Clean, pure sound reproduction from the latest materials technology.
Fostex employs the latest cone material technology to obtain extremely pure music reproduction with the PM0.5 MKII Active Studio Monitors. Biamplification provides 40W to the 5" LF drivers and 18W to the extremely responsive 3/4" soft-dome tweeters. With the PMO.5 MKII upgrades, the tweeters are now a one-piece assembly with a redesigned damper to eliminate interference for clearer high-frequency response, and the cabinets sport a high-gloss piano black finish on their front. The compact cabinets are specially designed to eliminate unwanted resonance and incorporate a long bass port for deep and accurate low-frequency response.
The Fostex PMO.5's carefully tuned speaker enclosures and circuitry produce great full range performance with exceptional neutrality even at high SPLs. The LF driver cones are made from cut-and-milled aromatic polyamide fibers that are simultaneously resin-impregnated to achieve high rigidity and optimum damping. The cones also have an olefin film thermally adhered to their surface to control frequency response and to ensure long-term reliability. Resin-impregnated cellulose dust caps cover voice coils made of high-purity copper wire for extremely low distortion. Each soft dome tweeter uses UFLC (Poly Urethane Film Laminated Cloth) technology for lightweight and quality performance. Each amplifier is precisely calibrated to match the performance capability of its driver.

I've been using these monitors for two years now, and can say they deliver accurate mixes. In our studio we use a pair of Mackie hr824's, but their sound is so crystal clear it never sounds as good on a regular stereo. These Fostex monitors have a great "middle of the road" quality which makes them an ideal pair for a second reference. I use them in my home studio as the primary monitors, and in that environment they really shine.
The first set of Fostex I bought were the PM0.4's. They were great, but not enough bass, so Fostex PM0.5's were next on the list. The goal was simple... More lower bass, little space. Fostex's PM0.5 MKII's were perfect. They sound wonderful. Everything is balanced nicely. The high end is very smooth, and the bass can get quite punchy if EQ'd. They can get very loud, and still keep excellent definition, with minimal distortion. I'm compared them to the KRK RP5's, but the Fostex's seem to have more punch behind there amps. The KRK's seem to get a little harsh on the smaller sized monitors.
And man, these things are amazing. Much bigger than I thought they would be, but they also have much bigger sound. I bought a pair used, but MF only sent me one of them(But it looked brand new), so I call Customer Service and they man was very polite and very helpful. He sent me a return label and I sent it back, and they sent me a brand new pair at no extra charge. They even sent it before mine got back to them, so it was very fast. But like most other reviews say, I wish the volume control would have been on the front. Great set of monitors, great service. I love Musicians Friend, haha.
You want loud? Check. (I keep the gain at half.) You want definition? Check. You want bass? Double check. Hard to find fault with these. Put them on foam isolators, because they WILL rock your workstation.
These are great monitors for the money. Great definition and tonal quality. The ONLY thing I don't like about these is that the volume is on the back of each speaker which makes it a MINOR hassel fi and when using a source other than a mixer with a volume control. ie CD player etc.
Bang for the buck these are really hard to beat. I really wanted the HR824s but my wallet fought back. I ran across these while surfing one afternoon and decided to give them a try. WOW! They are pretty strong in the lows and mids but have plenty of highs to keep them sounding natural too. If you're looking for a pair of good, solid monitors for a reasonable price, stop here. Highly recommended.
as a rookie these were the first monitors that i bought. they sounded great. i was able to hear things that i didn't know existed in a song. they have a nice bass and very good mids and highs. i would recommend these monitors to anybody who is a rookie and doesn't want to spend a lot.
Don't waste your money here. The sound quality is really poor to average, they don?t even compare to my basic PMC monitors for transparency and accuracy. The real problem though is with the output connections, they are incredibility poor. I had loose connection problems with both monitors using various leads and in the end a cable actually got stuck in the one of the monitors. It simply would not come out. I opened the thing up in the hope of releasing it to find that the jack connection is a sealed unit and nothing could be done apart from send it away for repair or replacement. I decided to put them in the bin instead. Look elsewhere.
I have a set of these speakers to go along with my FOSTEX 16 track recorder/CD burner. They are fantastic! Clean, Clear, great highs and lows! They work extremely well. Lots of volume, great tone quality. You can not beat them for the price.
