I was asked for a recommendation of a hardware and software combination for a friend whose 12-year-old son is into keyboards, and wants to enter the world of recording. Here is my note, verbatim:
If you buy the Lexicon Alpha system, the Alpha hardware comes bundled with a free version of Cubase LE. This is high quality software, and not any harder to learn than Garage Band. The Alpha plugs into the USB jack on the PC. It also works with a Mac, and Garage Band. Right now, it's on sale; it has all kinds of inputs & outputs, and records 2 channels at once. It can record stereo from the keyboard, or mono from a guitar and a microphone simultaneously. The mic channel has 2 inputs (phone jack or XLR style). If he ever upgrades to a serious recording mic, he will need a 48V phantom power supply.. but these don't cost much, nowadays. I bought the Alpha system about 6 months ago, and it's great. With my laptop PC I've made several multitrack recordings already with it. Didn't take that long to figure everything out. Bonus... It actually doubles as an interface for a good stereo (goodbye to the headphone jack). It has very good A-to-D converters (24-bit 48 KHz) so you can plug it into a real audiophile system. This feature alone makes it worth the investment... all my music on the laptop now goes thru the Alpha to a nice pair of studio monitors I bought. Music sounds phenomenal. For the price (at the moment, very nicely discounted) you can't go wrong. There are tons of "How To" videos on YouTube about how to use an Alpha with a Mac, or a PC. Turns out it also works on an iPad. Garage Band is simple enough for a 12 year old, but baffling to most of our generation. If you have a Mac or an iPad, I'd stick with Garage Band. If you have a PC, Use the Cubase! And give my best to the budding musician. Tell him to remember us fondly when he's famous.

I purchased one of these about a year ago, and have regretted it ever since. When in 48 KHz mode, it randomly emits an obnoxiously loud white noise, making this mode completely unusable. Of course, it took me about two months to discover that the alpha was actually my problem. Since then, I have consistently used it at 44.1 KHz, which eliminated the obnoxious sounds. However, latency is a major issue - I have to make my buffer size extremely large to avoid getting the system overload error, something I never get when using the cheap interface that came with my Behringer MIDI controller. On top of those issues, I ALWAYS have some amount of ground hum, even if I manually ground the alpha to the device I'm using. Highly disappointed.

Comments about Lexicon Alpha USB Desktop Recording Studio:

Purchased brand new almost 2 years ago. Consistently emits a really bad noise around 5khz, 7khz and 10khz since day one. Noticeable on clean channels, gets worse as gain turns up. Makes recording/mixing very difficult. Changed every wire/electronic on guitar, new 1/4" cables, positioned interface away from other electronics, but the noise is still audible from both "instrument" and "line 1" inputs.
              No phantom power
Easy to use controls, and cubase le 5 is great to learn around your first DAW.
              Not worth its going msrp.
