Having received an iPad for Christmas I wanted to explore the world of guitar amp sims. The thought was that I could use my iPad to play some gigs rather than hauling out my full rig. I did not want to spend much at first, as this was still considered an experiment.

With that in mind, the iRig does exactly what is expected of it. However, after several weeks of using it and playing live with this rig, I started noticing how noisy this system was. It was less noisy on patches revolving around a clean guitar sound as opposed to higher gain settings, which one would expect to be the case. Unfortunately this noise requires me to use one of my FX slots in JamUp XT Pro for a noise gate, which does not remove the problem entirely, but does make it more bearable at the sacrifice of some tone and dynamics.

After doing some research, I have found that the noise in the system is coming from the iRig and is due to it's connecting to the iPad via the headphone jack on the device. In the course of researching, I have found that this is a common problem for the entry level iRig and that the higher level interfaces that use the 30pin or Lightning port do not have this issue.

I would definitely buy the iRig again. It has served me well so far. Now that I know that I want to continue working with amp sims and that they are viable for my needs, I will probably upgrade to the iRig Pro so that I can integrate a midi footswitch into my live setup. If I were not wanting to integrate that midi footswitch, then I would probably upgrade to one of the Apogee products.

As an entry level product, however, the iRig is a definite winner. Just be aware that you will have noise in your signal.

Expect a toy that if you can get it to work will be fun to goof around with. My first one was dead on arrival. The replacement is working.

Don't waste your time

By marc fitch

Comments about IK Multimedia iRig - Audio Interface Adapter for iPhone, iPod, iPad:

Save your money and look for a better product, with better manuals and documentation.
Does not work as advertised. I expected to be able to plug and play and also play along with IPod songs. However, the amp models have almost no volume in relation to the I pod songs, so the song overpowers your guitar sound. Never really got a good balance where your guitar stands out. Apparently you have to tweak the input and output settings in the set up menu to get a balanced sound. Howevver, why should you have to waste time adjusting the set-up upon your initial use, just so you can use the thing? Don't expect to plug in and play.

Also, the free amps have almost no volume with standard earbuds. You can probably adjust all of this stuff but no documentation is provided in the box and you have to do an extensive search on line to find any useful tips. Poor documentation, week amp tones and time spent tweaking = no fun
Plug does not work with many Iphone 4 cases. Ballistic cases in particular. You need to remove the case to get the plug to fit in. Make sure the plug fits if you have a case on your IPhone or you will need to use without your case or get a new case.
Doesn't really work as advertised. So far it ranks up there as one of the most disappointing add ons and apps for the IPhone that I have purchased to date.

Comments about IK Multimedia iRig - Audio Interface Adapter for iPhone, iPod, iPad:

I bought this to plug into my iPad and practice the bass along with songs our band is playing. The free app "amplitude" was a bit time consuming but well worth it. I can put all the songs from our set list in one place. Amplitude will even let me cut out the voice so I can hear the instrumentation better. The loop feature allows me to mark sections of songs that I need to work on and repeats over and over. I play it through a Fender G-DEC and it sounds fine. This gadget is well worth the price and I am delighted with this purchase.

First would like to thank all at Musician's Friend. Get my orders quickly and always have a follow up after placing the order. The candy is nice, too.
These interfaces are fantastic. Negative reviews I read don't make any sense. Some complained about hissing. Last time I turned on a twin verb, it sounded just like it did in amplitube. Sounded great. 59 Bassman, Delux Reverb, Metal, Clean, Lead, all sounded great.
Bottom line--get it. Not hard to use and the support staff is great--issues were self imposed in the record setting. They got me out of it in one email.

Love the product, but really happy w/ Musician's Friend customer service. When I received the unit I was unable to get any audio to come through the speaker/headphone jack. Called MF and no questions asked, just shipped me another one and said don't worry about getting us the original since the cost of shipping and processing didn't make it worthwhile. Small purchase but it was my first experience w/ MF and you now have a loyal customer. Thanks!!

