OVERVIEW

A 1200W 15" powered subwoofer made to work seamlessly with Mackie's HD Series systems.

The Mackie HD1501 15 Powered Subwoofer is an ideal compact sub for your HD Series system, creating a lightweight and portable PA solution that sounds great. The HD1501 is capable of producing 1200W of power and it does so in an extremely compact design that's easy to move from gig to gig. Class-D Fast Recovery amplification makes the HD1501 subwoofer ultra-efficient, effortlessly delivering massive power to the 15 driver that's custom-designed to handle the job. Expertly tweaked tuning filters, internal crossovers, and protection circuitry are designed by EAW for the ultimate in professional performance. Give your Mackie HD, SRMv2, or any other full-range system a much needed hot bass injection with the Mackie HD1501 Powered Subwoofer.

Portable, Professional PA Speaker
Just pair up the HD1501 Powered Subwoofer with any HD Series full-range loudspeaker for an extremely portable PA that delivers unmatched clarity and eliminates the need for tons of expensive and heavy outboard gear. The precision-tuned HD1501 is a perfect match for the top boxes, with a high-pass output specifically designed to alleviate the power-hungry low frequencies from getting to your top boxes, allowing them to do what they do best. The entire system features protective circuitry, including peak and RMS limiting, over-excursion, and thermal protection to keep those lows pumping at all costs. This subwoofer's also a great match for your SRM450v2.

Power and Agility
The HD1501 subwoofer speaker delivers 1200 watts of peak power using Mackie's Class-D Fast Recovery amplification. Class-D amps allow for extremely high-output in a design that is much lighter than traditional amplifiers. Normally, a sub that can push that kind of power is no fun to lug around. Okay, we can't promise a fun load in, but we can say that your subwoofers are now probably lighter than your bassist's rig. It's also really compact, which means you should even be able to carry it all by yourself. Plus, Mackie's Fast Recovery design allows the amplifier to recover more quickly when pushed into clipping. This means less distortion when things get too loud.

Tweaked and Tuned
Mackie has once again called on the sonic geniuses over at EAW to make the HD1501 one the most punchy, chest-pounding subwoofers in its class. The ported, direct-radiating design means super-low frequency extension that is smooth and powerful. EAW also custom specified the 15 driver to work in perfect harmony with the amplifier. The woofer is designed to soak up each and every bit of power the amp puts out. Precision phase control and tuning filters make the HD1501 the perfect companion to the HD1521 or SRM450v2, especially when using the high-pass outputs. A finely tuned, phase aligned and undeniably professional PA system is just a couple of patches away.

Ready for Anything
The HD1501 speaker embodies Mackie's "Built-Like-A-Tank" philosophy and is certifiably roadworthy. First off, the enclosure is built using 15mm birch. Wood is not only more durable than plastic, but delivers a more natural sound. The HD1501 also features durable textured black paint that minimizes the risk of scratching. The grill is equally robust, made using powder coated steel and flush with the enclosure to avoid denting. If you use the Mackie subwoofer speaker in an install situation, you can flip off the trademark "Mackie Blue" LED on the front if you want the Mackie HD1501 to blend seamlessly into the background. Throw in the fact that is one of the most compact subwoofers available and you've got an ultra-professional bass bin that can be tossed in the back of even sub-compact vehicles.

Buyer Beware!

Comments about Mackie HD1501 Powered Subwoofer:

An update to my previous review here. This unit failed on the third gig. It powers on, but no audio, whatsoever. Just thought I'd share this tidbit. If you read the many posts on blogs and other reviews regarding Mackie reliability, you will know quickly what this means.

Pretty Good

Comments about Mackie HD1501 Powered Subwoofer:

I bought this unit to replace a 2x15" cabinet powered by a 350-Watt bass amp head, expecting to see an improvement by way of SPL or Low-End response. I wanted something that was all contained in a single unit with a built-in amp, and one that would fit in a smaller space. I can say it does the job well, but I have one major gripe, which can be really discounted if you take into account that it is a single 15" sub in a small cabinet, and that likely EAW nor Mackie could really improve it beyond this with today's technology: The Low-end. It has punch, it has some fire, but when you go lower than about 50Hz, it rolls off really fast, unless you listen at lower than useful volumes. Some background: I play bass in a band and use Roland foot pedals to play sub-low notes through this sub. I'm also a Professional Mastering Engineer. This unit competes with the above 350-watt powered 2x15" combo (with the most powerful Peavey 15" drivers I could find (2400Watt power handling each)), and I do know that 350-watts pushing two of these is a bad ratio of under-powering woofers, but the extra wattage of the 1200-watt Class D amp on the HD-1501 doesn't really do much for it because of an over-excursion limiter, or lack of 15" surface area. It only helps to better control of the driver by a better balance of power and power-handling. Mackie built in a filter that keeps the woofer from damage due to over-excursion. The problem is, when adjusting volume from a mixer, for example, you don't see when you are hitting it (LED is on the rear of the HD1501). Also, the limiter is hit quickly at low volumes for low bass notes. This tells me that the amp is either too powerful for an inefficient driver (lack of surface area), the driver can't handle the power (too floppy of a suspension) and Mackie had to over-compensate by limiting earlier on, or the limiter is simply too sensitive (overkill due to warranty reasons). It really is a threshold between what Mackie says is a safe operating level for the driver, and what you want to hear as a listener. I personally, wasn't too impressed for the money, but I'll keep it for now.Bottom Line:Although I believe this unit will suffice for very small gigs, the expense vs. benefit just wasn't a good ratio for me. I realize I won't be getting rid of my former setup, but instead buy a bigger amp for the 2x15 box and just deal with the extra weight on larger gigs (i.e. ANY rooms requiring some form of stage, large or small). Another minor gripe is that I did not receive an owner's manual with my new unit. I'm not sure if this was an error, or Mackie's crude way of letting you know that you need to go to Mackie.com to download a PDF version. Don't let this review discourage you from buying this unit by any means. It serves it's purpose, but don't expect to be completely blown away.
