OVERVIEW

High-speed 8 x 8 USB 2.0 audio interface with 8 Octane preamps and MX Core DSP

Designed for comprehensive studio work, the Fast Track Ultra 8R audio/MIDI interface delivers 8 x 8 I/O, high-speed USB 2.0 connectivity, MX Core DSP mixing/effects, and eight preamps with award-winning Octane technology. Record drum kits and full bands on all eight inputs simultaneously in 24-bit/96kHz fidelity. The onboard MX Core DSP mixer processes eight hardware inputs and eight software returns to the eight hardware outputs, expanding the total I/O to an impressive 16 x 8 configuration. It also delivers flexible routing and monitoring with delay and reverb. Its reliable, low-latency M-Audio drivers and compatibility with most major recording software allows you to put the Fast Track Ultra 8R at the core of your powerful project studio in a single rack-mount unit.

High-speed USB 2.0 Technology
The Fast Track Ultra 8R utilizes high-speed USB 2.0 technology to deliver the bandwidth for 24-bit/96kHz audio resolution throughout the recording and monitoring process. With a maximum data transfer speed of 480Mbps, this jump in performance allows you to enjoy outstanding sound quality on all inputs and outputs simultaneously.

Built-in Effects Processing
Tired of tracking vocals and instruments dry because plug-in effects introduce too much latency? Fast Track Ultra 8R features MX Core DSP technology to give you reverb and delay on the headphone outputs with separate sends for every channel. Now you can inspire creativity by adding effects without taxing your CPU's resources.

Make the Connection
The Fast Track Ultra 8R was designed to provide all the I/O you need for a project studio. Eight channels of analog inputs and outputs plus 2-channel digital S/PDIF provide input flexibility with room to grow. Unlike most USB interfaces, it features two dedicated analog inserts on the first two channels, allowing you to insert outboard processing before A/D conversion. Easy connection via USB 2.0 delivers both audio and MIDI communication with your computer. The unit is compatible with most major audio software and seamlessly integrates into any studio setup.

MX Core DSP technology for sophisticated channel routing
This interface makes it easy to create multiple monitor mixes when recording other musicians. The robust MX Core mixer employs an array of eight individual DSP cores to deliver near-zero latency and a matrix for sophisticated channel routing options, all accessible via an intuitive control panel that utilizes a separate mixer for each pair of outputs. The mixer expands the total I/O to an impressive 16 x 8 configuration, allowing you to connect synths and outboard gear to any of the interface's hardware inputs, then mix them with the eight audio streams coming from your computer.

Eight Professional Preamps with Octane Technology
The quality of your recordings is only as good as the initial signal. The Fast Track Ultra 8R features four preamps with multi-award-winning M-Audio Octane technology, creating a premium front end that delivers your audio clarity. You get professional, low-noise, high-gain preamplification with enough channels for a variety of miking applications. Features include +48V phantom power for condenser mics, signal/peak LED indicator lights, and a pull-out gain knob that activates a 20dB pad for recording at high volumes.

Dual Headphone Amp
Whether you usually track vocals or an ensemble, you're likely to need multiple headphone mixes. Fast Track Ultra 8R has two completely independent headphone outputs so you can take advantage of the DSP mixer's powerful routing options and create the right mix for your performers, complete with reverb and delay.

This unit is awesome. I have windows 7 (64-bit) and Sonar 8. I had no problem at all getting the fast track working. I had zero latency, which I didn't expect. There was no driver issues! The hybrid inputs are helpful and the channels are quiet. I've recorded 8 tracks at a time and they come in beautiful. There are no cracks or weird noises. The on screen mixer is really helpful to monitor everything that's coming in. I'm really happy with this. The only complaint I have is that the master output & individual headphone mixes don't give out as much gain as I'd like them to.

