OVERVIEW

Vocal mic with exceptionally low handling noise for professional applications.

The HEIL PR 22 UT (Utility) is the award-winning dynamic PR 20 microphone. To help reduce the cost Heil pared down the packaging options. Specifications and performance characteristics remain at the high level that the PR 20 brings, wide frequency range, the ability to handle +140dB SPL and -35dB of rear rejection that makes the PR 20 and PR 22 UT the answer for a wide range of professional applications. No cutting corners on the microphone here-open a PR 22 UT and you are getting a PR 20.

The PR 22 UT has been designed for recording, live sound reinforcement. And commercial broadcast applications. This is a very rugged microphone, making it ideal for professional use where exceptionally low handling noise is needed.

The PR 22 UT achieves its exceptional performance by using a special magnet structure and a large aluminum 1-1/8" low-mass voice coil assembly. A very unique internal sorbothane suspension system has been designed to reduce undesirable handling noise. Special attention has been paid to the phasing plug assembly with equally placed ports that sense audio from behind the source entering them out of phase. This produces a very linear cardioid pattern and reduces the proximity effect while achieving the extreme articulation across its smooth 50Hz-18kHz frequency response.

This new Heil element is usable in extreme high sound pressure levels and is immune to overload conditions making it perfect for vocals. It produces a beautifully smooth audio response without the inconvenience of phantom or outside DC powering. This is one great live vocal microphone that has finally replaced the "ball mic" of the 1970s.

All Heil PR 22 UT microphones come in a leatherette carrying bag with mic clip, one stainless mesh grill, and an acoustical foam windscreen.

Bob Heil explains the difference:
Heil Sound's president and founder Bob Heil explains, "The PR 20 is shipped standard with an abundance of accessories which includes interchangeable gold, silver, and black screw-on grill screens, plus a plush padded carrying case. While many customers appreciate and use these items, there is a large group of musicians, sound companies and contractors who need a simple 'one-take' PR 20. By streamlining the packaging, we can dramatically lower the price without one single alteration to the microphone itself. Think of the PR 20 UT as a PR 20 without the 'bling'!"

After reading reviews on this Mic and listening to a few YouTube videos, I had a good feeling about purchasing the Heil PR 22 UT and I went for it. Absolute best live mic I have owned. Hooked up first time today at rehearsals and was immediately blown way by crystal clear perfectly balanced sound. something I usually only get with much more expensive studio Microphone. I have never been a big fan of Sure SM58 and many others popular brands over the years for live performance. This Mic has breath and such a well balanced frequency response that I only needed to make very small channel strip frequency changes to make this mic fit my voice. With the Sm58 I spent 15 to 20 minutes adjusting channel strip just to get something close to balanced sound out of it I always ended up going with a satisfactory Mic response. Well All I can say is Buy, Buy, Buy and see for yourself you will not be disappointed. As far as the noise rejection read Yamaha Drummer review he is dead on in his review. My other band mates are so impressed with this mic they immediately decided to change to Heil pr 22 UT for themselves.

Had this microphone on stage next to two E series Sennheisers and this mic had too much bass for a male vocal. Took a lot of EQ to get it anywhere near clear and then still paled in comparison to the other two mics, which were clear, crisp and excellent sounding right out of the box. I've used the PR35 and it is a fantastic microphone and works as advertised. This is not a PR35.

Comments about Heil Sound PR 22 UT (Utility):

