Comments about Fostex FR-2LE CF Field Recorder:
This is great quality recorder when used with your microphones. The built in mics are not suitable for making high quality recordings. I use Neumann and AKG mics. The preamps are solid, clean and strong. I highly recommend getting the rc battery pack (get 2) and a large, 4 gig or more, CF card. You can record for 2 days at CD quality and never need to be near a power supply. The remote is very functional with a red or green indicator light. The Fostex has performed without fail, is easy to use, and I would recommend to anyone planning on recording with their own microphones.
Comments about Fostex FR-2LE CF Field Recorder:
I have been using the FR2-LE Field Recorder every day for a little over a week. I have also tried to put it through its paces, by recording live music, birds, nature sounds and sound effects. In all, I think that I have used the recorder enough to make some reasonable comments. Just remember that these are my feelings and your feelings might be totally different. First off, I wish that the mic trim knobs were a little bigger. I know that this is the Light Edition of the FR2 but they could have made the knobs a little bigger so that they would be a little easier to use. Next item that I am not to keen on, are the push buttons on the top of the unit. They are not solidly mounted to the top of the case. When you push on one of the end buttons in the row the whole button strip moves down into the case but they are still useable. This does not give you a positive feel and it feels a little mushy. The LEDs on the outside of the case are not as bright as they appear in the pictures on the Fostex site. They are totally useless outside in the daytime. Also I wish that they could have added twice as many LEDs so that you have a better feel of where your level is. It is a little tight on your fingers getting the CF card out of the unit. In my opinion these are all minor gripes and may or may not concern you. Well those are my gripes, now for the good points. The pre amps, mic trims, mic limit, LCD display, input and output hardware are all top notch. I have no complaints at all in this department. The menu and file system are both very straightforward and easy to use and very flexible. Battery usage is much improved over the FR2, also there are four battery types that can be used. The instruction manual is first class. Finally the overall quality of the recording is quite acceptable. I really like the units small size and it travels well. I have given this unit an Overall rating of 8 because of the minor gripes that I have listed but still I am pleased with my purchase. I just think that they could have done a little better in the areas that I have listed in my gripes. Final note, I am probably going to buy another FR2-LE as an affordable backup to this unit.
