OVERVIEW

Semi-open studio headphones with a flat, clean sound.

The PRmk3 series headphones are successors to the RPmk2 series that have been used as reliable monitor headphones in many professional recording studios for more than 30 years including from the start of the T-series. The driver unit incorporating the key Fostex proprietary Regular Phase (RP) Technology diaphragm has been refined to achieve sharper audio reproduction for more accurate monitoring. The housing, ear pads and head pad have also been re-designed to derive the maximum performance of the RP driver. This model from the series offers a semi-open design which results in a clean and flat frequency response.

Comments about Fostex T50RP mk3 Studio Headphones (Semi-Open):

Previously unfamiliar with Fostex brand, I was intrigued by positive headphone reviews and attracted by the price point. I am very pleased with the build, appearance, and most importantly -- the sound. I had no preconceived notion of what a "semi-open" unit would produce, but it truly is an enveloping, detailed, and solid music listening experiencing. My primary dedicated, focused music listening headphones are Sennheiser HD700; however, the T50RPmk3 are fun and easy to enjoy with my matched Yamaha A-S2100/SACD S2100 and Onkyo A9070/CD 7070 units, and Technics and A-T turntables. I cannot offer any thoughts on using these headphones on mobile devices, MP3 or streaming since I am purely a SACD, CD, vinyl, and tape playback enthusiast. From a wearing comfort perspective, the ear pads are very snug -- which is great from a music immersion and sound isolation viewpoint, but long-term sessions may periodically require a momentary lifting and repositioning of the headphones. As a closing comment, the headphones are definitely a YES for me, enhanced by the as-always tremendous Musician's Friend shopping and consultation experience.

Comments about Fostex T50RP mk3 Studio Headphones (Semi-Open):

Although these are considered entry-level magnetic planar headphones, you'll have difficulty finding a more exciting sound for less than double or triple the price from competing brands (especially now, while there's a rebate through July '16). They're power hungry, and they'll require a better-than-entry-level amplifier. My Fiio e17k II can't push them as loud as I'd like; so if you're just plugging them into your phone, you probably won't enjoy these. The t50rp mk3 is also very to tune and modify to your taste. Removing the internal felt cover from the inside of the vents makes them sound roomier, closing the vents boosts mids and vocals, changing the earpads makes them more comfortable, and there's no shortage of simple dampening modifications you perform to tailor the cans to exactly your taste. If you aren't into tinkering, you might want to consider going straight to a more expensive pair of headphones, perhaps offerings from Hifiman, as I feel they have a slightly richer, deeper sound. The t50rp definitely take EQ manipulation better, and if you're able to turn a Phillips head screwdriver, you'll learn a lot about audio by messing with these. Check out some web forums and see what's possible... It's really neat.