Overall, I would rate this mic a 12 on a 1 to 10 rating, especially for a Singing Drummer. Ive never used nor owned a better mic. Drummers who sing, especially those who sing lead vocal as well as harmony vocals have a real problem with vocal mics because they pick up the snare drum and cymbals almost as good as they pick up the vocals, even when the drummer is singing right up against the mic. The Heil has so much side and back of the mic rejection that you hear very very little of anything except the voice. When you get right up against the mic and sing those low notes, you get such a deep smooth response. Its not harsh nor is it boomy...and as you sing on up the scale, that smoothness follows. If you want a mic that sounds as good as more expensive beauties but dont have the cash to buy one then you need to try the Heil PR-22UT. This is the best mic Ive ever used live on-stage behind my drum kit after 45 years of playing and singing professionally.
I just bought one of these marvelous mics and I sing in a variety band 10 gigs a month and I also play drums while Im singing, so I need a mic that is highly directional and that has superior side attenuation. Singing drummers always have a problem with mics picking up their cymbals and snare drum. This mic is absolutely Perfecty designed for a Singing Drummer~! I record every set we play, each night we play on a digital recorder. The other 4 guys have complained in the past about my mic picking up that snare drum and crash cymbal especially until I got the Heil PR-22UT. They Love This Mic. My voice comes thru with out the drums mixed in. The response of this mic amazes me. Ive tried using a Shure 57, 58, 58 Beta, Sennheiser 855, Peavey 45i & a Peavey PVM-22 and they all pick up the snare and cymbals and truthfully, the Heil PR-22UT sounds "Better". I have an alto lead vocal voice but I do quite a lot of the high second part harmony vocals as well. The Heil is the only mic Ive used that gives me the low end without sounding harsh or distorted. The response from low to high is smoother than any of these other mics.
For the price, you cant get a better quality mic. After actually using a wide variety of quality vocal dynamic mics the Heil PR-22's quality is on the same scale as the mics costing more. You cannot find a mic in the price range of the Heil PR-22UT that has the same vocal quality.
The value of this mic is far and above the price you pay for it. I have been using a wide variety of mics, all of them priced at or above the price of the Heil PR-22UT and none of them come close to the Heil. So for the Value of this mic...it is "Fantastic".

Comments about Heil Sound PR 22 UT (Utility):

I do a lot of live sound work. I love my PR22's. They are a very versatile mic. They sound great on vocals and snare drum. I have yet to use them in an application where they have not out performed the usual Shure, Sennheiser, Audix, and AKG mics we typically see. A must have for your mic collection.

Comments about Heil Sound PR 22 UT (Utility):

Being a professional singing drummer for 45 plus years, the one area of my performance always bothered me: Mics pick up the off-axis sounds of the drums, and not at a low volume. In fact, most mics pick up enough drums in the mic channel to be heard quite loudly. Ive used almost every mic that fits in a regular mic holder and they all pick up the drums...But not so with the Heil PR-22UT...at least not at a noticeable level.
This mics off-axis and rear rejection is the best Ive ever found and it has no handling noise..yet the frequency response is perfectly suited for vocals - as well as being a darned good Snare drum mic. I own not just one...but two of these beauties. One for my sit down gig set up and one for my road gig set up.
Bottom Line: This is the best vocal mic a singing drummer could ask for~and~ the best vocal mic a Lead vocal singer could ask for~!!!

At a recent gig, where I was the designated lead vocalist as well as keyboardist, my girlfriend noted that I was hard to hear, which echoed comments by fellow bandmates. I had been using the SM58, did research, Heil kept coming up. Got it, at practice everyone noted how much better the level and and detail of my vocals were. This is with the same eq/levels, etc. from before. If you are a screamer, this may be too sensitive, but for this older dude, perfect!

Comments about Heil Sound PR 22 UT (Utility):

At the suggestion of many users on the prosoundweb forums, I purchased this microphone to audition alongside many of its competitors in the $99-$150 range. I auditioned the Rode M1, Audix OM6, EV N/D767, and SM58. My choice is now a toss up between the EV N/D767 and the Heil PR22.

At first, this microphone caught me off guard with how much the ~1-3kHz range stood out. I am accustomed to boosting this range for most vocalists on most microphones. Using the Heil PR22, I have been running the EQ flat sometimes pulling back around 2kHz for certain vocalists.

I am blown away by the clarity and mid range articulation of this microphone. In many ways it competes with condenser mics that cost twice as much.

I highly recommend this microphone. I haven't needed to contact Heil customer service yet but from what I've heard from other users, their customer service is excellent.

The reviews are the reason I chose the Heil dynamic mic. I was so surprised at the vocal reproduction in my home studio and on stage. It truly does perform almost like a condensor mic.
It records exceptional acoustic guitar, no preamp needed. Great reproduction of tone. Can't go wrong with this or any Heil mic.

Good for Ham Radio but since this is a studio mic, you will need to roll off some of the lows, and raise the highs with your transceiver's parametric equalizer. Then you will get excellent transmitted audio reports. Also, you will need to get the correct XLR cable for your radio in order to use this mic.

I have never liked the sound of my voice through any microphone. I saw so many reviews that addressed this exact topic that I took advantage of a discount offer emailed to me by MF and I bought the PR22UT. I actually enjoy hearing my own voice now. I'm not a singer, but I sing all the time, and this mic makes me enjoy it. I also set it up for one of our female singers at a recent outdoor show and she sounded amazing.
