Every year I host a three day jam session with old friends and every year we record the event. This last event I used three small recording setups to compare the results - iRig Mic into an iPhone 4S, Sony minidisc with small Sony stereo mic, Tascam DR7 recorder and Tascam mixer with two Rode NT2-A condenser mics. Was very surprised to discover the best recordings were made with the iRig setup, although the tracks were mono. The other systems were stereo, but it didn't make much difference with instruments & PA set up in a lakeside condo with the mics encircled by the various instruments. No true stereo field to capture. Theater in the round, sort of. So if you just want a small rig to capture good fidelity sound, & stereo is not a factor, the iRig Mic & smart phone is the way to go. The more complex the recording rig, the more chances someone will unplug a cable, knock a level control off setting, etc. One phone - one mic. Works great.

My original mic shipped on my purchase was defective and the jack would not plug in correctly to my iPhone, iPad or Mac. Fortunately it was replaced. However I'm still not too happy with is. The free apps that come with it are not intuitive as to how to turn on the monitors and I was not to successful with recording. I did finally get this to work with Garage Band on my PC and got the monitors going after struggling. See I was using the earbuds that came with the iPhone. Seems natural that I would use them because after all I am using apple products (iPhone, iPad, Mac). The sound quality was poor and I could barely hear anything. I then plugged in a common pair of earphones and it worked. I then proceeded to hook it up to some actual speakers and again it worked. Why it would not work with apple earphones or earbuds is beyond me and I'm not happy with that.

Comments about IK Multimedia iRig Mic:
The iRig is a compact and relatively versatile condenser, with a pretty solid construction and an easy-to-use setup. It comes with everything you need to get started, which is great.
The sensitivity switch provides a great deal of variance in how much the mic picks up, though I honestly can't imagine a time when the lowest sensitivity is going to be very useful, unless you want to record a train passing at close range. I tested it from a few inches and yelling into it on the lowest setting sounded like it was really far away.
The medium intensity and high sensitivity settings are great, one recording me well at about four inches from my chin, the other recording me well at about an arms length, though it captured sounds that were feet away.
The microphone's connector didn't fit into my iPhone with the case on, though that's a bit more of a case issue than a microphone issue, though I'm not sure it would have been a bad thing to make the connector a triangle rather than a square, sacrificing a little compactness where it doesn't matter so much for a lot more versatility with the different kinds of cases out there.
Finally, there's a bit of a thing with the "included apps." I didn't really know how that might work, because this was sort of a gift to me, rather than an extensively researched purchase. I kind of thought, in this age of integration, that maybe there'd be a code or something that came with your package that entitled you to get the iRig apps listed on the product page for free or at a discount. Instead, you do get included apps. They are just as free for you as for anyone else.
The light versions of all of the apps are certainly free, and the full versions range from a basic recorder to a little mobile studio and are priced accordingly. Now that isn't really so bad, when you get down to it, but it feels like a gimmick, when it says that apps are included and you don't even get a discount. The apps are available to anyone and everyone, and you don't need the iRig mic to use them.
Essentially, I love the microphone. I even kind of like the apps. I think the microphone is sturdy and that it does a good job of living up to what it says it'll do, especially for the price. The apps are fairly full-featured, and the only issue I really have with them is the way that the advertising worked.
If you are going to do a lot of mobile recording and don't want to shell out for additional gear, and if you have an compatible iPod, iPhone, or iPad, shell out for the iRig.
As a note, the protocol that lets it record using a 1/4 inch jack is being adopted by other device makers. My laptop, for example, uses the microphone just fine. The apps don't make the microphone worth the money, so you could use it with your Android phone, if it'll work, just as well.

Comments about IK Multimedia iRig Mic:
It definitely adds clarity over the built in mic on an iPhone 4. If you need this for a particular purpose like wanting more clarity on recordings for events, interviews, live performances or just an easy way to record at home (assuming you don't already have a way to do that) it seems like a good piece. Easy to plug in and start recording. The apps are limited for the free ones but don't appear particularly hard to get into. Not sure when I'll actually use it beyond my inital testing but I got it at a very reasonable and plan to keep it.

Comments about IK Multimedia iRig Mic:
I got an opened box for a Dal of the Day. I don't know if that affected the mic's performance, but I have difficulty to get it to work with an iPad 4th generation (Retiina display). I have to plug it in and restart the mic in order to get sound from it. I also get a ground noise in the recordings, but I use a noise reduction feature. Other than that, I did good business for a one-day deal.

Comments about IK Multimedia iRig Mic:
Based on the products that are on the market that do what this does, this is the best I've tried. I work at a radio station and am a professional musician. I would never use this on stage. However, comparing ease of use to quality, this is much easier for my salespeople to use to record customer spots via their tablets vs. sending them with a field recorder. It's not a great mic, but it is very capable of doing the mobile recording job with your tablet.

Comments about IK Multimedia iRig Mic:
I purchased this to cover an industry trade show for my blog. I was dissapointed last year with my videos, you couldn't hear anything due to the ambient noise. This, combined with my iPod Touch, made a huge difference! I can hear what is being said and it was very easy to use with the camera software already on the iPod. Just plugged it in and pressed record. At the price of [$] it was a huge improvement and got a lot of compliments!
