Light on weight, heavy on sound with 1000W of bangin' sub-bass boom.

The PRX618S-XLF extended low frequency subwoofer was designed and engineered to provide sub-bass frequencies with accuracy and power. Used as a single sub, in a sub/sat system, or in multiples as part of a scalable, large format sound reinforcement system, the PRX618S-XLF performs with extreme efficiency and control. This sub is stackable and lightweight, ensuring quick setups and teardowns. And, due to its rugged construction, it's perfect for AV rental inventories. With a pole receptacle (that accepts a SS4-BK or SS4-BK24, sold separately) on the top panel and integrated stereo pass-thru, this is the most powerful low-frequency complement to the PRX full-range systems. The addition of a polarity reverse option further enables system optimization.

The PRX618S-XLF is a high performance self-powered subwoofer system. The PRX618S-XLF is comprised of a powerful 2268FF Differential Drive dual voice-coil and magnetic gap, neodymium woofer driven by a 1000W (dual 500W) Crown Class-D power amplifier. Dual-Bridge Technology directly links discrete amplifier channel outputs to each voice coil in the Differential Drive woofer. Electrical power transfer to the transducer is optimized for more power performance. A proprietary DSP chip is at the core of a fully featured input section, providing user selectable cross-over functionality, polarity optimization, protection, dynamic limiting, and discrete component optimization.

The amplifier input panel offers stereo inputs with XLR or 1/4" jack compatibility. A user-selectable crossover ensures a smooth transition to full-range system connected to the stereo outputs. Signal present and limiter lights indicate the system status and assist in setting the optimum level, via the level control knob.

Like all the PRX600 Series cabinets, the PRX618S-XLF is built from a combination of 25mm (on the top and bottom for added rigidity) and 18mm, strong, lightweight poplar plywood made structurally sound with tongue and groove joints. All PRX600 Series cabinets are protected by JBL's tour proven DuraFlex finish. The grille is made from dent-resistant 16-gauge steel and its handles are made from lightweight glass-filled nylon for added strength and durability.

Special note: JBL highly recommends that no more than 70 pounds of weight be placed on a speaker pole that is mounted to a PRX618S or PRX618S-XLF.

Update to previous review - I bought a second PRX618S-XLF

    By Tony Wright

from Stillwater OK, where the wind really does come sweeping down the plains

    Ask me a question

Comments about JBL PRX618S-XLF High Performance 18" Subwoofer System:

I mentioned that I have used my new PRX618S-XLF mated with the previous PRX618S-XLF at an outdoor street festival...here is my review of the performance.

The matched stacks were built on the ground on opposite sides of the stage on a downtown street intersection. Each stack had the JBL PRX618S-XLF on the bottom supporting the low frequencies. On top of the subwoofer, we placed a JBL MRX-525 powered by a Crown XTi-2000 stereo on each subwoofer. On top of those two cabinets (sub and 3 way full range) we placed a third speaker cabinet, a JBL PRX615m. Monitors were six JBL PRX612m. Mixer was a Presonus StudioLive 16.4.2.

After a careful ring out with a RTA and multiple tweaks of the gain structure to get 100% optimal performance, we stepped back to listen to the first of four bands. The kick drum sounded much better than you would have expected with just a pair of subs. The bottom end was full and punchy. Everyone could feel it in their chest. The various musicians waiting their set all commented at how good the system sounded. After their own set, every musician went to the sound crew and complimented them on the quality of their set up.

This was a blended system. I own two PRX68S-XLF, two PRX615m and four PRX612m. The mixer, two of the PRX612m and the two MRX525 with their Crown power amp belonged to another production service. Snake, all mics and DIs and cables belong to me as well...I wish the entire system was mine...maybe someday.

I believe that the MRX525 helped on the low end production by the combined system. The bottom 15 inch woofer is crossed from 300 Hz down to around 50 Hz. So that would have combined with the PRX618S-XLF output nicely.

Sound slightly over a block away sounded just as rich and full as it did standing 60 ft from the stage. Volume had fallen off only slightly. I was very pleased with the rig and would recommend it to anyone.
I am still pleased with the features. I am still disappointed in the front grille. I should note that I used both of my PRX618S XLF at an outdoor street festival and had outstanding results. My previous concern about the fixed 100 Hz crossover have been put to rest. PLENTY of bottom end.
I am still impressed with the quality of the sub. Worked at a street festival with NO problems first gig out of the box.
I believe this subwoofer is perhaps the best active/powered sub on the market today. Lots of low end. Still, it is on the top end of the budget for most users...

