These little Joe Meek units are pretty cool. The Mic Pre is nice. The compression is a vintage type (optical) and sounds like it. The eq section is VERY phasy. So if you want a special vocal sound, a punchy, rock & roll kind of vocal sound, this unit will deliver with style. On the other hand; don't grab this as your only input for doing multitracks, because while it is very good at separating out an individual performance (vocal or otherwise), if you record all your tracks with this unit your song will start to sound a little strange. Great value for the money. If you're looking for input processing for every track of a multitrack, try one (or two) of those DBX or ART mini-mic pre's wired to an ALESIS, or DBX, or APHEX compressor instead. For Example: the ART OPL is a steal for the price, and the DBX 266XL is cheap and extremely flexible. (don't forget the wires when comparing prices) Joe Meek makes good-sounding reliable units, and this one is no exception. They are just a bit specialized.

The pre-amp side is fair, low noise. Without the tube it just doesn't "help" the signal, merely boosts it. The parametric EQ is is really nice and helps shape your sound. However, the compressor section is somewhat cheesy and performs no better than my 3630 Alesis. Having only one channel also limits options. I run a studio and used this unit on all instruments and vocals in a recent session in an attempt to test the unit. I ran guitars, keyboards and a drum machine directly through it to tape. Overall, I really like the EQ section, but the pre-amp and compressor really let me down.

I've owned two of these (JoeMeek ThreeQ) for years. I've used them for recording vocals, bass and acoustic guitar. It's great for bass, good for vocals and okay for acoustic guitar. I've also used them in live performances. It works killer for bass. currently I'm using one with my Sennheiser in-ear monitors, the compressor really saves my ears from sudden peaks. although it works great in live applications, the connectors are flimsy and I HATE wallwart power supplies so put it in a rack if you can. As far as features, it has everything it claims, it does what it claims and at a good price. It would be nice to be able to adjust the comp ratio but other than that, it's great.

it has its applications. I sometimes freelance doing voiceovers for training cd's. This is the unit I use for recording these jobs. Very natural sounding for the 1spoken voice. I also use it for some music vocals and insurment miking. But it may not work in all applications. But for the money it has been great! I also got a free JM-27 condenser mic with it when I bought it. And I am using them now to record percussion. My only complaint is the cool looking blue led that shows the compressor is enabled has burnt out.

I own some very high end preamps and I also own a lot of budget pres. This is by far the best budget pre I've ever owned. It stacks up extremely well in a mix and the eq and comp are very useful. Of all the budget channel strips this is one everyone should consider or at least try it.

If you are on a constrained budget in your home studio endeavors, this piece is a great addition in lieu of buying Drawmer or Focusrite channels. I haven't used it on vocals yet, but I am game! For guitars, it works great and is a piece of cake to use, I know only that much right now. For the price, you can't beat it. You will not be doing Pink Floyd recordings with it, but what do you want for the price?

The good news on this product is the mic pre. It's clean and responsive, a definite step up from the PreSonus BlueTUBE (which is barely worth the price I paid for it) that it's sitting underneath. It doesn't seem to have quite the headroom of a nice pro-level pre and it can start to sound a little strained a fair bit before it says it's clipping, but watch your levels and you'll be fine.The bad news is the compressor: first, BEWARE, the compression ratio is fixed at 5:1. Had I known this, I wouldn't own it now. Beyond that, I don't particularly care for the sound of this compressor, even when 5:1 happens to be about where I would have set it. There's a certain harshness that's hard to put my finger on, a certain edge. Still, the compressor might be good enough to be useful for a bit of light peak reduction, I suppose.That being said, I must at least give them credit on the compressor for adding the coolest looking shade of blue indicator light you've ever seen...

Has a cheasy feel to it and sounds awful. The preamp has a very tinny sound to it. Compressor isn't smooth and EQs are what you'd find on a low level board. Connectors at the back move around when you plug into it. It's pretty noisy when using all three stages.

This compressor is a well kept secret among engineers and such. In studios that have big dollar stuff, somehow joe meek always makes its way in with the big boys. This pre-compressor will add some gloss you have been seeking. I'd rather keep it a secret, but in the interest of decent sounding indie music, the cat's out of the bag. Buy it!

this product blows away many preamps costing much more. you won't be disappointed. it works awesome on my ribbon mics and makes a guitar into pro tools sound like it went to tape.

The set-up and features of this unit were exactly what I was looking for, and I had heard great things. The eg was ok, but before long I realized the pre was grainy and brittle. The compressor was the real disappointment. Even the smallest gain reduction yielded unacceptable results for my acoustic style music.
