This Gem Sound XP550 is rock solid. If you like the feel of real metal you get plenty of it here. Inside the unit the layout is spacious. The components are not squished together. This facilitates air flow from the two substantial fans along the sides. There is no shortage of internal fusing. This should avoid any serious damage to the units integrity in the event of mishap. Putting a spare fuse under the power cable insert was a nice touch from the factory. The instructions are a little vague for us novices. It took some searching on the net to make me comfortable with the hookup I have.My sound input is from the the Sub Mono Out jack of a Yamaha EMX 5000-12 mixer.(one very fine piece of equipment) The Mono Out is hooked to the left XLR input of the XP 550. The Peavy PV118 subwoofer is hooked via a 14 gauge wire with phono plugs to to the left output of the Gem Sound amp. The XP 550 is set to bridge position and the Yamaha LPF (low pass filter) switch is on. Keep in mind that this set up sends only the lowest frequencies to the PV 118 so if you really want to hear it thump you'll have to "pump up the volume". So far, I'm happy with the amp and let me tell you, my Grand Daughter and her friends can really make the windows shake.

I brought one of these amps on June 4 and it was in my hands by the 7th. The shipping of Musicians Friend is too good to be true.I had read all of the reviews so I was prepared for the odor from it being new. What I wasn't prepared for was it shutting down after 30 minutes of use. No clip lights or nothing until it shut down while I was playing at a mid level.I restarted it, and it played again for a few hours, but I kept it low and used another amp on the mains.I used it again at another show and this time the right channel went completely. So I called MF and they immediately gave me the ok to return it for a refund. It seemd to be a great value, but I'll stick to the known brands for now on.Luckily it was used just for extra speakers, but it wasn't as loud or as clear as a soundcraftmen's amp that's 15 years old and only rated at 300 per @ 4. This one is no way as powerful as its claimed to be.

Do not buy this product!

I bought this amp five months ago and it is junk! It went back to their shop to fix a bad channel...twice. Then it just stopped working all together. I wasted my money on this amp. Do not make the same mistake.

Great Deal

By dlm

I purchased two of these from the scratch-n-dent section for my church, trying to be wise with the small amount we could spend. I was nervous because I had never heard of them but I thought we wouldn't be out much if they flopped. These things worked far beyond my expectations. The bridge mode had power to spare and they were very quiet to boot. I am going to pick up a couple for myself!

Saved the day

I bought two of these, got one, second one not here yet, but... I had two shows in one weekend and was planning on my used CS-800 doing the job. The Gemsound was along for the backup, and backup it did! I set up, powered up and no sound. The Peavey finally went. So we plug in the 1 new Gemsound and back in business. Driving 2 Black widows and 2 12" others it kicked butt for 8 hours. Outdoor show, well known country band plus 6 other small groups and all were happy.Great value for any budget sound company. Can't wait to hear two of these together :)

We bought this amp (Gem Sound XP-550 Power Amp) to run our monitors and wasnt sure what to expect because of the low price but it has performed GREAT. It has plenty of power and we have not had any distortion or problems with it. The handles on the front are nice for putting it in a rack or carrying. If you need power for a low price you cant go wrong with this amp!!!

so far, so good

I've been using this amp for about a month now in a local club, three nights a week, 4-5 hours per night, and it's doing fine. I put electric and acoustic guitars, bass and vocals through it, and play cds on break. The binding post outs and XLR ins are awesome to have, and the sound is clean. Many complements on the sound (it's not the gear). I shop for new cheap gear at basement prices, and this amp delivers. Paid for itself first night.

We use two of these for our small church and they work just fine. We run mains and monitors through them at 250wts at 8ohms and only need to be up about 3/4 of the way...push our music just fine and we don't do just the traditional music either!!!

very pleased

This is my first amp so I don?t know much about them. But what I do know is that this son of a gun rocks. It is heavy a little bit. The only thing I really find that I don't like about it is that it?s very noisy. But if you got it cranked up anyways you cant hear it . As a beginner I would recommend this 550 power amp .I am happy.

great deal

By Bob Koretsky

I'm a non-professional musician that bought two of these amps to power my PA setup in my basement, and so far they work great! I've had one for a year, and just bought and installed a second one. I've had no problems with them, but I'm using them in a somewhat limited setup and have never had them cranked all the way up for 8 hours, so I'm not testing them in a professionally demanding way. If you need a pro PA amp, I recommend any of the Carvin amps or powered mixers. As far as the feaures of this amp go, they are excellent.

Wish it worked right

By figmentdj

Got the amp after it was back ordered. This is my third Gem sound product. A powered speaker that just couldn't handle normal output, a smaller amp that has been great and then this one. No real burnoff smell and it sounded great for the first hour of a reception. Then I pushed - with the Chicken Dance of all things. No clip lights but it shut off for about 10 seconds. It did it again about thirty minutes later - Pretty Woman. Hadn't even got to my serious pumping sets yet. I'd seen this before with the powered speaker. Was not going to take any chances. Can't affford to. Sending it back today. Shame too, cause I liked the price and sound quality at low levels. Gem sound is hit and miss.

I am very happy!!!

I read all the reviews and purchased this amp still, We just play a show outside and this amp performed excellant, ran all night at mono-bridge mode, running our eliminator 2 speakers rated at 1300 watts operation and they did the job, recommend for anyone trying to save some money. P.S. comes from factory set in bridge mode, so make sure you set it to non bridged or you will think only 1 channel works.

Worth the bucks

I am using this amp to push four 15" Kustoms and it is adequate. I would say that the power ratings of the amp may be on the high side as the clip indicators will flash long before its rated output is reached. But overall considering the cash outlay it is a good buy, but it needs a "power" indicator. No regrets, I would purchse the amp again.

WOW! This baby rocks! Just try it. I pushing to 18" subs and the bass is pumping the house. I cannot tell you the durability but it seem GEM is really confident about their product and brought the price low to drive competition. As a DJ I am using it as a back up amp the performance is just as good as my crown 4000. DJ's you need to have the baby in your gear as a back up.

Good Amp

By Anonymous

from Undisclosed

I purchased this amp thinking it was going to be cheap quality and wouldn't work great, but I needed something cheap as this amp was only going to be used for practice sessions. Boy I was completely wrong, this amp is great, for anything, I would recommend 2 for gigs, but for our practice sessions this amp shoots out 300 watts on each side to our Yamaha mains. Good job Gem Sound!

junk

By Anonymous

from Undisclosed

At first I thought I got lucky with this amp, had plenty of power for what I needed. It WAS pushing two Yamaha 15" PA speakers, at 8 ohms. My band was broke so we went cheap and bought a gemsound despite the reviews, and as soon as my 45 days was up to be able to return it, it quit working all together during practice. No burning smell, it wasnt even hot, was just pushing vocals through it at a low volume and then it turned off and never came back on. Now I'm shipping it to gemsound. If you dont have the money to buy a better amp, dont buy one at all, gemsound is a waste of what money you do have.

Never Again

I bought this amp and it didn't work at all so I exchanged it for another. That one seemed to work when I tested it through my stereo, but when I used it in a gig it quit ten minutes after the band started playing. Big disappointment! This site's exchange policy lapsed so I have to go through Gemsound. Gemsound has not responded to me at all even though this unit is under warranty it probably won't be by the time I get a response from them. This XP550 power amp sucks don't buy it unless you are into head aches, and getting the run around.

I bought this amp to run our bands Main Speakers and we have used it with great success. It was a little noisey on one channel but not noticeable when a signal is running. It produces good power at 4 ohm load and we have gigged extensively. You can not go wrong at this price.