USED JBL PRX618S XLF FROM MUSICIAN'S FRIEND

    By Nathaniel Burns

    from Undisclosed

Comments about JBL PRX618S-XLF High Performance 18" Subwoofer System:

This is the fourth subwoofer I have purchased and by far the best. The size is imposing and I wonder if it will fit into the backseat of my car but the weight is very manageable for a single person. My other subs either are not powerful enough, not designed for gigging, or doesn't deliver quality sound.
JBL 618s-XLF and Musician's Friend FTW!
Combo XLR/TRS jacks, stereo inputs, and switchable crossover. I prefer a continuously variable crossover so that I can set the crossover exactly where I want it but i'm reasonably satisfied with the fixed crossover point with crossover switch engaged. Of course the main features of 1000 watts, extra low frequency response, and a 18 inch woofer are what I was looking for and the PRX618s XLF delivers. I immediately played the unit at home and it simply sounds awesome. I couldn't turn it up past 4 o'clock because it easily broke the sound barrier in my apartment. Can't wait to crank it up at gig.
Although used this beast is a beauty! The minor blemishes on the cabinet were exactly as depicted in the pictures on the Musician's Friend website no bait and switch. I played a lot of bass heavy music to test it out and the quality and quantity of bass out of the PRX618s XLF is monumental. I now have enough power and bass in my sound system to challenge any of my mobile DJ friends and even most of the club venues I play in.
Unbelievably great value. I live overseas and although I have access to the military postal system I'm limited to the 70lb maximum weight limit. A friend told me about MF's international shipping and I have to say I'm astonished. MF already reduced the price of the unit by about $200.00 and on top of that international shipping was free! The delivery service provider in country however did charge me about $35.00. Freight charges for this sub runs about $600 dollars on a new PRX618s-XLF so this truly was a fantastic value for me. I was especially surprised that it took only six days from placing the order till the box was at my doorstep.

    Outstanding Tight Low End

Comments about JBL PRX618S-XLF High Performance 18" Subwoofer System:

Overall this product is an incredible addition to any group or DJ service. The only step up would have to be a line array system but that is not normally an option for most groups. The great thing about this box is if you want more low end....just add more speakers, but two will get any group started down the right path. Couldn't be happier!!
The only thing I would have loved to see is that ability to daisy chain your power from cabinet to cabinet, but I imagine that would have involved a little more on the inside and this unit is already pakced full of stuff.
It is built like a truck and the weight is amazing. It can easily be lifted by one person and even carried a fair distance. The sound is amazingly tight and the low end is huge. Our band went from six unpowered EV's subs to 6 powered JBL's and the increase in volume and tightness is noticeable.
Honeslty, they are not a cheap box but what you get for it is incredible. If you want a great low end sound this is the box you want. Small groups could probably get away with 1 of them. In my duo we use two (one per side) along with the single 15 horn powered box. For small to midsize clubs the sound is plenty huge...even big clubs are no problem to fill. Of course you are not going to get the same huge bass sound in a large club that you do in a smaller venue, but if you want more bass add more speakers. Our 4 piece band has six of these babies and it will fill even the largest clubs with plenty of low end. We've combined our systems to run 4 per side and that was enough to make it sound like a professional sound rig in quality and volume. (good sound man required of course)

    PRX618S-XLF, impressive subwoofer system

    By Tony Wright

from Stillwater OK, where the wind really does come sweeping down the plains

    Ask me a question

Comments about JBL PRX618S-XLF High Performance 18" Subwoofer System:

I recently purchased the PRX618S-XLF and I am very pleased with the results thus far. The first set up was a shake down and metered test to see how the cabinet works with a pair of PRX612M.

I have access to a 710 seat theater. We sat the test up with the PRX618S-XLFon one side of the stage with one PRX612M mounted on a pole above the sub, the other PRX612M was on a standard tripod stand on the other side of the stage. Stereo signal was sent via an iPhone into a Mackie DFX-6 mixer and then into the subwoofer (internal xover) and then out to the two main speakers.

