I purchased this product to do some demo tracks for my band because I was tired of waiting for studio time and thought we would try to record on our own. Well let me tell you that this unit coupled with a good tube pre-amp and studio condenser mike are fantastic. When you have folks who know how to play and record, you can get some real fine results. I mean better than some large studios where you are always competing for time and have some person controlling the board with their own ideas. I am getting some GREAT professional sounding tracks and it is easy to use. You can even write to a CD without transfer to a computer. It has a few limitations like no EQ and a strange external effect send input into one channel, but it still sounds great and works well. Best of all, the price was right.

I purchased this recorder to record church services. It does that well. I had hoped to use the recorders internal drive to archive the services before leaving church. However, most often, the services or programs are longer than the 78 minutes available on a CD. I more often download the data from the recorder to my laptop and do not use the CD recorder. Also, the USB device port on the recorder is very unstable. It works, but I often have to attempt several connections before being successful. I think I bought too much recorder for my intended use. The Mark 8 recorder with the removable CF card is probably all the recorder I need. Note: I received a Zoom H2 recorder as a Christmas gift. It is a great flexible little recorder. I think the record quality on this unit is better than the Fostex.

Not for Perfectionists or Drummers

By Anonymous

from Undisclosed

This thing just erased my original work. I was laying down the drumtracks when it locked up and everything was gone. Not fun when your intruments are not in the same locations. This recorder can't handle the constant playback after playback when trying to rework the glitches out. Need something that can handle the punches, but digital is digital I guess.

Great Fun Gadget

By Larry-qnGuS

from Minnesota

I bought this for fooling around with on Friday nights with my bluegrass pickin' buddies. It is a good value for our purpose. It is very portable. We are using it as a learning tool for making recordings just for fun. It has all the effects we need for our purposes. We have made some pretty professional sounding recordings with it. I have found no defects in the electronics or hard drive. My only complaint is that after bouncing vocals 5 or 6 times I start to get some buzz in the sound. So we are learning how to get our best sound from the second or at the most third bounce.

small problem

By brad-oKGZo

I bought this unit a few weeks ago. The only problem I have had so far is the second earphone jack shorts out when pushed all the way in! You have to push it in and then pull the plug half way out to make sure it connects. This could be a real problem while recording if the plug comes loose...

Great for beginners

I got mine about a month ago, maybe a little longer. bottom line, it produces CDs and that's what is important. No defective parts to deal with thus far. I have barely scratched the surface on what all it can do, but I have been doing a lot or recording on it so its worth every penny thus far.

Can't Judge The Book By Its Cover

If you are looking for a recorder with a lot of onboard effects, look elsewhere as you are not going to find it in this unit. Delay and Reverb and that about sums it up. I ordered it here and when I read the manual and seen what it listed for onboard effects and seen it was only delay and reverb that's when I decided to refuse the order when it arrives. Other than that it has a lot of good features too so I am not entirely knocking this recorder. If you can be satisfied with delay and reverb than go for it. I'm looking at the Tascam DP-01FX/CD instead. I rest my case here.

Read the Instructions!

You really need to spend time with the manual on this unit if you want it to work to its highest capabilities. Many fo the negative comments noted here are a result of people not reading the manual. For instance the "annoying clicking metronome" can easily be turned off. It's a great compact unit that burns CDS - it's got everything you need. Perhaps it isn't as intuitive and easy to "quickstart" as it should be - hence the big manual, but it works great with a little work.

It doesn't get any better than this

Ask me a question

I bought this after owning a Boss 8 track recorder for over a year and never figuring out how to operate it. This advertised that it was both quality and easy operation and they did not lie. Even a non computer genius like myself can get this thing recording professional quality demos with hardly any prep time. It actually talks to you in a language that you can understand and the quality is superb even when compared to more expensive units. It transfers to its own built in CD burner without difficulty and you can be playing your own recordings in your car the same day you record them. Where has this thing been all my life? If you are like me it is an absolute must have.

Not impressed with features

By meatcleaver

Purchased this recorder after much deliberation. Two friends of mine own the Fostex VFX-80 & VFX-160, & have been pleased with their performance. If you are looking for a digital multi-tracker with great effects... this ain't it!

I was freaking out when I first tried to read the manual( I think the space shuttle has a smaller manual) but after going to Fostex message boards and getting tips for other owners I was recording in no time. This thing is killer! I'm having alot of fun with it, sounds excellent! I got the Black one.

Nice little unit!

By RockinRevRan

from Ocala, Florida

I have had 3 or 4 recorders in the past few years, looking for something thats portable yet powerful. This unit is both! It's by far the easiest to operate, hardly ever looked at the manual. There is however one MAJOR problem I have with it. It has no EQ's per channel!!!! What were they thinking? You can use an external board going down (there went portable) but mixing down, specialy with vocals, EQ is a must! If they would as much as put a single Tone knob on each channel that would be a great inprovment. I love everything else about this unit. Being a vocalist, I really miss having EQ in mix down. Mostly with back ground voc's.

Good for getting your feet wet.

By Anonymous

from Undisclosed

I purchased this product about 6 months ago. It is good for getting started, but if you're serious about recording, go for something better. My biggest compliant is the hard-drive failure. about 50% of the time, after you're done recording, the thing will freeze up and lose what you just recorded. It gets old, and makes for a LONG afternoon. The mastering effects are lame and very limited. After using this product, I am convinced that using recording PROGRAMS is the best way to go. The metronome is really annoying to boot. its like nails on a chalk board.
