Remember what these are designed to do: Close monitoring during Live Performance.

When I first received these little things and set them up for a test I was appalled at the high shrilly and somewhat harsh sound that came out. Immediately I considered sending them back. I'm not sure what I was expecting even knowing that the frequency response doesn't go below 130 Hz. So I borrowed the band's measuring EQ and matching measuring Mic to examine it. The response is as claimed by Kustom with a dip in response at around 1250 Hz. After the measurement I decided to wait until I used these at a live performance with the band to make a decision about them knowing there would be plenty of bass coming from FOH.

I set this monitor up on a mic stand about 3 ft from my head to the left side of me. I play keys and sing backup. I made the mistake of plugging the monitor mix into the XLR Mic Input at first since we were in a hurry to set up and I couldn't find the right adapter. This was a BIG mistake since the speaker would distort and the volume level was impossible to control. However, once I got the Line Level signal plugged into the 1/4 in input everything was fine. More than enough power was available. I never had to turn up more than half way. I'm in a Funk band with 2 guitarists, bassist, drummer, Sax, Trumpet, and myself, and I was set up next to both guitarists' amps.

The sound was perfectly fine for monitoring Live because the bass all comes from the Front Of House main speakers, so the sound is not shrilly and harsh during monitoring. Besides, you don't want to send any low frequencies back to your monitors anyway or you'll get feedback.

Speaking of feedback... I only got some once during 2 45min sets. The cause was a combination of cheap microphone and poor placement of monitor in relation to the direction of the Mic. The monitor was being pulled by the input cable because I was too far from the snake, so it turned slightly to point almost directly at the mic and of course I got some feedback. I don't see why anyone would have anymore problems with feedback from this monitor than any other monitor. Feedback generally occurs from incorrect monitor placement and or poor monitor mixes (do not send the FOH mix back to monitors).

I bought two of these thinking I might be able to make a true stereo keyboard amp on the cheap. Maybe I still can with a powered subwoofer, but in reality these are only good for what they're designed for: CLOSE STAGE MONITORING.

As an afterthought, these may be good for small meetings where you need to boost your voice some to address a small crowd. Especially since bass is not helpful for intelligibility of voice/spoken word. You may sound a bit nasally through this though. I have not used this with a mic plugged directly in. If I get a chance I'll update this review.

I purchased this in the hopes of being able to do a simple foldback mix for my folk trio. When we have to supply our own sound (non-Festival gigs, etc) we usually are on smaller stages, where a pair of 12" powered mains on poles are all that really fit, which mean we have to try to position them to provide a bit of monitoring without causing feedback on our three acoustic instruments. We are 3 vocals, guitar, violin and mandolin.
I really liked the size and it seemed like a really well built little box, though I don't like the fact that you can't put a boom mic stand on top of it like you can the Galaxy and Mackie versions. That would mean we'd need to take along an extra mic stand and find room for it; still easier than finding room for a 10" floor monitor though.
We use an A&H Zed 10FX which has a single AUX send with no EQ capabilities on the AUX send. To test it out, I hooked up my guitar and mic into the A&H and didn't power up our EV mains, but sent the AUX send out via TRS ¼" into the Kustom. The EQs on the channels were still set from our last rehearsal so they are where we'd want them to gig with. With those settings, anything below my A string (110Hz) on my Martin OOO caused an odd distortion sound, even with the volume on the Kustom at only about 25%. My voice (baritone/bass range) did the same thing down in that range. To eliminate the distortion, I was able to dial back all the bass on my channel EQs. This allowed me to get the little Kustom up to usable volumes and it didn't actually sound that bad. With the EQs set like that though, when I powered up our EV 12's obviously there was no bottom end and it sounded horrible in the house mix.
If I had a mixer setup that had separate EQ for the monitor mix, I think this would be a usable box, but then if our mixer setup was that capable, we'd probably be playing big enough stages where we'd just use floor monitors.
I also tried running my guitar and mandolin through my PZ-Pre preamp straight into the XLR input on the Kustom. Same situation with the guitar where I had to dial back all the bass to keep it from distorting on anything lower than my A string. The Mandolin didn't have that problem being voiced higher than the 110Hz range.
You could probably use a High Pass Filter instead of a multi-band EQ, but it would still be a pain to need an extra device to make it usable. I'm now trying to decide between the Mackie and the Galaxy, both of which have built in EQ.

Comments about Kustom PA Kustom KPC4P Powered Monitor Speaker:

It's not a P.A. so if you think you can plug a mic in it with out a Preamp,Mixer,or vocal processor you are using it wrong.Used right it is amazing. So is its big brother.I used almost every type of Monitor. The last one was a TC.At three times the price and it failed, and did not sound as good. Its made to cut through the mix,So it a bit sharp but when a full band, Rock band, is behind you it dose it's job in spades. Well worth it's piece plus some.

For their size they perform well. I bought them to use as main speakers when my wife and I sing at a small venue. (I have larger equipment for larger venues.) Next weekend I plan to use them as monitors at a small outdoor venus. So far they work very well.

I am an accordion player in an Irish band. I was looking for a monitor that would work with my accordion. So the price was right. It has great sound for a small thing. It is pretty small, but has big sound.

Using as a monitor with Fishman Loudbox Artist solo acoustic performer amp. Loudbox had xlr output jack for line level out. Because the xlr input on the Kustom unit is for a low level mike input, I needed to use an attenuator here to take the line level output from the amp. With the attenuator, everything worked very well. Overall, a good buy for this application. I'm happy.

I have purchased several Kustom PA speakers and monitors these past few years from Musician's Friend and although they are not top-of-line as some might say, they have never failed me or my liver performances, so it was only natural that I would give this little self-powered monitor a chance. I used it already on one Live gig, two rehearsals and now as a recording monitor. My friend loved it so much he ordered two! Can't wait t get my next one!

I am a guitarist who uses this monitor at church with one out on my pre-amp to the monitor and one out to the board. I was initially concerned regarding the sound level/tone that I would get out of this small monitor. It has a small footprint and setting it close, it works a treat. Just what I needed. I think playing with a full band at stage levels would be too much for it but for small and lower level venues, this product works well.