A great little tool. Love all the features. I rtecomend this product to beginers & pros alike.
Picked up the iRig on sale last month and it's great. My wife says thanks for the PEACE. Even with a small practice amp, pedals, tuner etc. and headphones, I'm still bothering someone at home. I plug this little sucker to my iPad with my studio phones and thats it. I use Garage band and pedal aps and bother no one and I can do this anywhere, I just plug in my guitar. I also recieved it real quick. I always do. Thanks MF.
          No problems whatsoever.
I got it on sale 23.99.

You'll see some folks who like this and some who don't. This is a good app that isn't all that well documented - hence the bad reviews. When you first start this up, go to Setup and adjust the input level. Mine (and a lot of the reviewers here) need to reduce the input level to eliminate cutouts and other unpleasant problems. 30 seconds with the setup and you'll find this app a lot of fun.

Comments about IK Multimedia iRig - Audio Interface Adapter for iPhone, iPod, iPad:

Forget it. Too noisy, IK's Amplitube for iPhone doesn't even come up to the standards of their PC based plugins. Pretty much a toy.
The interface itself is okay. I like that it fits into the headphone jack of my iPhone, that no special cables are required, and that it even fits with my Otterbox case still on my phone. It is light, compact, and easy to carry in a pocket if need be.
Horrible sound quality. Noisy at all but the lowest gain settings. There's a lot of white hash in the background. Noise floor is just too high for even casual playing. If I'm reviewing IK's Amplitube of iPhone here, they address the issue with a "noise filter" effect. All it does is filter out the high end, it isn't noise supression. Amp models sound thin and lack definition. This is just a toy.
If you're looking for an iPhone guitar interface on the cheap, you've found it. If all you want to do is just play quietly, this isn't a bad option. If you're looking for inspiring tones, look elsewhere.

I purchased the iRig to connect my guitar to an iPad for use with IK Multimedia's Amplitube. It works flawlessly. Just plug it in, start the app and you're making music.

I can also use it with my iMac for recording with GarageBand and getting some really great tones with Amplitube 3 amp modeling software.

Note: To use the iRig with an iMac you must plug it into the headphones output, NOT the mic input (if your iMac has one), and set the sound preferences / input for internal microphone. This should also work with most of Apple's newer laptops and Mac Minis.

I returned this device within a few days of buying based on terrible sound quality. The devise produces alot of noise!

I wondered if I had a defective unit but it seems the problem is with the iPad / iPhone headphone circuitry. In the irig forums it was recommended by a company spokesman to upgrade to the HD version as this uses the iPad's or iPhone's digital interface at the bottom of the device for superior "HD" quality.

I certainly recommend this upgrade as well - or to buy another device that uses this digital interface.

I use this with the Amplitube and iRealB apps. It works great for practice as long as you don't set the amplifier app to a high gain setting -- if you do, it will feedback (squeal) like crazy. If you want a high gain sound, just stick a stomp box in line before the input. I got mine as a half-price return/refurb. It's a good deal at half-price.

I don't know about the quality of the product since I never opened the box. Luckily I noticed the list of compatible devices on the box before I opened it so I could easily return it. Nothing in the advertising of this product says anything about the fact that only 2nd gen iPod Touch and above are compatible. Some of the reviews that say this thing doesn't work are probably people who saw that it works with iPod Touch and didn't realize their 1st gen isn't supported. Note to retailers selling this item: Make sure your advertising reflects this fact and you will avoid disgruntled customers and the extra costs of returns.

Some of the best sounding stomp boxes and amp/ cab sims ever to be had from amplitude app.
Great value, it's a steal for the price.

Comments about IK Multimedia iRig - Audio Interface Adapter for iPhone, iPod, iPad:

I play electric acoustic. I wasn't looking for this, it found me I guess but I really like it. It works great for what I want out of it, which is something a little different to jam and enjoy/write. The sound is great, I read a LOT of negative stuff relating to the iPad app and people upset that its not comparing to Jimi's amp .. really? If you're like me .. like to plug in and play, write some tunes and enjoy jamming . .this will work great for you. Cheers.
