I bought these to replace my old passive monitors which were horribly damaged in my last move. I was very excited to step into the future and start using "Active" monitors. These guys are great. I like 'em alot. The studio I normally work in has Tannoy PBM 5 II's and KRK K-Rok's. I would say that the BX5a's sound more like the K-Rok's without all the low end. on that note... I would say that if there is a problem with these monitors, it is that they are lacking in low frequency response and are somewhat scooped in the 1.5khz range(Of course, this is in my home studio. You might find that they are completely flat in your environment.) I just put an EQ in front of them and the problem was solved. I don't think this is a big deal. You'll be hard presssed to find near field monitors that don't need some kind of EQ to work in your room. For features, I gave these a 4.5 because I think it would be cool for them to have some kind of simple built in EQ. Maybe a switch which has two different curves and a bypass setting or something like that. Otherwise, I have nothing but good things to say about the included features. I mean... They're Bi-Amped, they work, and sound comes out of them. What other features does one really need in a pair of Monitors. For value, I'm saying 4.5 because as always... To buy these you're spending money that you could put towards buying something totally top notch. That being said... I really think these speakers will serve you well. With a little TLC and time setting up an EQ for them, they really sound quite good. Mine sure do.

Let me begin by saying please do not expect to hear the 100% correct sound with no noise from these speakers! Yes they are good for the most part as far as money and a little bit of sound quality. The Tweeter makes crisp high sounds.I've had these speakers for several months in a home studio and for some reason I would get a headache after more than 2 3 hours of listening to them. So I decided to find out if there is any sound coloration or changes the speaker is making. After a few side-by-side comparison with other better speakers in a shop I realized that Bx5a has a certain way of outputing the sound. It would play very little low frequencies. So you practically hear very little bass from these monitors. Another thing I realized is it sounds like the mids are being cut. So you what you would hear is strong high frequencies and a little bit of mid's but barely any lows.I would recommend you to personally go to music shop in your area and check these out for yourself. I returned them and currently have HS50M's by Yamaha which im very happy with.

NICE

By Benny

from NYC

The bass isn't really thumpin' but these are studio monitors, and ideally should be coupled with a subwoofer if you need serious bass response(such as m-audio's bx-10 subwoofer). They are actually capable of pushing some bass, and depending on your room you may get more bass depending on your positioning. You really can get more bass out of these speakers with an outboard equalizer or plug-in for your computer, but the speakers have NO bass/treble adjustments (unlike more expensive monitors). You can adjust volume, that's it. If you are looking for super butt-kicking bass, look elsewhere, or get a subwoofer with these. The sound and clarity is really GREAT. I'm using them as nearfield monitors and they're awesome. I'm an audio engineer/musician. I plan on rigging up a subwoofer out of a cheap logitech 2.1 speaker set with a switch to turn off the satellite speakers. That way I can get the bass when necessary, which for me will be rare anyway.

M-AUDIO BX5a BEST BANG FOR YOUR BUCK!

By LPP

So I picked up a pair of these monitors for my home mixing station about 6 months ago, And I haven't looked back since. Dont let the price scare you away & make you think that the quality is not there cause their an awesome pair of Monitors. At our Home Studio we run KRK and to be honest in my personal preference I perfer the BX5a's compared to the over priced KRK's.

Great bang for the buck. After setting this up, it took me a couple of hours to get used to the sound. These can go very loud and the clarity is pretty good. You would never want to go back to traditional desktop speakers. The only down side is these lack the bass needed for most music. I would recommend getting a sub woofer along with it

Best Speakers For the Money!!!

