Acoustic Space settings include -4dB, -2dB, and Flat—and the monitor also features LF Cutoff, MF Boost, and HF Trim switches for additional customization. Optimized Frequency Response
The finely tuned integration of acoustic and electronic design elements in the CX8 monitor delivers cohesive sound—from solid bass, to well-defined mids, to smooth, transparent highs. Featuring a high-grade damping surround, the premium, Kevlar, low-frequency driver maximizes excursion to provide a clear, articulate low end with a bass impact you'd expect from a larger enclosure. The silk-dome, high-frequency driver with oversized 1.25" voice coil delivers an exceptional high-frequency response up to 30kHz.
The M-Audio CX8 components are designed to work together so that the entire system has superior headroom, resulting in lower high-frequency distortion and reduced listener fatigue compared to other monitors in its class. The bi-amplified design dedicates 80 watts for the lows and 40 watts for the highs. The low-frequency driver's venting and large voice coil provides both thermal and acoustic headroom. The high-frequency driver features an optimized, sealed rear chamber for more audible headroom (as well as lower frequency extension for greater mid-range clarity) than similarly priced products. Ok, I only have working experience with the CX5's BX8's and the CX8's, however I've run live sound, been in other people's studios, and have been recording for quite a while hobby/semi-pro mostly demos and assisting people with songwriting. So I'm no pro but I've got some real experience. I'm sure I'd love some $2,000 Genelecs or whatever but for under 400 for the pair these are fantastic. I noticed that the CX5's had a strange mid-accentuated sound that needed to be EQ'd out. However I never could. There's just some wiered upper mid tone, like speaking into a can or cupped hands. It was so bad we put a 32 band eq on them. Fear not, we took it off. These have a much more balanced sound. I do notice that there is something going on between 1-2k that is similar to the 5's but maybe they're just clear in that range and I don't like my mix. The eq adjustments found on the back are very handy to have but not really necessary for my use. The only tweak I found that really made a difference for me was the bass roll-off. Really helps if your room is too small or your desk is too close to a wall. The others only seem to boost an already powerful eq range. The mid boost is an upper-mid boost and is actually quite helpful for listening to vocals and horns and such. I like using the boost when analyzing instrumental tracks, but the vocals jump out way too much. Perhaps that would help at times when mixing. Horns and cymbles really pop with the mid boost set to "in". I've found I prefer all of the adjustments set to flat. There's one big thing to keep in mind on the negative side. These things are huge. I mean huge! Annoyingly huge. I don't have speakers to impress the neighbors, I have them to listen to my mix. So that is certainly a drawback. Did I mention they're huge? It's like using a pa speaker for your mix. You can definitely use these without a sub but I wish at times that I had one, but usually when listening to music for pleasure, not work mixing. Ideally, you'd want the bass frequency switch set to -2 db and link a sub. There's a 200-500k sound that just warbles out of these speakers on some mixes. Cut the bass... problem solved but bottom end dissapears. Again, maybe my room. For 560$ each these may be worth it or may not. For 179 you absolutely can not get anything better. And I looked for a very long time before these bad boys dropped in price. Cleare out more space on your desk and enjoy!
For the price these monitors will rock your mixes (in a properly treated room). I upgraded from some BX5as and I can actually hear the lows now. It's opened up a whole new world of mixing for me.
Although I haven't used them yet there are a lot of tweaks you can mess with on the back of the monitors to get them sounding the best in your room.
M-Audio isn't Adam but these monitors rock compared to anything else I've ever owned. I've never been disappointed with M-Audio gear and these monitors are no exception.
I got these on a deal and would buy a second pair if I needed them at full price. They are worth every penny.
The CX8s are a revelation. They are so much better than my previous Fostex PS-3s. Still they are not perfect.I don't think these monitors are perfectly accurate, I've used one of the switchws on the back to cut the treble, andI think I'll be playing with the other switches in the future.Still, stereo separation and definition are so much better than my previous monitors. Really beautiful sound.
I'm a semi-pro musician and record at my home. I love these speakers and I'm very pleased. I was a bit skeptical at first and wasn't sure. But once I got them in the studio and cranked them up... Man, I was hooked!
