I bought these as an upgrade to my shure E3s. The sound quality is amazing compared to the shure buds... very clear... you can hear every nuance. This is probably because the M-audio is a triple driver bud... and the Shures are a single driver bud.The problem with these buds is that they are enormous. They are more then twice the size of the E3s. I used them at one gig and returned them the next day. I tried every tip but none of them seem to fit my ears comfortably. Everytime I opened my mouth to sing... the seal broke and the buds practically fell out of my ear.Overall... great sound... but unless you have an abnormally large ear canal... you're not gonna like these buds. They do not fit comfortably.
I have owned Shure E-3's, E-4's, and E-5's. I thought there was no other in ear that could touch the E-5's. Boy was I wrong!! The Ie-40's blow them away in quality. I myself am a drummer that relys on that bottom end in my head from a monitor mix. I could not believe the clarity and definition that these buds have. I am on the road all the time and run them through an Aviom unit. This product is well worth the money and the quality. I haven't any problems with them falling out as others were saying. The buds that came on them fit perfect. If those didn't there are several others that will (included). If they dont, you dont have a normal ear! Absolutley Amazing!! Wish I would have know about them before I sunk $$$ in the E-5's! There is no other In-ear Period!!!
I play keyboards at my local church. I use a Hammond XK-3 for organ sounds and a Kurzweil PC1X for everything else. The church recently purchased the Hear Back System for on-stage monitoring. They had some Etymotic Research ER-6i earbuds for everyone's use. I found that I could not hear the low end of the Hammond organ with those earbuds no matter how what I did. I tried one of the Shure earbuds (don't remember which one) and it was a little better. So for a while I used a set of Sennheiser HD 280 PRO headphones. These worked great but the choir director was upset with me because he did not like the "look" of the musicians with headphones on. He thought that it made us look like we were in a recording studio. So then I purchased the IE-40's. They solved the problem. I can hear the low end pretty well and the sound in the mid and high end is excellent. It is very important to get a good tight fit with these earbuds or else the low frequencies just seem to be gone. I am still experimenting to find the best size of tips that work best for my size of ear. The band plays in a church that is a large room with no accoustic treatment. Needless to say, sound bouncing around the room is a huge problem especially when there is a full choir. All this to say, I wish the folks at M-Audio could get about 6dB more of isolation with these earbuds. I also wish they would make the left and right indicator marks larger or use colored markings on these buds so that I can easily see which is left and which is right. Overall, a great product and worth the high price.
The best commercially available in-ear monitors in the industry, OEM counterpart to the Ultimate Ears Triple.fi monitors, (if you dont know them, you shouldn't be looking at these headphones) they are literally the same meaning if this is University, Shure headphones are Kindergarden materials. Unmatched audio reproduction. Period. Anything better than this will be custom made, and costs at least twices as much. It is pricey. Well worth EVERY PENNY. I take it with me on my MP3, with my laptop, on my click, everywhere. You will not regret if you spend this money, and never look at in-ear monitors again.
Gonna keep this as simple as i can. I have been playing drums and singing in club bands for over 20 years. The new group decided to go with a drum booth to allow the singers to hear better and to improve the overall sound of the band through the PA. Both goals were acheived, but i had to upgrade my in-ear monitors because all of the instruments and vocals are now in my mix. These buds are pricey, but their frequency reproduction capabilities are unmatched. I spent two nights making adjustments to my in-ear "mix" but by the 3rd set of night 2 it was PERFECT..! I could hear everything everyone was playing and singing, including myself..! This is why the "pros" always sound so good, they can hear what they are doing..!!! If you are serious about your live performances, buy a set of these. If your not serious, you are wasting your time looking at these and reading this review.
All you need to know is these will blow ANY generic or custom mold away (except the Ultimate Ears UE-11, who makes these, the only difference is these are the generic "one size fits all" version of their UE-10 Pro, which of course is always better as a custom mold which I have but these are the same drivers as those and are better than ANY monitor company out there guaranteed!). The only reason these say M-Audio is because that is the company who does the global distribution for UE's Super Fi line.At any rate if you want quality for your in ear system, sell or throw away the buds that come with it (even if they are E5s) and get these (that is if you can't afford the UE custom mold, otherwise get the custom pair from UE - who makes the UE10 Pros with the same components but in the color choice you like and molded to your ear).Hope that helps potential buyers.
I had the shure E3's and I thought that they sounded awesome; boy was I wrong. I have bose earphones and I compared them to the IE 40's and they sounded exactly the same. I am the lead singer for my band and Let me say the triple driver is genious! I can hear my self perfectly and the bass and bass drum is just so warm. I love them. Although they are a little pricey they are worth it. I got my whole band hooked!
If you can afford these, buy them. If you cannot, start saving and then buy them. Music through these is exactly as it should be, perfectly balanced with exquisite detail. I have heardnothing better.
