I am new to the whole recording scene and have little knowledge with recording devices. This unit is fantastically user friendly, I learned how to operate the MR8-HD within an hour of reading the manual! Also not knowing anything about recording as I said I was scared the quality would be less than good because this unit is price lower than the other multi-track recorders, well I was proven wrong BIG time! The editing features are quite limited but that?s ok I just load the file easily to my PC into ACID Music studio and that solves all of my problems! In addition the fact that it is so portable means I can record any where I bring the unit! Over all this unit is great for those, like myself, who wish to record their work with great quality but can't afford the Pro equipment. Fostex has created a fantastic piece of equipment, Thanks Fostex! Oh also when you buy the MR8-HD, PURCHASE the warranty it will save you a lot of time and frustration!

Everytime I record, it freezes up. I loose all of what I just recorded. Usually, we record guitar, bass, vocals, and drum tracks at the same time using the different inputs- so when it freezes we have to do everything over again. This really stinks, especially when you had the song perfect, and when you had lucky noises (feedback, drum fills, guitar noises), and the recorder freezes up and makes you record again. You end up recording about 3 or 4 times before it finally works. Also, in between each time you have to wait for it to cool down, making it a huge waste of time for just one song or track. Another thing that is horrible about this product, is that when you convert your finished song, the mixing gets messed up. The bass gets louder along with vocals, while guitar and drums become almost un-hearable. Don't waste your time with this product, get something made by a different brand.

hmmmm

By Comrade F.

from Philadelphia

I have owned it for a year now and it has been a dissapointment at every turn. Plain and simple it has absolutely no tone control and it has a lot of problems picking up bass and other low end frequencies. You should consider avoiding this product. Most recently it has given me error messages when trying to bounce tracks to wav.

Buy it!

I highly recommend this recorder. It's easy to use, and the recordings sound great. If you don't own a digital recorder yet, get this one. Even if you have no intentions of recording a CD, this machine will allow you to hear yourself so you can improve your sound.

Legendary Device

By Jenkinator

from Denver, CO

Take it from someone who has ben doing home recordings for 15 years, this 8 track is the best quality recorder in its class. I've had mine for almost 2 years now, and I've recorded over 100 songs on it in that time. It still works and runs as perfectly as it did the day I bought it. Solid construction, simple to use, it's the perfect (and super affordable) home recorder. If you're looking for the best 8 track for the money, this is absolutely it.

Simple/Clean/Convenient- could use 1 more feature

By OldSchool-YoungHeart

from Elma, WA

The Fostex MR8HD 8-Track is a great tool for any musician who wants to be able to quickly and easily record ideas or demos. It is very lightweight and portable, easy to use, makes quality recordings for the price range, and has some handy features like built in effects, phantom power, a metronome, and the ability to record 4 tracks at once. It's definitely worth the price I paid. Now the stuff I wasn't crazy about: I didn't like the fact that when I recorded a track with the built in effects, the track is actually dry and the effects are added on playback or mix down. The problem with that is when you want to change effects for the next track you change it (on playback) for the first track as well. A work around is to use your own effects before the MR8HD and record them then use the built in effects for mix down. The main feature I would have liked was the ability to bounce multiple tracks to a SINGLE track. You have to either bounce them to tracks 5&6 or 7&8, which dramatically reduces the overall amount of recordable tracks.Bottom line I still think it's a great and handy unit for the cash, I?m super happy with my purchase!

Great Recorder

I have had my MR8HD for about 6 months now and I am very satisfied. The only issue I have is that the pre's could be better, but they work fine for me with a couple of inexpensive condenser mics. In addition, they have a great user forum to help you with learning to use the machine and IMHO, better than average customer support. As with any new device, there will be a learning curve before you use it to its full potential, but that is largely due to the fact that it is so easy to start laying down tracks that most new users start doing exactly that without taking the time to learn about track bouncing, transferring files to pc, etc. Most of the problems I have read about here have been resolved quickly with firmware updates.

Some Issues

By tRICKster

from Mississauga, ON

This is a nice little machine that has some bugs. There is a recall on some early serial numbers, and beyond that there's a steady stream of software updates. I gave it 5 stars on quality just because of the software issues, and dead air from customer support at Fostex. But the machine is solidly built though I do hear some scratchyness when turning the panning knobs.

Great Machine

This recorder has many good features. The effects are not that great, but I don't use them anyway so thats no big deal. I use this as the final recorder after I record the entire mix on another Fostex recorder (the D2424LV). Plus I have also used this to record live wind bands, brass choirs, small orchestras etc. You get a clean sound with great portability. I have however two complaints: 1.) The manual is pretty much useles, which seems to be a company standard for Fostex, because the D2424LV is the same way. I think it is written in Japanese or something first then translated to English by someone who doesnt even speak it very well. 2.) The USB port on the back is a little flimsy. I'm afraid that if I push the cable in very hard the jack is going to break. Other than that this is a great machine. And I couldn't be more pleased!

Great recording machine for amatuer musicians!

By Anonymous

from Undisclosed

I have had this machine for over a year now and have recorded one CD which sounds good to my ears and others who have listened to the recording. The CD was recorded using Shure 57 & 58 microphones. It took a little bit of trial and error figuring it out in the beginning, but I now find it relatively easy to operate. I have had no problems with this unit freezing up.

Could Be Great...but it ain't!!

By bat74

from Portland OR

I bought this a year ago. For the price and the number of features this box has it could be a great little home studio but IT NEVER WANTS TO WORK! It locks up constantly. The hard drive continues to run even after everything else shuts down. Eventually you just have to pull the plug. The buttons are cheap but I havn't had the kind of problems others have because the is no point pushing them if the software is locked up! If you by this unit save the reciept and put in a lot of work right away to make sure it functions..the moment you start having troubles return it.

