These are NOT high end monitors. I'm not saying that you shouldnt get these, but I am saying you should know exactly what you're getting. There is a reason these are cheaper than most of the monitors on the market. So first, let's look at the design. These monitors share a single amplifier, which is the left per usual. The right monitor is a slave. A good set of monitors will be independently amplified. Why? Because among other things, it changes the dynamics of each speaker to have one with 'x' amount of weight and space taken up by an amplifier. Therefor each speaker will react a little differently, so your stereo imaging wont be nearly as great, as well as your frequency responses. Another aspect is the drivers are only 4.5" big, which makes it harder for the speakers to reproduce low frequencies. It can still do it, but not with amazing clarity as the speaker it self is moving too fast to be accurate. The lower the frequency, the more it has to work, the more it works, the more the cone becomes mishapen and distorts. Okay so enough of why they're bad, lets move on to why theyre good. First, the price, these are extremely cheap in terms of monitors. Second, features. Even most high end monitors wont have the features these do, its nice having a headphone out, aux out, multiple ins, and a bass boost. Bit of warning however, the headphone out is a little noisy. Its fine for tracking though. They dont take up too much space, which is nice in a lot of applications. I bought these as a spare set of monitors, and I was pretty impressed with them. I expected something much much worse. I mostly use these to track when Im going mobile, and as a keyboard amp. These are fantastic for both of those situations. So first rule of buying equipment, know what youre getting! I'm an engineer and I've purchased more gear than Id like to think about. Whenever I had buyers remorse, it always came down to the fact that I didnt know what I was getting and I wasnt getting somthing that fit my situation. For the money, these are good enough that you wont have buyers remorse.

I'm not gonna give some bull about how these are "great for the money". When people say that it usually means they don't know what quality actually is, or they don't want to remind themselfs it actually sucks. These speakers are decent for casual listening, and thats it. I've been mixing on a regular pair of consumer grade mid-level home entertainment speakers. Not pro audio by any means but at least it translates fairly accurately across systems, and doesn't give you massive ear fatigue after an hour or two.

I got these speakers not expecting much, but I needed something to take to college with me so I could listen to music and do a little audio production on the side. I obviously didn't want to take my best gear with me, so I've bought a lot of cheaper stuff, like these AV40's. I hooked them up in my studio to check out what everything sounded like and wow...somewhere in the expensive price range its just painful. I am impressed by how loud these things can get, and how much bass they pack however. They're useable...but if you want monitors for your studio (especially if you wanna make the jump from something low end like stereo system speakers) save your money, and buy something good like KRK Rokits, the higher end M-Audio Studiophiles, or even some Yamaha's...but save yourself the headaches (litterally) and stay away from these if you plan on doing any sort of audio production.
The bass boost actually surprised me...it really makes these things bump. Its got some various inputs, alright I guess. I thought it was kinda cool that the volume knob glows brighter and you turn them up.
No opinion since I haven't had them that long (less than 5 months) but so far...no problems.
While there isn't a whole lot in the monitor department in this price range...these are hardly worth the money in my opinion.

Comments about M-Audio Studiophile AV 40 Powered Reference Speaker System – Pair:

I'd give them a seven, but only because you can't expect more for what they are. They are a passable set of secondary nearfields at a good price point.
These have a lot of options for imput, bass boost, and volume control for such an inexpensive speaker. I was surprised actually.
I've had mine for three years now, and they still put out pretty decent. Now, these aren't my main monitors, but They give you a good idea what music will sound like on the average stereo system. They trail off around 150Hz, and tend to make vocals stand out a bit (3k bump?), but not too shabby.
For the price, they are a little better than what you would expect. Keep in mind the speakers cone is only 4 inches, so it won't be the most accurate on low range, but for the price, not too bad.

Comments about M-Audio Studiophile AV 40 Powered Reference Speaker System – Pair:

I was looking to produce stuff at home (i'm a radio dj and yes mom is very proud) without waiting for a prod room at work. I've always hemmed & hawed at buying anything too expensive just for occasional use at home. But paired with a voice processor i also recently bought from here, these are awesome! Very accurate on bass even with bass boost off and these make my commercials & sweepers sound the way they do at the station on the big expensive stuff (well, impressively close to it anyway). Inaccurate level mixing has always been a problem with lower-end equipment, and i couldn't be happier with these pure sounding babies, especially at that price.

Comments about M-Audio Studiophile AV 40 Powered Reference Speaker System – Pair:

I have never heard any studio monitors near this price, powered or unpowered, that are as acoustically accurate as these puppies. On top of using them in my home studio, I plugged in my Palm Pre 3G phone using Pandora and the AV40's wake up the sonic clarity of the songs. I hooked them up to a DVD player at work to present a video to the sales staff of 25. There were more comments about the sound quality than the product presentation itself!

Accurate and Awesome Price

Comments about M-Audio Studiophile AV 40 Powered Reference Speaker System – Pair:

I wanted some monitors for a project studio in my bedroom, and these were some of the first ones I looked at, mainly because of the price. I believe their price is exceptional for the quality of sound that comes with these. They seem very flat sounding to me, but my experience is very minimal. Their bass response is very clear. My friends come in my room and think I have a sub-woofer under my desk, but I don't! I can sense my mixes having much better quality from now on because of these beauties.Well worth it.

Comments about M-Audio Studiophile AV 40 Powered Reference Speaker System – Pair:

I use these monitors for checking mixes that I do on some Mackie HR 824's which I've successfully used for many years. I have both sets of monitors slightly EQ'd a couple of dB in places. I also have the AV40's connected to my PC for download listening, for convenience and for much better sound than any PC speakers I've ever heard. These AV 40's are really very good, within their limitations. The bass response is excellent. Even though the specs show that they don't go really low, the kick drum and bass are clearly differentiated. The sound stage is really good as well. The main limitation is that the "sweet spot" is really small. You have to position these monitors exactly right, directly at ear level, and then you have to lock your butt in that defined equilateral triangle position. If you move a couple inches, the tonal balance changes noticeably. The manual that comes with the speakers has great diagrams, which you should follow. That said, the speakers sound amazingly good. If you want a set of monitors with a wider sweet spot, you'd probably have to spend at least 2-3 times as much on some KRK's or something.

The speakers sounded great out of the box, but after a couple months they started distorting, and the right side's volume cut in half. They were never moved and were used very lightly for in home recording. Avoid this product.

Comments about M-Audio Studiophile AV 40 Powered Reference Speaker System – Pair:

So far I'm on my second pair of these. The first pair I got I only had for 3 months, but then they started making a sizzling sound and they clearly smelled like they were burnt to a crisp on the inside. So, I contacted M-Audio and after me complaining enough they agreed to pay for the shipping for them to get repaired. I ended up getting back a brand new pair of them instead, which made me very happy..at first. I've only had them for about a week now and now the power LED on the volume knob is flickering which could be one of two things. 1. It's just a dodgey LED, which is okay because it's just a light..or it could be a power issue. WHY do cheap crappy sounding 20 dollars speakers prove to be more reliable than these things? Well, that settles it. I'm not using this garbage again.
