I bought this because my local music store ran out of the ART 4 channel headphone amp equivalent in the same price range. I read one good review of the guy who A/B'd this vs the ART model so I thought I would give it a shot (very few reviews for this Livewire HA204 unit online). I did not have a chance to use the ART amp so I cannot comment on how this one performs against that or any other similar unit. But I'm using this with an Apogee Duet 2. Previously I was using a Y-cable/splitter to connect 2 sets of headphones to the Duet 2. I wasn't getting as much volume as I wanted, although the clarity was pretty much there. I was afraid a lesser quality headphone amp would diminish the sound quality. So I took a chance on this unit and all I can say is so far so good. I have not noticed a difference in the sound quality from the Duet 2, however I am getting more gain/volume/boost than before, which is exactly what I wanted. If you're running more than one pair of headphones with your DAW and you're not getting enough volume or only have one headphone output, this is a good choice. You can individually control the levels of 4 sets of headphones, which is nice.

The only drawback is that I don't really know what I'm doing with the inputs of the unit from the headphone output of the Duet 2. The front of the headphone amp has one 1/4" stereo input (unbalanced), and on the back there are two 1/4" mono left/right (balanced) inputs. What I have done is run an RCA cable with standard left/right male connectors on one end, and 1/8" male connector for the other end. Basically the same type of cable you would use to connect your iPod to an aux in on a stereo or mixer, etc. I've got a 1/4" adapter so that I can plug into the headphone out of the Apogee Duet 2, and 2 mono 1/4" RCA adapters on the other end of my RCA cable to run into the back of the unit. I was afraid that the RCA cable would be "unbalanced" and cause a sound problem, but so far it is working fine.

I will have to investigate a bit more to see what the best option is for connecting from the Duet 2 into the headphone amp. Just thought I would point that out in case anybody else has that same issue. I'm not well schooled on balanced/unbalanced cabling so I had to improvise, but I will try to contact Apogee and Livewire directly to get that clarified.

Comments about Livewire 4-Channel Headphone Amplifier:

I don't normally do reviews but this one is well worth a review. It gets very loud without distorting. I needed it primarily for boosting the signal to my headphones and its just a plus that it has 4 outputs. It takes 1/4" for everything so make sure you have adaptors handy if you need it. I litterally only turn this thing a little more than halfway up and it is crystal clear and push my Dre Beats and my AKG's with ease.

I ordered this and the ART HeadAmp4's at the same time to do a side by side comparison. If the ART 4's boost the signal to 170% of the orignal signal then these boost it to about 300%. They get way louder and has an on/off button if you care about that and the ART doesn't. The 20 price difference is well worth it. Nothing negative to say about these. I would not hesitate buying another one if I needed to.

Comments about Livewire 4-Channel Headphone Amplifier:

I was looking for a good headphone amplifier to boost the output from my computer and provide additional jacks for the desktop speakers and the occasional extra listener. This amp works great, nice clean sound, and provides plenty of volume. The lighted on/off switch is handy and the volume controls feel smooth and solid. It took a little searching to find a decent male 3.5mm to 1/4" TRS cable to connect my computer to the unbalanced input, but it was worth the effort. (My original 3.5mm plug w/adapter cable was too noisy.)

The only thing that it is missing for my purposes would be 3.5mm jacks on the front of the unit to make it a little easier to add/remove headphones. Other than that, no complaints.

Comments about Livewire 4-Channel Headphone Amplifier:

This headphone amp has more power, clarity and versatility than any I've used and more than any HP output from my audio interfaces or mixers. Almost certainly the best in its cost range.
The sound is big, full and clearly detailed - I have not noticed any distortion or coloration.
The balanced inputs on the back allow you to create a separate HP mix in your DAW or mixer rather than just duplicating the mix from another HP output, but you can still do that with the input on the front.
          The unit feels solidly built.
Be careful of your hearing - with an amp this powerful and clear, your ears can get used to the sound and it can be tempting to turn it up higher and higher.

The volume and sound quality for the price is freaking crazy. I got this on sale and was shocked at how loud this thing is and the high quality of the passed signal for the price. Deaf drummers won't need half of the gain. I'd do this again in a heart beat.