Great product at a great price

By Captaincrunch

from Central New Jersey

I'm new to multitrack. So I was real worried that I'd make a mistake in my first purchase. Picked this up so that I can help my daughter make demo CD's for piano and violin auditions. We're classical fanatics and have tried (and failed in the past) to put together some economical equipment that would capture the full sound of a grand piano or concert violin. The Fostex MR8HD-8 sounds great and was easy for a newbee like me to figure out. You do have to read the 140 page manual, but it is extremely well written. Once you learn the pattern of the logic for the controls it all becomes very easy to use. I agree with the other reviewers that the 40G hard drive and the phantom power for condenser mics is absolutely the way to go, and the MR8HD-8 has it. Each of the inputs has a peak LED that tells you if you are saturating the input. In addition, the LCD screen gives you bar graphs of each track so that you can balance things out. One of my requirements was that it be small enough to be easy to take along. Since this unit is about a square foot by 4 inch thick, it really fits small nooks easy. Yet it is solidly built. Sweet deal.

Great

By Sandman-89uim

There is some hiss and the rythym guide bleeds over a little through the system if you record while it is operating, when you go back to turn it off you can still hear it. I have to run imputs though a mixing board first so that I can eq the signal. And reverse engineer the proceedure for final mix due to the fact I can't seem to find any kind of EQ on board the unit. Other than that it is a very solid unit.

no lemon here

I've had my MR8HD for a month now and I'm having fun just learning to use it until I do some serious recording. So far, every function works great.Granted, there aren't a lot of effects, but that can be remedied with an external mixer. Every product has a lemon from time to time, and if you're not happy with, send it back and try another. But I can tell you this. My MR8HD is teriffic. No lemon here.

Perfect

By Anonymous

This baby helped me on my way to finishing me and my band's first CD! all you need is to get a cheap microphone, cable (and backup cable), and stand, along with all of your other instruments and play your heart out! Next, I payed attention to the extras: the distortion and the mic effects. The Distortion was a bit fuzzy at times, but we managed and changed it up a little bit later on, but it was very enjoyable to play around with. And same for the mic effects- you have to incorperate them in for the style you want the song (though is still is fun to make explosion sounds with a mic). It's great for beginners, but is still does the job well. People always think that if something is cheap, it sucks, this is a major exception! By the way, get a bigger memory card for it so you have more room to put in the extra songs that you're afraid of forgetting. Buy it!

First time digital recorder

Great experience

By Sylvain

from boulder, CO

I bought it 3 weeks ago, It's my first recorder, but being electronic engineer, I screened every specification before and after buying it. The main complain from many people has been the hard disk noise, the usability of some features, and the poor effects. My opinion is that except the hard disk annoying hard disk noise (I would like to speak to fostex buyers...I worked on disk industry and there is today good/cheap quality hard drive less noisy), everything else is manageable and spending a few hours reading the manual, as well as expecting just fair effects, which is what you get, is reasonable. I don't think there is a better/shipper digital recorder with 4 simultaneous tracks in the market and it's easy to use. I would have appreciate a basic software to edit tracks before burning CD's, an usb cable and a condensed user guide, 1 page. Bottom line: Thumbs up

Limited

By SJH

You might be able to get some decent acoustic guitar and vocal tracks, but trying to get any relatively good electric tracks is pretty hopeless. Your options for editing the sound once you've recorded something are extremely limited. I'de suggest saving up for even a lower end Boss.

Great package for the price

By HeadCandy420

I purchased this recently to replace my broken Tascam 788 (great workstation). So far I am very impressed. Four channels of simultaneous recording for this price can't be beat. It's very easy to operate. If you've used a digital workstation before, chances are you'll just need to browse the owners manual..very intuitive operation. Overdubbing and bouncing couldn't be easier, and it will convert your mastered music into a .wav file in under a minute. Easy to then export to a computer for further mixing or burning. Phantom power for mics and a 40gig hard drive boost the value of this machine as well. The good outweighs the bad on this unit, hands down.I will mention some things that are annoying though: response time on start/stop/rewind/fast forward is a little slow. It's hard to locate an exact time in your recording. It has no phantom tracks, and you can only mark your recording with a start/stop point. (My 788 allowed 99 marks per song, and also had 99 phantom tracks per song as well..great for multiple takes to get it just right, without wasting another track). Other than that, if you are on a limited budget and need a quality machine to add to your home studio, you can't go wrong with this one! Props Fostex!

Excellent unit for the money

By Tguen63

from Olathe, KS

This is my first multitrack recorder and I have had it for a few weeks. I think it is a great product for the money. The eight tracks consist of four mono tracks plus two stereo tracks. This is not as useful as eight independent mono tracks, but with some planning you can still do a lot with it (up to 14 total tracks). The effects are OK and useful for demo quality recordings. The clean amp models are also OK, but the distortion is not that great. You will probably want to use your own effects anyway. Note there is no EQ for each channel, which would be more useful than the effects in my opinion. There are 3 choices of overall EQ for the final master. The editing features are very useful. I especially like the autopunch, which allows you to fix mistakes almost seamlessly. I can hear a slight click on the individual track when I punch in/out, but it is not noticeable in the mix. The hard drive holds a ton of music - I can't imagine filling it up anytime soon. Transfer to your computer via USB is a snap. This is a great unit for making good quality demos, or as a "sketch pad" for songwriting. I also plan to use it to record our band live. The four simultaneous inputs will be great for that. Some of the reviews of the MR-8 (the model without the hard drive) say that the buttons wear out over time. I assume this unit has the same type of buttons, so I will try to take it easy on them.