We took a lot of effort to set the gain structure correctly so that the input was at 12 oclock gain, channel fader was Unity and the Master Faders were also at Unity. The LED meter for Master Output was solid green, no yellow LEDs. We had the subwoofer's volume running so that it did not hit the peak/clip light.

We were running contemporary dj/club dance mix so we could have some strong low end content. We checked our signal with an RTA on an iPhone, nice, level signal with no spikes...basically a "flat line EQ". We had plenty of low end that you could hear AND feel without any problem. The RTA indicated that the PRX618S-XLF was solid and putting out useable volume and content at 37 Hz and that the internal xover rolled off fairly quickly at 100 Hz.

We stepped out about 40 ft and checked our levels with a dB meter. We were running 107-108 dB nice and solid. (SPL depended on the source music content.) That is plenty loud for most of the live bands I work with inside the local venues. I primarily run live sound, not DJ support, but I used this as a fair evaluation of the PRX618S-XLF.Even so, it was obvious that the two PRX612M could have been pushed to a higher volume, but would have run away from the subwoofer's levels.

There is no question that one subwoofer (all I could afford) will be adequate for my own band and most bands I work with inside local clubs. It will be challenged with and DJ support gigs or outdoor live sound gigs that I might take. There also is no question that two subwoofers would allow the system to reach a higher output as the main could be kicked up to a higher volume.

I know this subwoofer will be a valuable addition to my gear inventory. I hope to pick up a second within a few months.
I am very satisfied with the features of this active subwoofer. My only suggestion might be to have a variable xover frequency. I prefer to cross over at 75-85 Hz. JBL has a fixed 100 Hz xover freq. That said, I did not notice a lot of problems with that. Especially since I mated the single JBL PRX618S-XLF with a pair of PRX612M for "mains" during the test. All other controls and in/out options are clearly marked.

I am NOT a fan of the PRX series multi angle speaker grill. You run the risk of damage to the speaker grill everytime you use the cabinet. Having an extended wooden side of the cabinet with a recessed flat metal grill allows the sides of the cabinet to help protect the lightweight speaker grille. This is a cosmetic issue that does impact the features since damage to the grill due to design flaw is a feature. Lots of the JBL "PRX" and "MRX" and "SRX" products get grill damage.
I previously owned a pair of JBL passive SRX-728S 2-18 subwoofers. The sound quality of the JBL PRX618S-XLF (not volume, but the tonal quality) compares very favorably to the SRX-728S. These cabinets impressed a cynical trio of pro audio sound techs.
Outstanding $$$ value for the equivalent powered/active subwoofers from JBL or other manufacturers. Yes, it is quite a few dollars more expensive than the standard PRX-618S...but there is a reason. It is worth the cost.

    Freakin' Awesome Sub

    By Anonymous

    from Undisclosed

Comments about JBL PRX618S-XLF High Performance 18" Subwoofer System:

I bought this used from Musicians Friend and got a great deal in it. Purely cosmetic damage (one corner had a bruise and the finish was chipped away) saved me $325. This sub has a great musical tone. The built-in crossover works great as well as the dbx Type IV compression. The sub is designed so that it can be used as a single sub in a stereo system. It has both left and right inputs with high pass outputs to go to 2 satellite speakers. I found that the sub outputs a lot more sound when supplied with 2 signals, one signal into the Left input and the other into the Right input. It is supposed to work with a mono signal and sum the inputs together, but my experience was that the output seemed twice as powerful when it was supplied with a stereo signal. Once I connected it this way, and turned up the input level until the red limit LED occasionally flickered on, this monster thumped hard and had a nice pure bass tone to it. I'm using the sub to add bottom end to 2 JBL EON 15s that I have owned for years. It's a killer sounding combination. The other sub that I've used and can compare it to is a Carvin LS-1801NA. The Carvin is a great sub for the money but the bass from it seemed to have a lot of midrange overtones, so the sound from it was muddy. Also, the limiter peaked very easily which made it difficult to utilize the full power from it. My budget would allow for 2 Carvin subs, or 1 JBL sub. I chose the JBL and I'm glad I did. The first thing our drummer said was "the JBL has a more pure bass tone to it" - and I think that sums it up nicely. The JBL just sounds good - like you'd expect from JBL. I realize my comparison is not apples to apples and that the JBL is in a much higher category than the Carvin, but if you're on a tight budget like me, I recommend you get 1 really good sub like this rather than 2 lesser quality subs.