I bought this appliance in August 2008, I am very satisfied with the sound resources specialy for the preamp. I use it for my studio until last week, suddenly when I want to turn it on the power lamp is blink and since then my fast track can not be recognized in any system (I've tried it on five different computer systems) . the device is ok, I use it in same room, same system, same electrical resource for almost 2 year but the only problem is not working USB port. I've tries to find the problem and fix it under the direction of M-Audio site but there are no any changes. From the description of the problem is that I get at the hardware and need to be fixed by M-Audio. I am a user of Indonesia, I bought this unit from M-Audio's official website, in other words, this unit comes from the USA and the official warranty is no longer valid because I use it almost for 2 years. I tried contacting M-Audio to obtain additional information, but I was directed to contact the local distributor (in Indonesia). I have contacted the distributors that existed at the M-audio website but no answer until now. Now I do not know where and how to fix it. so in my opinion is this unit good enough to be applied but not for long-term project. The hardware quality not so good very risky for long-term use and the service center was not helpful.

Worth a second look

Reasons why this is good unit:1) USB tends to be more dependable and universally adaptable (fewer card & driver issues)2) USB 2.0 is actually faster than firewire, so lower latency3) more affordable than comparable firewire units4) M-Audio quality + great tech support and driver updatesNegatives:1) no separate, dedicated main outs (use outs 1/2)2) no separate, dedicated SPDIF in (use ins 7/8)3) headphone outputs are too low (an amp is almost necessary for normal levels)On the whole, excellent. I'm so glad I sent the MOTU back and got this instead. . .

High Quality multi-tracking

By Anonymous

from Undisclosed

This thing is a dream come true. The preamps are super quiet and perfect detail. I use it with a 2 mxl990s, 2 SM57s and a beta 52a on my kick drum. It handles all the mics perfectly and provides phantom power for the condensers. I've tracked up to 6 tracks at once. The built in reverb is great on your vocals when you are tracking. I use it on a dual core machine running vista and have had not had any problems with latency.

Apparently Great Interface

I got the Fast Track Ultra 8R because I needed something that was USB. This had all the features I was looking for. The two headphone outputs are very convenient. The setup was quick and easy and was making recordings quickly. I did have some mystery noise problems but found that disabling everything but the DAW software, and minimizing the control panel took care of that. The sound is clean and internal effects on the monitoring is nice for vocal recording without taxing the CPU. Monitoring control panel not that intuitive and device set up with Cubase is troublesome and needs to be re-setup with every session. So far it does all that it says but the jury is still out.

Great Machine

I did a lot of reviewing of this product and many brands in the same catagory. Always came back to the Fast Track. I use a Vista 32 bit XPS laptop with this unit and it has performed beyond my expectations. Install did take a little while, and one phone call to support. The support center handled my questions great and got me going. I am a metal drummer running 8 mics through this machine and it records and playsback flawlessly! Be aware 1/4" mic cables do not run through the preamps. My old digital recorder used 1/4" but I bought all new mic cables because the preamps on this machine are super sweet. I was nervous if I was going to kick myself for not going firewire with the 2626 but so far the only drawback difference is you can't link multiple machines to get more than 8 independent tracks. The USB 2.0 is running perfect, no pops or hesitaions, super clean. But I also would suggest for optimum performance through USB and recording with this unit, make sure your computer is up to par. For the price and features this unit is awesome.

Thank god for this machine.

I bought this unit about 10 months ago and it was a great decision. With USB 2.0, it's cheaper than firewire, so score there. I have a mac so this thing was up and running in minutes. The pre-amps in this thing are killer. Some of the cheaper interfaces skip out and give you cheap pre amps to save green, but these things are ridiculously good. I did have to sent mine in to get replaced, but that was my own fault and M-audio shipped me a new one very quickly. Totally recommended from both a musician and beginning engineer.

Good Stuff!

It's a great product. I only want to say you CANNOT daisy chain or use more than one at a time. If you need more than eight channels, maybe recording a live session with drums and various instruments for example, this interface is very limiting. I've used it everyday for a year now with no issue but this limitation. I am unfortunately going to have to switch to the presonus firepod so I can run 16 channels simultaneously.

Crackling Issues

By Scottenj

from Georgetown, MA

See all my reviews

I did a lot of reserach before buying this. I needed something that worked with USB, I wanted 8 and a specific feature set and this had it all. When it arrived I was impressed with the build qualiy and the premaps are quiet. Unfortunately I could not make it record without crackling. There are many articles in their knowledge base and forums about crackling so this is apparently a very common problem. I tried everything they list and two diffent notebook computers but couldn't make it work. Thankfully Muscian's Friend took it back no problem.
