Stutter Edit's features revolve around an innovative engine that continuously samples live audio, storing that audio in a buffer that can be manipulated in a myriad of ways.
The key to unlocking Stutter Edit's capabilities is the use of Gestures: a set of effects and their associated timelines that reside on a single MIDI note. The audible result of a Gesture can vary from simple to complex—a Gesture could simply repeat a small chunk of audio at an 1/8-note rhythmic rate, or it could trigger a run of raging glitches that get decimated by a bit crusher before being filtered into a wash of echoes.
Condensing such sonic adventures into a single key press is what makes Stutter Edit so playable, especially with its intelligent sense of timing. Stutter Edit is designed with musicality in mind, which frees you to make wild sounds that still feel like a natural part of your tracks. The Stutter Gestures are as follows:
Repeat audio at a rhythmic note value—create incredible sweeps that transition from one rhythmic value to another.
Choose a note value from 1/4 to 1/1024 for the stutter module to sweep or step between. That's not enough? You can also make your audio repeat at a high enough frequency to turn it into musical pitches.
With Quantize off, Stutter Edit sweeps between note values continuously. With it on, you can create unheard-of stepping effects that transform your audio into complex rolls, trills and even arpeggios.
Use this slick radar screen to choose where Stutter Edit pulls audio out of the buffer. Dice drum loops. Jump between notes in a vocal phrase. You can even randomize playback order for unexpected results.
The dual-channel Delay can slide between 1/8th to 1/64th note rhythmic delay times, flying from a subtle chorus to a springy rubber-band effect. Dedicated resonant band-pass filters provide perfectly tweakable results.

It's obvious that the people that use these types of filters and fx would be drawn to Stutter Edit. I'm thinking of DJs, and dance music producers. But dig a little deeper, keep an open mind and this thing makes a great sound design and underscore tool. That's what I mainly use it for.
Stutter Edit is good for both live and studio production. It also integrates well with DAWs (keep reading).
I can imagine that some less experienced musicians might be intimidated by this plug-in. First, the way it's routed is unique. So unique that a splash screen appears when brought up that asks if you need help with it's routing. It even says it's different in the dialog box. Awesome! Clicking "yes" takes you to their website, and then gives you detailed instructions for your specific DAW. Making your own presets is also quite a creative process.. I recommend playing with the built-in presets to get a feel for how the plug-in works. It becomes clear rather quickly how this thing works.
Once you get it, the application of these bundles of fx are only limited by your imagination. It doesn't have to be used for a specific style of music, and that's the beauty of this thing. You can put any instrument, a sub-group or an entire mix through Stutter Edit and get some great and varied sounds. The results can be very complex, or something as simple as an echo.
I recommend keeping an open mind about it's application. Turn off the modules you don't like and apply the ones you do. Yes, it was created by people like BT who are known for DJ style club music, but this could be used on a metal guitar, a vocal part, a classical violin section, ambient sounds, etc...
When I first saw Stutter Edit my jaw dropped the proverbial floor - instantly seeing the potential in this thing beyond its intended audience. I bought Stutter Edit along with Iris and have made some amazing underscore that would have been very difficult otherwise. I like to create my own sounds, and Stutter Edit is a very powerful tool for that!
Stutter Edit's interface is great, as is the programming. This is a well thought out plug-in.

I just got this program last week and I haven't recorded anything with it yet. But I put some audio loops in Logic and ran through the presets. it's important to note that if you want to process midi software instrument regions in Logic you can do that. Send the desired software instruments to a Bus. That will create a channel strip with the I/O as that Bus. Then create a new software instrument track and make Stutter Edit the instrument. Sidechain it to Bus 1. Voila. This is a cool piece of software. I'm anxious to find out what else it can do!