By Anonymous

from Undisclosed

I bought these speakers to replace a set of event 5" studio monitors which I thought were pretty good. Well I had no idea how bad they were until I got these speakers hooked up. The sound quality of these little giants is awesome. They are very tight and very close to the much more expensive professional nearfield monitors. In a small demo studio with a room with the dimensions approximatly 8' by 12' they fill the room very well. The lows are not exaggerated which is exactly what you want if you want to mix good radio mixes as well as CD mixes. The mids are pumped just a little so that you can hear all of the instruments that are fighting for that bandwidth. The highs are nice and crisp but not over pronounced as not to give you that digital ear after hours of mixing on these speakers. The stereo separation is very good with a very wide sweet spot at least in my room. The only music that I would not recommend to be mixed on these fine speakers would be Hip Hop and any other heavey Bass filled music like it.I mainly mix Country, Jazz, Swing, Big Band, pop and Rock and for those genres they fit the bill perfectly.

This one is a winner! Some riffs from Slayer that so far I had only listened as plain noise, I could hear it perfectly with these speakers.Of course they aren't the top of the line, but for the price you can't go wrong.I spent about 4k in my budget home studio, and the only thing I'm not planning to upgrade. They sound crystal clear, even if the sound is coming through a Sound Blaster and going through a Behringer Mixer. It made a huge difference in my mixes.Heck, I like this ones even more than the NS10 and Mackie 824.

100% Better then the Mackie MR5

By MixMaster-mLFD5

from Pa.

See all my reviews

I set off to buy a set of Mackie MR5's. I listened to the Mackie, KRK, M-Audio. I decided to buy the Mackie MR5. I was totally disappointed! Too much low end & not enough high. I returned them & listened to the KRK & M-Audio. The KRK sounded alittle worst then the Mackie but the M-Audio BX5a just blew me away! I tried different keyboards & listened to music making sure everything was set flat & all the sound was flat, not colorful, tight, crisp, & the highs blended flawlessly with the mids along with the bass & vise versa! I got them home & I'm not disappointed at all! I hooked a 6" ported sub I had up with these & all I can say is holy flatness! Get them you won't be sorry!

The only problem i have with these monitors is they have little response on the low end... your mixes will end up with a lot of bass unless you get some kind of sub. Great for recording vocals and guitar

These monitors are amazing. Don't let their small size not consider them. The 5" woofer puts out a ton of power. They are really accurate too. Overall a great set of monitors for an amazing price.

Nice Sound

By DN

from Radford, Virginia USA

These are definitely the best speakers I've owned thus far, even compared to my higher-end consumer systems with a subwoofer. These have a way better stereo image and give you a better idea of what?s going on. On my previous systems with a subwoofer, the sound was not only comparably murkier-sounding, but the stereo field was not as pronounced.I only have a couple of complaints. The higher-end frequencies can be really sharp on the ears, very crisp. I guess that's a good thing, as they are very clear, but if the volume is up, it can definitely be quite ear-piercing.Also, the lower end of the frequency response is listed as stopping at around 56 Hz. It would be nice if it extended below that some, to about 38 Hz.Given the price though, these are an excellent upgrade to your studio, if you?re currently using anything other than studio monitors to do your editing, mixing and mastering on. They definitely give you a better idea of what?s going on in the mix, which is the whole point of studio monitors. All in all, I?m happy with these monitors. Although I?ll probably upgrade to an even better set in a few years, these have definitely improved my studio for now!

Great for home recording!

By rb91458

from N/E

These speakers are incredible for this price. I paid a $100.00 bucks more and they were still worth it. If you have home recording equipment don't look any further. Excellent highs and mid range. The low end was much better than I expected. The Low's are very nice.

By Anonymous

These monitors are the bomb! But adding a sub-woofer would make it the best ever!!!The factory should offer a package including it. Also make it only one side active and the other passive. It probably will cheap the product but will be the ideal package.

On Point

By 6xLSHTjje

I purchased these monitors and I was very impressed with the sound, clarity, and power. If you closed your eyes you would think you are in front of some big boy speakers. You can easily get a good mix out of these monitors and mastering should be a breeze. I like them and if you are short on your funds for equipment, this will be the start of your studio. You can't go wrong with these power houses.
