantom power capability, Scarlett 2i4 is perfect for recording guitar, vocal, or even stereo piano, with high-quality condenser mics. You will love the direct monitoring mode, which removes the latencies associated with listening back to the input signal through the DAW. You can record into the DAW in real time, whilst hearing a zero latency monitor feed from their input sources, controlled by a single knob for easy blending between direct monitoring and DAW playback. In common with other interfaces in the Scarlett series, input level controls feature a novel LED “signal halo” around the knob that indicates signal presence (green) and input overload (red), while a large-diameter silver volume knob gives you full and accurate control over monitor levels at all times, so whether you are mixing your music, or listening back to the track, the levels will always be in your control.

Alongside the two Focusrite preamps are four RCA phono outputs, two of which are also available on balanced TRS sockets. These, coupled with the high-level headphone output and flexible monitoring capability make Scarlett 2i4 ideal for digital DJs. Send outputs 1 & 2 to the main PA and use 3 & 4 for cueing, or send all four to a mixer. The converter performance ensures that the quality of the audio streamed from the computer is sonically superb. An A/B source switch for monitoring either of two stereo output pairs via the high-level headphone output provide everything that’s required from a DJ interface.

MIDI input and output are included in Scarlett 2i4, allowing capture of performances with MIDI keyboards and controllers and the ability to play parts out to instruments and sound modules, recording their audio via 2i4’s TRS inputs.

Scarlett 2i4 comes complete with an excellent package of software tools to help you get your music down straight away. The latest version of the Focusrite Scarlett Plug-in Suite includes Compressor, Reverb, Gate and EQ in the form of VST/AU/RTAS plug-ins. Focusrite’s established Xcite+ bundle is also included, which features Ableton Live Lite (for all your production, performance and compositional needs), Novation’s Bass Station soft synth and over 1GB of royalty-free samples from Loopmasters.

Scarlett 2i4 delivers high quality, 24-bit 96kHz audio to and from both Macintosh and Windows computers with USB 2.0 capability – and it’s bus powered so you only need to plug in the included USB cable to start making music.

Comments about Focusrite Scarlett 2i4 USB Audio Interface:

I'm just going to cut right to the chase. The Scarlett 2i4 was a decent unit that did everything I (an amateur bedroom musician)needed it to... until it broke... twice. Musicians Friend showed excellent customer support as always, but this interface just isn't reliable. Most everyone I've spoken to who used this product had similar problems and complaints. Please save your money and do your research to find a more reliable product. I'm not one to write reviews very often, but I've had such a negative experience with this product that I really want to save everyone else the overwhelming disappointment that I've felt.

Comments about Focusrite Scarlett 2i4 USB Audio Interface:

I'm using this with Windows 8.1 + Cubase 7.5, and it works perfectly so far.
The reason I went for this one over the 2i2 was because of the midi. My wife and I have a Yamaha P-95 hooked up through the midi for recording purposes, and it's worked perfectly. It took a bit to get the drivers working right, but I'm sure it was more my problem getting Cubase set up for the interface.
The interface is clean and clear. I just don't like the latency issues I'm having. The delay is very slight, but it's noticeable, so it's annoying when you're recording. I think it's somewhere around 20 ms.

Comments about Focusrite Scarlett 2i4 USB Audio Interface:

Extremely clean and transparent preamps at this or any price level. Could use a little more gain on the headphone output. Other than that, I am extremely happy with the purchase! Coupled with a transparent mic like the AT4033, it shines, what you put in is what you get out. I have worked in studios with Neve, SSL, Pultec etc… For the home studio, if you don't need many simultaneous inputs, this will get the job done nicely. Using it with the latest version of Reaper (if you don't know Reaper, check it out!)

Serious problems running with MacOS X.9

Comments about Focusrite Scarlett 2i4 USB Audio Interface:

Clicks, pops, garbled, fades and then stops working completely until you restart everything on MacOS X.9 (Mavericks). Focusrite offers several "solutions"... none of which work.

The unit worked, but only slightly. The USB connector was defective and the unit would disconnect from my PC at the slightest touch. Other than that I guess it worked the way it was supposed to, but I wound up returning it.

Comments about Focusrite Scarlett 2i4 USB Audio Interface:

Just picked one of these up from guitar center, and I'm extremely happy. It was plug and play in my macbook, and I was up and running recording with every instrument in the house in no time. 2 XLR/quarter-inch inputs means I can track my vocals and guitars at the same time. Midi I/O means I can hook up my keyboard to control synths. Phantom power means I don't need that stupid external unit any more. There are a few more other features that are nice like the monitor sync and the fact that it runs solely off USB. My only issues are 1) only one headphone jack (but can you expect more for the price?) and 2) line out is RCA and not quarter-inch. I'll likely buy a couple adapters so that I can start running my guitar through my macbook as my effects station.

Comments about Focusrite Scarlett 2i4 USB Audio Interface:

This is a great little interface. I talked to several of my friends in the recording industry and they only had good things to say about focusrite and their gear so I decide to invest in a small interface to do some home recording stuff. I went with the Scarlett 2i4 and it does everything a singer/songwriter would need it to. I play guitar and write songs and it can record with great quality both guitar and vocals. Lately I've been trying out mics at some friends studio's and I can just stick this in my backpack along with my laptop and go and have everything setup in less than 5 minutes. The only bad thing and I wouldn't say its a bad thing would be it only has 2 inputs making recording drums imposible unless you got a mixer and premixed the drums and then sent them to the interface to be recorded. But if your looking at something with only 2 inputs then this is what you want to go with. It's a great product for the price and does the job well. I'm planing on getting my basic tracks with guitar and vocals down with this and going to a friends studio to record drums then finishing keys, bass, and electric with this and thus far its done everything perfect for me! A great buy!

Comments about Focusrite Scarlett 2i4 USB Audio Interface:

It is obvious to me as in the other review here that people blame their own faulty equipment on the gear. Why mine is sparkling clear and the inputs are noiseless may say more about my great cables than the other reviewer. I also do not use a Mac which are way overrated. This unit is excellent and I am extremely happy with it.

Comments about Focusrite Scarlett 2i4 USB Audio Interface:

I recently purchased a Scarlett 2i4 for a simple recording rig with my macbook pro and Logic. The unit was very easy to use and sounded great. However, input 2 (1/4" input) added a very strange static type noise to anything I plugged into it. So, I returned it and ordered another to replace it. When I received the new one, same problem. Only this time, it affected both inputs. I sent it back and ordered an Apogee Duet 2. If the Scarlett didn't have that problem, it would've been perfect for me. However, Focusrite lost my trust with this experience.
